Senator Graham's Inappropriate "Kamikaze" Remarks on Pelosi's Health Care Efforts

What's Your Reaction:

This week, Senator Lindsey Graham made comments about Speaker Pelosi's efforts to galvanize support for health care reform, stating that she has Democratic Members "liquored up on sake" to make a "suicide run" to pass reform. Later he added, "I don't know whether it's sake or moonshine but no sober person would do this."

For the Senator to add "moonshiners" to an already unsavory sake and suicide statement, does a disservice to the underlying issue. Citing that "no sober person would do [healthcare reform]", because Americans "do not need to lose their choice in health care", I question who has, in fact - to use the Senator's words - "lost their political mind". This "lose of choice" is exactly what this bill prevents by putting the healthcare industry in its place and by returning control to the American people. If the Senator has problems with us capping premiums or covering preexisting conditions, then I suggest he come clean on his addiction to the habits of the healthcare industry.

As a Japanese American who was interned along with my family during World War II, I am personally disheartened that Senator Graham chose to use racially tinged rhetoric to express his opposition to health care reform. There is a way to engage in healthy debate without ostracizing the 16.2 million AAPIs in this country, who are an important part of this democracy and health care reform. Many face barriers to quality health care, such as the high cost of health care, racial and ethnic health disparities, cultural isolation, and language barriers, to name a few.

We must pass health care legislation now, and we must show respect for our fellow Americans as we do so. This bill is an important starting point for efforts to improve quality of health care, increase access to health care for more Americans, lower costs for working families, and protect small businesses. I am also proud that it includes provisions that begin to address the racial and ethnic disparities that so many vulnerable communities face.

This is no drunken "kamikaze" mission, but a thoughtful and essential one that will serve all working families in this country, and return control from the health insurance companies to the American people.

I join Speaker Pelosi and call upon my colleagues in the U.S. Congress to send this critical health care legislation to President Obama's desk this week.

Rep Mike Honda is Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus.

If I were to say that the Democrats' health care vore was no difffernet that Thgelma and Louise driving their car off of the cliff how would that be different than Senator Grahams comments? Because they were white? How am I to take it that the President just said that on national news? I am white. Should I cry racism? Face it...the Japanese were kamikazees. Thelma and Louise drove their car off a cliff. No matter who did it the result was similar. The driver died a fiery death. The Dems who vote for this health care bill will be doing the same to their careers.

How is it that we have people like Lindsay Graham in respected positions of power in this country? That he, and people like him, can be elected speaks poorly of this country. They can only be elected because there are millions of yahoos who lack any respect or concern for others and who are, in fact, too dumb to recognize even what's in their own best interests. They deserve what they get, I guess--but they make it hard for anyone else from getting anything better too.

unfortunatly Sen Graham is following in the footsteps of his mentor and predecessor Sen Strom Thurmond. He is becomming a Southern Obstructionist. Remember that Sen Thurmond holds the record for longest fillubuster (24- hours). Now Sen Graham is threatening to hold the entire country from progress on Immigration Reform, by declaring that the bill he Co-sponsored last week will be dead if HCR passes. This is not the will of the Americian people but the will of obstructionism, and so South Carolina gets another polotical black-eye.

I'd like to see if Graham can give an old-fashioned all night talkathon. This "Soft Filibuster" is ridiculous coming from the party that whined that the Democrats were obstructing a few partisan hacks and ideological extremists that Bush nominated to the Federal judiciary. It's easier to repeal a bad law than to impach a bad judge.

Exactly how many elected republicans have given up their socialized medicine? Just curious.

About the same number of teabaggers who have given up their social security and medicare benefits.

Teabaggers? How is that different than Senator Graham's comments?

It wouldn't have been nearly as exciting without all the HuffPo articles and blogs from experts claiming the bill to be dead over and over again. Not to mention the humor of the trolls.

I can't stand Graham or his establishment position on health care but the idea of him saying kamikaze was racially tinged is a cheap shot. He wasn't being racist, I'm sure that was the last thing on his mind.

There's plenty to attack Graham on, but playing the race card over this is nothing but a cheap shot.

