Five Years After "Mission Accomplished"

Posted: 5/2/08

Five years ago, President Bush dressed up in a flight suit for a self-congratulatory photo op on the deck of the USS Abraham Lincoln under a banner that proclaimed "Mission Accomplished". Certainly, the war was not over then and victory was not achieved. The mission has been redefined several times and what the president hopes to accomplish in Iraq is unclear.

Five years after "Mission Accomplished", the costs to human life continue to build. Since then, nearly four thousand brave American servicemen and women have been killed in Iraq, hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have died, and over 5 million Iraqi refugees and internally displaced persons have been forced from their homes.

Five years after "Mission Accomplished", the strain on our economy is becoming unbearable. Congress has appropriated over $500 billion, and we are spending an average of $245 million a day in Iraq. Joseph Stiglitz, a Nobel laureate economist, has estimated the total costs to our economy, including caring for our veterans and rebuilding our military, will top $3 trillion dollars. The cost of the Iraq war to the average American family this year will be $16,000.

Five years after "Mission Accomplished", the fact remains that there is no military solution to the problems in Iraq. Instead of working to find political solutions that will calm the warring sects, our continued military presence has further entrenched the divisions on all sides of the conflict and may be creating the conditions for a further discord. In many cities, the president's solution is to literally erect concrete walls between neighboring communities. The administration is now threatening to compound its mistakes throughout the Middle East by employing the same saber-rattling scare tactics against Iran as those that led us into the Iraq war.

Those who oppose President Bush's policies must offer suggestions for a successful path forward, and we believe we can present a better vision for the foreign policy challenges our nation faces. As leaders of the Congressional Out of Iraq Caucus, we have worked hard to educate Members of Congress about the failures and mismanagement of the Iraqi occupation. We have challenged the president on his claim that there is a credible government in Iraq; we have raised questions about the promised Iraqi oil revenue paying for the rebuilding of Iraq; we have called for investigations of contractors who are allegedly ripping off the American taxpayers; and we have crafted legislation to address these problems and more. Most importantly, we have introduced legislation that would require that war funding only be spent to safely redeploy our troops from Iraq.

The Out of Iraq Caucus remains committed to ending this unconscionable, misguided, and costly war in Iraq. We will not give up until our troops are safely returned to their children and their families. Five years after "Mission Accomplished", the president is requesting more than $100 billion to continue this war in Iraq through 2008. We call on our colleagues in Congress to resist the president's request. It is time to end the war in Iraq.

maxine Walters candidate Ms Clinton voted for the war such a phony.

The Mission, to remove Hussein and affect regime change--a policy begun under Pres. Clinton--was Accomplished.

A simple 'thank you' for completing that which Democrats couldn't do will suffice.
03:33 AM on 05/03/2008
When the Democratic Party fractures this fall and loses the election hopefully these visionless defeatest cowards and all their leftie buddies will leave the party and go join the Green Party. Then maybe the Democratic Party can once again regain it's pride and former glory.
03:48 AM on 05/03/2008
Perhaps this Fall when the Republicans are reduced to the irrelevant minority which they have become, delusional thinking will once again be recognized by the public and even a few right wing not jobs.
03:03 AM on 05/04/2008
When my prediction comes ture and Senator McCain becomes President McCain will you please think about going Green. Pretty, pretty please.

The “Mission Accomplished” phrase actually referred to the carrier’s crew completing its 10-month mission, not the military completing its mission in Iraq. All this fuss about the banner has been about nothing, except another excuse to criticize Bush.
05:46 AM on 05/03/2008
That is the lie pushed by the Bush White House. If you listen to the speech given under that banner, no rational person could conclude that the lie was truth. The United States and her allies "have prevailed." "Major combat operations in Iraq are over." What koolaid have you been drinking? Or are you a relative of Dana?

Thanks MPCarr and rikkirighteous...

....for advising me of just the latest lie to come out of the Republican Insurgency against the American government that masquerades as spin.

So now we went to war to finish DEM-started business (which, though re-constructed, I have heard put another way before) AND Mission Accomplished referred to that carrier's tactical mission.....which by the way had ended long before, but this vessel was kept in SD and away from its battle group just to accomodate this REP propaganda purpose, not to promote its own service or tour. That is not SOP for any vessel in the NAVY.

How long do you think it takes the average American in 2008 to dump these comments and assertions on the scrapheap of REP lies about Iraq and the War on Terror stacking up atop of WMD, involvement in 911, AlQaeda sanctuary, nuclear threat within 30 minutes, $200 billion initial war cost projection, "they hate us for our freedom", "we're fighting them there so we don't have to fight them here",....and on and on ad so much nauseaum?

How long really? Because you obviously are not close if you're still posting such nonsense with a straight face; though I guess, someone has to do the "blocking and tackling" and non-glamourous work of the REP Insurgency's propaganda machine. Based on how much the REP Insurgency has looted the US Treasury for over the last eight years, I just hope you're getting paid enough.

CLARIFYING WHICH ONE IS THE OBAMA SUPERDELEGATE:

Rep. Barbara Lee representing Oakland in Northern California is the Obama Superdelegate.

Reps. Waters & Woosley were among the first Superdelegates to endorse Senator Clinton back in 2007 before any campaigning began or votes were cast.

