Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand
GET UPDATES FROM Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand

New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is a smart, hardworking passionate public servant, who is focused on the difficult economic challenges that are facing New York and the country. Since joining the U.S. Senate, Kirsten has helped expand health insurance for millions of uninsured children, stood with President Obama to ensure America’s economic recovery, and secured billions of dollars to create jobs in New York and make sure New York taxpayers get their fair share.

Kirsten was appointed to the U.S. Senate in January 2009, after representing New York's 20th Congressional District in the House of Representatives during the 110th Congress. Kirsten was first elected to Congress in 2006, soundly defeating long-time incumbent Republican John Sweeney. Gillibrand was the first woman ever elected to represent New York's 20th Congressional District, and the first Democrat to win the Upstate seat in nearly 30 years.

Kirsten was born and raised in Upstate New York, and currently lives with her husband, Jonathan and their two sons, Theodore, age five, and Henry, who is an infant in Greenport, Columbia County.
Kristen’s passion for public service began at a very early age. Growing up in Albany, she saw her grandmother organize many of the women in her community to make a difference and improve people’s lives.

Before serving in Congress, Kirsten served in the Clinton Administration as Special Counsel to the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Andrew Cuomo. During her time in the Clinton administration she worked to strengthen labor laws and life in low income neighborhoods

A magna cum laude graduate from Dartmouth College, Kirsten received her law degree at the University of California at Los Angeles Law School, and aserved as a law clerk on the Second Circuit Court of Appeals. As an attorney for 15 years, Kirsten worked on a wide range of legal and policy-related issues, often using her legal skills to help provide free legal representation to people who could not otherwise afford it.
Kirsten believes that New Yorkers deserve leaders who are honest, open and upfront with the public. That’s why she supports President Obama’s plans to reform the federal government and increase transparency and will continue to lead by example. Since her days in the House, Kirsten was the first Member of Congress ever to post her schedule online. Her “Sunshine Report, available on her web site, enables all New Yorkers to see who she is meeting with and what she is doing.

Since joining the Senate, Kirsten has been traveling to every corner of New York, from Buffalo to Brooklyn, listening to community and business leaders and everyday New Yorker discuss the challenges they face. The number one concern on the minds of New Yorkers is the economy. That's why Kirsten’s top priority is creating good-paying jobs in New York and making smart investment to ensure our economy is thriving for the long term.

To strengthen our economy for the long term and to combat global climate change, Kirsten is committed to developing sustainable, renewable energy, reducing carbon emissions, relieving our dependence on foreign oil, and create good-paying New York jobs.

Kirsten understands that the health of our economy and the health of our families depends on making quality health care affordable and accessible to every man, woman and child. She is working with President Obama on comprehensive health care reform to fix our broken system.

For Kirsten, the most important investment we can make is in our children's education. From pre-kindergarten programs to higher education and continued job training for our workers, Kirsten believes that investing in education ensures a stronger economic future for all of us.

As I've traveled throughout New York, one of the concerns I hear most from my constituents is a deep frustration with those in Congress. They feel that Washington is broken and unable to do the job we were elected to do. If voters sent one message on Election Day, it...

This week saw a historic election for women, both on the ballot and at the ballot box. Women knew what was at stake and showed up at the polls in 2008-level numbers, making up 53 percent of the electorate. Not only were women decisive in reelecting President Obama to...

Over the past two years, I've traveled throughout New York meeting with farmers and anti-hunger advocates to develop our priorities for the 2012 Farm Bill. Based on these conversations, I fought for and won several provisions in the bill such as improved crop insurance for fruit and vegetable farmers, rural...

As we all know, there is no harder, or more rewarding job, than being a Mom. But for so many mothers who work outside of the home, it's made even harder by the lack of equal pay for women in our country.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau,...

Equal Pay Is About Economic Security For Middle Class Families

I was disheartened to hear Governor Scott Walker of Wisconsin recently signed a law that repealed Wisconsin's Fair Pay Act. This commonsense piece of legislation, like the Lilly Ledbetter Act signed into law by President Obama in 2009, was designed to make it easier for victims...

In recent weeks, I've said repeatedly that I was dumb-founded that in 2012 we are actually debating whether women should have access to contraception.
