Fairness and Equality Will Save Our Union

Posted: 01/25/2012 1:20 pm

For months, we've endured the back-and-forth banter among Republican presidential candidates as they fight for their party's nomination. Relentlessly tearing each other apart and proving just how contentious and petty they can be, these so-called front-runners exemplify what the GOP stands for at this very moment: obstruction & division. Last night during President Obama's State of the Union address, we were reminded of just how much we can achieve with a unified government and with leaders who put the nation's best interest before their own political agendas. At such a pivotal time when some would have us believe that there's no such thing as income inequality, the president has called for tax reform, a ban on insider trading in Congress and more as he vowed to tackle perhaps the greatest challenge of our time: fairness. Delivering a reassuring voice to the men, women and children still suffering during these tough economic times, the president drove home the notion that it isn't about jealousy; it's about equality.

"We can either settle for a country where a shrinking number of people do really well, while a growing number of Americans barely get by," stated the president. "Or we can restore an economy where everyone gets a fair shot, everyone does their fair share and everyone plays by the same set of rules. What's at stake are not Democratic values or Republican values, but American values. We have to reclaim them." For far too long, Americans have been watching as the wealthiest among us pay lower tax rates (or avoid them all together), while they themselves continue to give exorbitant percentages of their income to taxes. CEOs have shipped jobs overseas, while those struggling to find work are scapegoated as somehow 'lazy' or inept. Following predatory lending practices that targeted certain segments of the population, some would like to pass off the blame to the victims of the greatest housing scandal in modern history.

At a time when education costs have skyrocketed beyond belief, there are those that look down upon the millions unable to attend college despite academic achievement. When more and more of the work sector requires increased education, those unable to afford it are often times left in the dust of uncertainty. And as the president articulated last night, early education has suffered a setback with tight budgets and teacher layoffs all across this country. While teachers (like Sara Ferguson who sat in the First Lady's box during the address) continue to make sacrifices and support students, politicians and those with ulterior motives attack and discount all of their selfless efforts. To quote the president -- 'teachers matter'.

As Americans watch entire companies fold, and work multiple jobs just to make ends meet, the costs of health care are relentlessly on the rise. With corporations eliminating benefits, many with full-time employment are even finding it impossible to afford health insurance on their own. In addition to the tens of millions without coverage, millions of us are only one illness away from bankruptcy. Instead of welcoming health reform in an industrialized nation with such sobering statistics, some continually attack the measure for the simple fact that it was proposed by this president.

Despite the multitude of rising challenges like income inequality, diminishing employment opportunities, lack of affordable education, health care and more, most Americans remain optimistic. They still firmly believe that hard work will yield progress, and that the notion of the American dream is very much alive. And still, some would like nothing more than to blame, castigate and demean hard-working Americans as they revel in the luxury of their unfair advantages. All the American people want is fairness; all they want is the same opportunities given to the rich and powerful. And that is precisely what last night's State of the Union emphasized: a level playing field for all.

As the president stated: "No one built this country on their own. This nation is great because we built it together. This nation is great because we worked as a team. This nation is great because we get each other's backs."

Government checks and non-producers taking from the producers (Pious Bologna). I didn't see any of these companies complaining about their gov't checks from their tax rebates, subsidies, and bailouts. Send them back and get off of gov't assistance.

Al and democrats want to take from the producers and give to the non-productive. It is the same thing as buying votes, by keeping the poor in poverty and making them dependent on a monthly government check. When you are dependent on a monthly Government check you are more likely to vote for the party that wants to make that check a fixture in your life.

While the GOP wants to give to the rich to be richer off the backs of the middle class, at least what's left of it.

Yeah cause the people who sit in penthouse offices all day and boss people around all day are 'producers' while the men and women on the factory floors, working hard every day for little more than a pittance, the people whose jobs are being cut left and right for no other reason than to further enrich the company owners, are just lazy, ungrateful do nothings, right?

No the producers are the one working at a job everyday and non-producers are the ones looking for a government check that is paid for out of the paychecks of the producers!

Al,
At the end of the day unless we can figure out how to cost effectively bring back relatively high paying/ low skilled manufacturing jobs, the middle class is screwed.
Also need to penalize US companies who do not pay taxes on overseas profits.
We need to fix education rather than endlessly talking about it if we are to ever be again globally competitive,
Pass some form of National health care & find a way to fix immigration.
These things would be a fair start to fixing things....

Some of those jobs are already coming back to the US. Seems Big Business got a wakeup call as soon as those jobs arrived in China and Mexico, that things were not going to be as easy and cheap as they had hoped.