Perhaps people should choose their words a little more carefully and then no one can accuse them of racism.
12:34 PM on 03/20/2010
Sorry, the man speaks like a racist and supports racist policies and laws. If that's not a racist bigot, I don't know what is.
12:56 PM on 03/20/2010
You are equating racism with requring someone to actually EARN something. Why is that? Is it racism to actually require someone to actually have to pay to go to college or actually have to pay for healthcare? Why would you make that equation? Are only African Americans poor?

Here's my choice:
Health Care by the Mercy of Wall Street, about as merciful as cannibals.
or no health care at all!
10:57 PM on 03/19/2010
Yeah, those doctors who will be "forced out of health care" are going to do what? Your claims are phony, and if even if you could provide a link, or a poll, or a paper of some kind, who cares?
I don't. Did those doctors care when the manuacturing wages dropped because of the drive to right size and the workers stil lost their jobs? No they didn't.. So let those who believe they are the victims go find another job and there will be one hundred applicants applying for the openings. Unfortunatley most of them will be from India and other countries where education is prized and students actually learn.
Go America and all new Americans.

Be careful about offering your money. Graham and his constituents don't see any misery but their own as worth crying about. You'll go bankrupt with an offer like that to them.

..."no sober person would do this." But the AMA and AARP just endorsed the bill, does senator graham think they are all drunk too? it would be nice if republicans could have a serious discussion of the issues, instead of constant hysterics.
08:26 PM on 03/19/2010
I am here...

The New England Journal of Medicine survey of doctors had around 60% indicating this legislation would either force them out of the medical field or have them retire within the next four years.

The AMA does not speak for all doctor's. AARP will make millions of dollars 'selling' the government insurance.

Your turn.

i couldn't find that survey you quoted, could you please post a link? at any rate it sounds like its more opinion that fact. how do those doctors really know what it's going to do to their practices? and who were these doctors...just the ones that get their news from FOX or from other sources, as well? that would make a big difference as to the responses.

AND, btw, you seem to be criticizing AARP for "making millions of dollars" selling insurance but you have no problem with wellpoint et al doing that now? what exactly is your point in making that part of the statement?
04:44 PM on 03/19/2010
It is unbelievable that "the american people" do not want a health care reform bill that will change the status quo. In God's name the american people are not that stupid, their is a majority that is not represented by polls, that only speak at the ballot box, that is hurting and have no representation that majority is poor by american standards and I encourage this majority to take time off from their lives to decry the lies of the few who want to continue to control the majority. This is not democracy, stand up america and I am sure I am refering to at least 200 million people, do what is right for your country not what the politicians want you to do, believe only the truth will set us free. Please help us from becoming a third world economic disaster, because the country who see their peoples health as a means of enrichment for a few should not be our political leaders. Stand up fight ,fight back, fight always God is on our side.

Lindsey Graham boss should release him from his job just like any other employees would be if he or ghe called someone names.
. Bill O'rielly, Dennis Miller, and now Lindsey Graham calling Nancy Pelosi names and making jokes about her.
These guys should remember it was a female that gave them life, and maybe they are married to a female before they start talking about females.
Lets start blogging about their wife or mother and see what kind of response you get from O'rielly,Miller, and Graham.
Don't like the Bill, vote no. SIMPLE, NO REASON TO CALL NAMES.
12:41 PM on 03/19/2010
I am sorry, but this is silly. Regardless of opinions on healthcare, Graham was not looking to be offensive, nor do I think he really was. He was using the word Kamikaze to describe a mission of Democratic congressmen basically sacrificing themselves (or careers) for a cause they truly believe in. He probably could have left out the "sake" part for sure. But it gets extremely nauseating listening to or reading fake hurt feelings or oversensitivity for purely political reasons. I would bet good money that had a Democratic congressman made the same comment about Republicans using unsavory parliamentary tactics to pass a bill that is unpopular in every poll, you would make a little room in your thought process to allow for an over-used historical analogy.

Wow another mind reader. What past comments have you read from this individual leads you to believe he would accept comments like this from anyone?

One thing I hate about a repub is they make statements based on absolutely zero facts and past it off as the truth. Only the mindless fox viewers accept what you say without looking up the facts for themselves.
