Congressman Tom Lantos (D-San Mateo/San Francisco) is the ranking Democrat on the House International Relations Committee. He is serving his 13th term in the House, where in addition to foreign policy he has become known as a leader on human rights, environmental protection, education and federal fiscal responsibility. The only Holocaust survivor ever elected to Congress, Lantos left his native Hungary for the United States in 1947. He holds a PhD in economics from the University of California, Berkeley and was a university professor, international affairs analyst and business consultant before his election to Congress in 1980.
