Latest Poverty Numbers a Wake-Up Call: We Must Continue to Support This President

Posted: 09/14/2012 4:11 pm

Earlier this week, the Census Bureau released its latest income and poverty data for the year 2011. The major headline in most newspapers and media outlets was the notion that the national poverty rate remained virtually unchanged from the previous year. While millions of Americans continue to struggle to find work and provide for their families, it's important to take a moment to reflect on what has actually transpired under President Obama's watch, and keep things in perspective. Let's not forget that in the face of this intense opposition, he was still successful in passing health care reform, the Recovery Act, an extension of unemployment benefits and many more programs that prevented these poverty numbers from being far greater. For anyone who mistakenly thinks a Romney/Ryan ticket would somehow serve the middle-class and poor better in this country, let me give you a quick wake-up call.

By now, most are aware of the magnitude and depth of the economic crisis that President Obama inherited in 2008. In addition to preventing the nation from falling off of a cliff, the President pushed forth a multitude of measures that haven't even been factored into these latest poverty stats. Non-cash government aid like food stamps, the Earned Income Tax Credit and more aren't included in the equation when these figures are compiled. If these programs were added, millions more would have been lifted out of the poverty category, according to Census Bureau officials themselves. While we are quick to look at the 15 percent figure, we must be cognizant of the fact that it does not represent the full scope of the issue or even the correct numbers. And more importantly, as we near this upcoming presidential election, we must remember that things like the Earned Income Tax Credit, food stamps and other beneficial programs would all be eliminated or greatly diminished under a Romney/Ryan plan. If we care about the poor and we want to continue reducing poverty rates, do we really think something like the Ryan plan which calls for cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, etc. is the way to go?

When we hear a number like 15 percent, anyone with a heart and anyone with compassion feels tremendous sorrow for those who are still hurting. But while we continue to work to create even more jobs and provide more resources, it's vital that we not forget what we stand to lose in this election. The Romney/Ryan (and Republican) mantra has been to push for smaller government and everyone pretty much fending for themselves. They want tax breaks for the wealthy, while getting rid of tax cuts for the middle and working class. The very policies that created an environment for our financial crisis are what these Republican candidates are advocating on the election stump. If Romney were elected as President, and Ryan the Vice President, we can bet that their interests would not be with the people, but rather with the wealthy 1% because they have openly told us so both by their actions and their words.

It was President Obama and Democratic members of Congress who pushed for an extension of unemployment benefits to 99 weeks in 2009. Without this extension, millions more would have been added to the poverty rate of 2011. It was President Obama who fought tirelessly for the auto bailout and the Recovery Act, which saved or created millions of jobs. And it has been President Obama who never wavered in his advocacy for health care reform that so many Americans desperately need during these difficult days. It's important to remember that these measures and more were all done in the face of the most bipartisan Congress, and in the midst of GOP leaders that wanted to do nothing more than to see this President fail.

Over the last few weeks, we observed both the Democratic and Republican conventions. It was easy to absorb the difference between the two parties' platforms and agendas for the future. One was dedicated to fighting for the middle-class and poor of this country, the other for millionaires and billionaires.

As we fast approach the November elections, it's imperative that we understand what we stand to lose. And you don't need to take my word for it; just look at the details of the last four years. While there is much work that remains in improving this economy and further reducing these poverty numbers, there's no question in my mind that this President is the one who will continue fighting for us and not for the status quo. Romney and Ryan may give decent speeches and put on a good show, but facts don't lie, and history simply cannot be erased.

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell had once stated that his number one priority was to make Obama a one-term President. With millions of Americans suffering, this was his and his Party's focus. You can be sure that those still feeling the burden of difficult days, and those of us who care about the future of this nation, will remember McConnell's words and remember the inaction of his Party as we step into the voting booth this November.

How about the "poor" people stop breeding what they can't afford.

Don't breed em if you can't feed em!

While, your comments are a little insensitive, I generally agree. Why are middle class families in general smaller than poor families? Why are middle class families less likely to be married than poor families? Why are middle class families more likely to have children from fewer fathers?
10:01 AM on 09/18/2012
Not insensitive but more truthful, especially if you're agreeing w/it. Middle class knows what they can and can't afford. They know that being married (think you meant they are usually married) will HELP them. They know that having children with ONE person will create a better home life for everyone in the home. They know that if they have more than what they can afford it will be struggle. Why the poor can't get the obvious, I don't know.