Let's hope they are willing to revisit their endorsement and consider making a new decision based on so much new information.

it would be a mistake to associate chimpler's appearance in combat drag and the "mission accomplished" banner with the actual war. the event belongs purely in the realm of public relations. for instance, the aircraft carrier was just off coronado, california, thousands of miles from the theater of conflict. they didn't get it quite right. this is why now all political candidates appear in front of flags and flag displays so gigantic and conspicuous that they are visible from outer space. this has somewhat mollified the critics, although hillary in front of the vast panapoly of red and white stripes looks like a pitchman keyed into a bacon commercial.

I have the same problem with flag flogging.

Another cheap shot from Mz. Waters. I'd be more interested in an accounting of her husbands income due to her position in congress.

Let's see that and then we'll talk impeachment.

The mission was accomplished! There are some out there who have made millions and that is what
it is all about. Money, money, money, money and money. All the young dead children's caskets
should be lined up end to end and end up at the front door of the Whitehouse.

Madam Representatives, Waters, Lee, and Woolsey, thank you for your commitment to bringing home our troops. I like many, are angry at the pace of change. I believe that the war is but a symptom of a greater pathology. Without a compliant media we would probably not be in Iraq and Afghanistan and/or a lot of places. Congress must act to reduce the ability of corporations with ties to the military-industrial complex to influence news. It is clear that in the present environment, that Pentagon propaganda has been passed off as "real" news.

If we didn't have media ownership in bed with the military we probably wouldn't be at war right now. I'd suggest that if you want to prevent the next war in Iran you start getting some answers from the networks.

Thank you Barbara Lee for having the character, integrity and superior judgement to endorse the candidate who provides our only chance to put a gifted, honest leader into the white house, who will unite us all to participate in changing our nation and world for future generations.

Obama/Boxer or Sebeilus '08!!!!

Even the moderates/Independants would think they are too liberal... but I would love to vote for them.
04:40 PM on 05/02/2008
As our representatives, you need to press the leadership to go forward with impeachment of Bush and Cheney.
05:18 PM on 05/02/2008
That's just not going to happen. Too many in Congress are making too much money off of their investments in the companies providing services in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Four items of good news:

1. U.S. troops have achieved victory by completing the primary objectives as defined at the beginning of the Iraq war. President Bush has said the troops should “return on success.” It’s time to do exactly that.

2. Representative Lynne Woolsey has drafted an Iraq troop withdrawal bill called HR5507. It would withdraw all U.S. troops within one year, send in peacekeepers for two years, and cancel the outdated Iraq Authorization for Use of Military Force. HR5507 would direct the Bush Administration to treat Iraq as a sovereign nation, instead of a U.S. colony that we presume to micromanage.

3. Next week, the House will vote on an Iraq War appropriations bill. That debate will likely be the last round of Iraq war funding debates this year, so we have a "use it or lose it" opportunity to end the war now.

HR5507 should be a prerequisite, or integral component, of any Iraq war funding bill.

Our presidential candidates claim superior leadership skills and, furthermore, they're already senators.

4. We have an opportunity to challenge our presidential candidates to use their much vaunted skills to endorse, publicize, and help pass HR5507 to end the U.S. occupation of Iraq, ASAP -- instead of dumping another 900 troops and $140 billion into the grinder for every year that we procrastinate.

After all, what could be more Presidential than taking the lead to end the war that President Bush is unable to end?

Five years of death, destruction, and bankruptcy. Thanks to Hillary Clinton and other Bush collaborators. Now Hillary wants to "obliterate" Iran. So why are Maxine Waters and Lynn Woolsey supporting her. No more useless destructive wars, and no more infantile maniacs in the presidency, like Hillary Clinton or McCain.

When Bin Laden said Americans don't have the stomach for war and that's why Al-Qeada will outlast us, he was referring to people like you.

Please just step aside and let the men and women who have the nerve and resolve to defeat our enemies do their job. If we had listened to you a year ago, Al-Qeada in Iraq would be murdering Iraqis by the thousands.

And how many terrorists did we kill before the "Mission Accomplished" photo opp? None; zero
How many innocent Iraqi's? 20,000?

Where/who are "our enemies"? Do you even have a clue?

******g A I DO! You gives out you gets back. Cause/effect. What, you don't believe that? Point is, balance back is pretty much the same as the power behind the movement. Takes time sometimes. To feel the ricochet. The more people bought and sold ordered by the premise, right and wrong, the stronge the bounce back. Sometimes it takes a long time before the message sent comes back at you. Kick in the head! Shit sent out. WE DOMINATE YOU. BOW. GROUNDLING! Balance is arighted to the balance the true scale makes fair. It's physics. Which has no right and wrong, it . . . ah! Forget it!

Truth sorta starts at the balance point. At ease then from here/there on out is eyewash. The rest shifts real to what goes on. The truth of the matter we experience, on the sliding scale moves both ways at once. Still in balance, my. What evidence of justice for sure sticks? Excess way to the right and left are not in keeping with the majority midway and easier going. To stretch that far or kill for it, whoa. Instead core to truth shifting polarity I guess. So finally what have we? Continuing is enuf if you don't ask for a real perfect situation.
