What a Real Government Takeover Looks Like

What's Your Reaction:

As Congress convenes today to pass long-awaited health insurance reform, I'm reminded of one of the last times we voted on a Sunday: March 20, 2005, when Republicans forced an extraordinary vote to intervene in the case of Terri Schiavo.

To know what a real government takeover looks like, one should revisit that resolution. That midnight vote was a grotesque legislative travesty. For 215 years it had been a solid principle of this country that Congress not get involved in life-and-death issues like the tragic case of Ms. Schiavo. Yet, on that Sunday -- Palm Sunday -- Congress broke with tradition and inserted its own judgment. On that Sunday, the Republican Congress sent the message that it knew better than families, doctors, and hospital chaplains.

To my friends on the other side of the aisle who repeatedly claim that Congress is passing a "government takeover" -- I kindly remind them that's their work, not ours. Our work expands private insurance while increasing choice and competition and protecting consumers from the worst abuses of the insurance industry and leaving medical decisions in the hands of doctors and their patients. We intend that patients, families, and doctors -- not the government, not insurance companies -- have control over health decisions.

I liked how the "defense of marriage" people tried to override the husband's wishes on the matter. Guess the marital bond is sacred only when it's convenient.

Hearing Repubs claim that they want to keep government out of our lives always gives me a hearty chuckle

Beware conservatives who say they are against big government. They just want a different kind of big government.

Truly! What about the Patriot Act and the fact that they voted to have the right to find out what kind of books you read, or eavesdrop on your telephone conversations!!!! Well, one thing you can certainly say for them is that they've got nerve.

Another recipient of pharmaceutical and health care industry money likes the health care bill. Thanks for your efforts to subsidize your contributors.

Congress did not care to hear that people wanted health-care, greater access, health-care that did not turn them away or bankrupt the family. Congress responds by telling the citizenry they need and want better access to health-care insurance.

Now Congress has accomplished the heroic feat of re-inflating the financial bubble; Mandating premium payments for everyone that the IRS will monitor in a "rigged to collapse" economy.

Congress has not done a substantive thing in regard to our collapsing economy; the chronic unemployment, hunger, homelessness, foreclosures, bankruptcies, loss of healthcare and education, etc.; There is the Perpetual War Policy and the trillion dollar bailouts used by banks to speculate in the collapsing operation international monetary financier market system.

This healthcare "victory" is a fraud upon the population. The President, the Administration and the Congress have the political power to do almost anything; and yet you will only serve the doges of finance.

Why are so many Dems hesitant to bring this up? The Repubs showed themselves to be disgusting and revolting. Where were the Tea Party demonstrations against this? Oh yeah, we had a white president then, nevermind.

The TEa Party demonstrations at the time were actually in FAVOR of government intervention into this very private family matter. Sure it wasn't called Tea Party at the time, but it was the same people.

The biggest lie ever told was that neocons are in any way for smaller government, unless its smaller Democratic government, otherwise the sky is the limit. Neocons are all about Machiavellian values of fear and oppression, and in order to be effective at that endeavor, they need the largest of Big Governments. Ask any neocon about the evils of Big Government when their party is in power, and you will hear compliments over the GOP growing government far bigger than Democrats ever dreamed. You will hear, "Defecits are good", "Torture is good", "Rights are overrated","Pork helps out economy","subsidies to the most profitable companies are good".

Neocons compassionate conservatism only comes into play either before life has begun, or on the deathbed after life is already over, but in between, your on your own in a dog eat dog world. Only a FOX News believing neocon could equate compassion with denying millions of their fellow Americans healthcare, killing tens of thousands of their fellow citizens annually, yet stop the universe to try to prolong the misery of Terry Shaivo. Neocons never miss an opportunity to increase the suffering of their fellow man and for that they are quite proud.

Neocons want a HUGE governement meant to pacify and control the population, and a tiny, miniscule, nonexistant government that serves the need for social programs, infrastructure, medical and educational matters for the average tax payer. In a Neocon world, your taxes are taken at gunpoint and thrown into fueling the police state. EVERYTHING else you need for life must come out of your pocket.

No public parks (with free admission).

No national monuments (with free admission).

No public schools and no requirement to be educated (if you can't afford a private school you won't be educated beyond "want fries with that" at home).

No age restriction for labor (child labor is the norm).

No restrictions for work week hours or employee rights of any kind.

No food aid for the poor.

No unemployment aid.

No help for college.

No road or bridge repair/construction (all private owned).

No free marina or dock access (all private owned again).

In short, they want a fascist police state and anything less will result in their doubling down in lies and traitorous actions to get what they want. We're seeing it now in the Republican party.

Fanned! Conservatives always cry and complain about a liberal "nanny state" and in some instances I would agree with them. What neocons want is even worse though. They would prefer an over intrusive big brother state that can listen in on your private phone calls, retrieve your emails and texts, and would love nothing more than to dictate who can and cannot get married, what substances a person can put into their own body even if it doesn't affect anyone else. The only social or "entitlement" programs they believe in are welfare for the rich in the form of Wall Street bailouts and massive tax cuts to the richest one percent. And corporate welfare in the form of government contracts to privately owned mercenary companies to keep the war for profit machine rolling. In short neocons are all about comforting the comfortable an afflicting the afflicted.

Someone asked for a better solution than being forced to purchase health insurance. I'll give you a better solution. You use tax revenues to build a hospital, pay the salaries and buy the eqipment. Just like a public school. You open the doors and let anyone in. If you don't want to use the facilities, you don't. Just like the former Charity Hospital in New Orleans, or the very functional health care system in Costa Rica. The option is to pay for a private clinic. Soooo simple...soooo not going to happen in the united states of corporate control.

Thats because for repubs (and "conservatives" in general (as opposed to "libertarians")), "freedom" only means the "freedom" to extort, fight, and oppress. Liberals, on the other hand, believe in the "freedom" to love, to choose, to live.

Thank you Representative Holt for bringing this point up. One that I have brought up many times before in conversations and other forums. I happen to remember that very clearly. I also remember how the Republicans acted like bullies in the school yard keeping the votes open until they got enough votes to pass what they wanted. They twisted arms and even went as far as cutting the power off as Democrats met. The Republicans had an opportortunity to make this a legitimate debate, but instead they choose to cloud it with fear and smear tactics.

Geesh, I'd half-forgotten about the Terri Schiavo government intervention, which was appalling. Talk about over-stepping boundaries!

The Rethugs are such blatant hypocrites! They don't want "government intervention" unless it's for conservative principles.

Thank you for the reminder.