But, just because your poor, doesn't mean you don't take care of your children. There are some middle class, and rich that have some messed up families to the 10th power! The stigma of being poor is deep rooted! There are generations of poor, just like rich!!

Great comments below , I however fall in the catagorey of poor , I gross under 50k per yr , I don't qualify for any assistance , and pay my share of taxes. My only issue , is with the crowd that wants to reduce (entitlement) benefits . I have been working for 30 yrs now , once I turn 63 , I'm want to receive my social security then medicare , as I will have paid in for 48 years . While president BO has helped keep many from sinking , at what cost to the taxpayers , MR doesn't even recognize people making such a small salary , and plans (if elected) to cut programs from goverment , so in my case I better stick with BO , at least I can survive if I'm forced to utilize gov assistance , after all I paid for it .

blkman, your mental attitude insures that you will stay poor. You are so looking forward to gov't assistance instead of thinking of continueing to work and finding a way to flourish. This is exactly why the democrat party programs and conditions people to a life of mediocrity and dependency. But you and others refuse to see it.

Al - what is needed is jobs - good jobs.

Nobody EVER got ahead on social programs.

In producing good jobs we know obama has dropped the ball. He could have done many things or pushed for many things that would have given the unemployed jobs and many working people better pay.

The way to good jobs is through lowering the supply of labor and raiding the demand for those goods. Simple economics 101 of supply/demand that EVERY commodity has to follow. So we either follow those laws or become a two class society.

We need to lower the supply of labor by stopping most immigration and work visas - certainly immigrants who want jobs that are already facing higher than average unemployment figures. We then need to lower the supply of goods by reducing free trade with countries that are not on a level playing field with us such as most of the third world as they have no labor/environmental laws.

We had the strongest middle class and the strongest and steadiest economy when we did those things in the 50's-through the early 70's. We need to return to those ideals.

One group tells you that with hard work, education and strong family values you can make it. Al's group tells you that the government will do all for you don't need a father or man, hard work or even a good education.

All of Obama's so called successes are all about keeping poor people poor. Black's don't want handouts Al. They want jobs. You've made a career keeping your own people on the democrat plantation. Try something else Try something positive for a change.

Hey Al, we have black men shooting other black men every weekend in Richmond. When are you going to come down here and do something about it? Never I suppose since there's no publicity in it for you (unlike the Trayvon Martin case).

I think you are a money-grubbing hypocrite.

How about approaching the so called "leaders" of the community to start a food drive, start a foundation which encourages kids to stay in school, sponsor a child (or family), or start a business incubator for budding entrepreneurs? We can't rely on the federal government (or even local government) to pull people out of poverty; If you have the means to do so, become a philanthropist in your community.

Al - the key to getting people out of poverty is to create jobs and small business opportunities for all. This President, his advisors, policies and results are an embarrasment. As far as your comments are concerned about millionaires and billionaires, I have yet to hear about any of your friends writing an additional check to the IRS. Considering our President is a millionaire, where is his check!!!!

Supporting BO in the fight against poverty makes no sense at all.

It would be like getting beat up by a bully every day on your way home from school, and you decide to not move to a new school district so you can continue getting beat up by the bully every day, thinking that some day he might get tired and not beat you up.

BO has managed to get the poverty rates to decades highs. Giving him another 4 years to see if he can get the rates higher makes little sense.

I have read your comments and all the others who sound like you., and guess what it appears to me that not one of you who want to critizize this president have an original idea. You all sound the same. Ratherr than complain, why don't you run for office and lets see how good you do.

raleigh delesbore, look at how blinded you are by obamamania. There is someone who is running for office. His name is Romney, so let's put him in office and see if he can do better, if not, we'll vote him out.
06:20 PM on 09/16/2012
People have got to understand that by Romney's very own definition of any household earning under $200,000 a year is considered low income. If you earn $199,999.99 or less - you are not in the middle income group that he is focusing his strategies, messages or sights on. If you are in the low income group then here is his message to you -

"I'm in this race because I care about Americans. I'm not concerned about the very poor. We have a safety net there. - Mitt Romney".

President Obama makes clear that he is referencing household that make up to $250,000 - however when he talks about this number, he includes small businesses. Romney is not talking abut the small business community. He is talking to the Ivy League investors, bankers & financiers and to everyone in technology that has equity in their start up. But, if you are a school teacher, police officer, student, young professional, a starbucks barrista, green jobs professional, nurse or work for a non profit, you are a low income worker and his policies will not be in your best interest.

JMsGirl, it's not what Obama or Romney think. It's what they have done. Pres. Obama has put policies in affect that have not worked. And after three and a half years most people are just as bad off or worse off than when he was elected. So don't talk about what he thinks, what he said would make things better has not worked.
11:21 PM on 09/21/2012
Wow. Do you have a home or know anyone in foreclosure, because millions have been helped with the finance programs that prevented them from losing their homes. Do you need or know anyone that needs health care? Because millions are being helped if they have a pre- existing condition and could not get health coverage before his policy was signed into law. That even includes pregnancy. If you have children, they can now have coverage until they are 26. If they are in college they would have to elect the enforced college insurance which is crazy expensive. At a UC it's more than $1200 per year. What about Al Qeda? That is nearly dead and as a country we were at greater risk with Bin Laden alive. What about the number of jobs that were saved by the auto industry + the 4 million jobs created in addition to that. Perhaps your circumstance has not changed, but I guarantee you the sick, elderly, financially devastated and all of the citizens of the US have been helped by his policies. So if you make under $200,000K and Romney was President, than you and a whole lot of people are going to be considered poor and there will be an even greater in-balance in this country. However what about the very poor, the people who who make $40K and below?

If Reverend Sharpton wants to reduce the number of poor people in United States of America why does he constantly align himself with Latino-grievance groups who advocate for the importation of millions and millions of additional poor people from south of the border?

The only reason Obama bailed out General Motors was to pay back the Unions for supporting him. If GM would have filed backruptcy, the union contracts would have been voided. This would have allowed GM to renegotiate these as a rate more in line with the actual value of this labor. Bailing out GM allowed the contracts to stay in place. The people who were hurt were all the people who had invested in GM. Normal people who had GM stock in their 401(k)'s and saw this drop to zero. All the businesses who had lent money to GM saw this money disappear. The ONLY groups who benefitted were the unions!!

There would not be any poverty if the laws were changed to support children's RIGHTS! No individual has the RIGHT to have a baby. A baby should have the right to good parents or a good parent who will watch over, love, protect and PROVIDE for that child. Those who cannot provide for themselves should not be allowed to have babies. Those who fall on hard times deserve help. Change the law to force folks to get a license to have a baby, show proof of education and work history, make drug testing for all those who want to have a baby be made law. Stop enforcing bad behavior by providing free benefits to those who have a houseful of babies and throw them all out on the streets to run in gangs and packs. Babies deserve more.

Oh, wait, he has done nothing to reduce poverty.

Indeed, no one could have done worse.

Wake up America, this election is a charade not matter who win the elections; they will continue with the demise of this United States. This United States is run by the world elite, The IMF, The Federal Reserve Bank, The WTO and the Multinational corporations; their money made politicians, the US News Media and many of the especial interest organizations to work for them and support their agenda."World economic control". The world elite made our country the worse economic predator, we invade countries overthrow legitimate elected government, created chaos and fabricate lies and terror to justified military intervention, and all this is done with the help of the Washington politicians, the US news media, our Federal Reserve bank and the World bank; in the name of national security and the protection of American interest. Fellow Americans do your own research and ask yourselves why millions of Americans are dying, are they really protecting the American people or we are helping the American multinational corporations to exploit and rob the natural resources and human capital of other countries?. you must also ask yourselves why Washington push for more free trade agreements knowing that free trade destroy millions of factories and demise our economic, millions of jobs was lost by the implementation of free trade, not to mention the decreased on our wages on account of free trade that was promoted and sold to us as an economic tool to make us competitive in the world market.