I am African American and find the last person commenting on "fairness" should be Al Sharpton. All politicians are full of shit.. Until money stops ruling politics and the media ... I refuse to watch the debates or the SOTU .. You can't be a conservative and claim to be christian at the same time. The Greed only is a deadly sin and you can't be a Democrat and claim you are for "all" people but allow corporations to finance your campaign.. What you can do is try your best to provide for your family and stay as far away from the overly dominate white male government to make the rules on how you should live. Start thinking for yourself people and stop relying on the government to tell you How you need to live.

I don't think Black Americans relies on the Government. You are getting your information from the media, I sense that you have the brainwashing down to a fact. You should learn history, Al Sharpton has been fighting for fairness by putting his life on the line to get you what little success you may have. You don't know how it was in the old days when a Black person went to a major corporation for a job and they locked the doors in their face. And, you don't know that Blacks were barred from the NBA because they could not play at the level nor could they stand the pressure.

I was not invited to join the non-violent protest because I could not let people hit me with out retaliation. I know I benefited from the movement and so have you.

The one percent certainly do not have any of our backs. Here is one of my favorite quotes. Everyone does better when everyone does better. The rich do better because we have a job and can buy their cra$. The poor do better because they can go to school and educate themselves, then go to work and make money for the rich. Society does better because we find solutions to societal problems like environment and green energy, health. I think the problem lies with rich people like romney who make money off their wealth rather than producing anything. They have no incentive to change anything, just let the money keep rolling in.

That's why it is important to have a fair education system. Everyone is given a chance and those that chose to take advantage of the opportunity can and those that cannot for whatever reason can be consoled with the fact that at least they had a chance. What the elites want to do is take that opportunity away. We all had the opportunity of an education that was provoded by people who came before us and it is only fair to provide the same for those who come after us. Problem is a lot of people do not want to pay for those that are coming behind. Life may not be fair but American citizens should be.

Our Ed system is fair. Everyone has a chance. Where are kids NOT given a chance? Where are they being barred from education? Who is banning them from learning? Where?

So long as teachers unions have a stranglehold on education it will never get any better.

Where are the ones with millions and billions, not paying as much taxes as you. If they were creating jobs, then where are they. In China? At least let them pay a little more. You go to your job digging ditches, and collecting mail, or teaching, while they go to their offices, and figure out how much more money they can make without having to pay taxes on it.

What Al and the rest don't understand is yes we need to work together but that doesn't mean we need the government as a middle man. Fairness and equality? The government doesn't know fairness and equality.

Let me hear your proposal. Include in you recommendation, how you would protect the country from those who will do us harm and there are many and growing. You let the republicans dictate what is important and you have your say and feel good about it.

I always wonder what politicians are thinking when they say the government doesn't know fairness, when they are the government. Also, you are the government.
05:07 PM on 01/31/2012
As far as protecting the country I would remove all military from everywhere not on US soil and bring them home and post them here. I am a firm believer that if we don't have military forces in other countries around the world that that in itself would stop most hatred against the US.

As far as me being government, I know that sounds real good but I haven't ever had a say in government except locally and even then the outcome has been predetermined by the elected few. What I have found is the only contribution I have to government is a vote to put someone in power. Now if the government didn't have the power to decide how I lived my life, now that would be true fairness and equality, but the republicans and democrats would never leave me to make my own decisions. Pro government people always know what's best for me and will make a law to protect me from my ignorance.

"Equality" and "fairness" are an interesting concept to come out of one of the wealthiest nations in the world.  US wealth and income (PPP) are very very high.  The population is next to nothing (less than 5% of the world's population.)  The US should be controlling everything and producing everything for the world.  Now and forever.

Where exactly is this fairness?  Oh, yeah, I forgot.  Only within the borders of the US.  F-word the rest of the world.  The other 6.something billion people.  The 300 million in the US deserve more.

If we do not include everybody fairly in the operations of the country, revolution is the only way to change. Just think, less than 100 people practically destroyed the country on 9/11, what do you think if 1,000 people attacked the country. Collective thought to better the country, as a hold, will be the best approach.

It is so easy to talk about 'fairness' but what does that mean? Who ever told us that the world has to be fair? What exactly is fair? This is such a childish like view of the world, that somehow Obama can make everything 'fair'.

Who exactly gets to have the official definition of 'fair'?

Is 'fair' only what a Democrat says it is? How wonderful for those who live in a world where they truly believe that only the Government can make their life perfect. Only the Government has all the right answers. With all the time philosophers have spent trying to define life and it's purpose and all they had to do is ask Obama for all the answers.

Guess what, there is no such thing as 'fair'. There will always be someone with more money than you, that does not make them evil. But even if you do want to hate the big Bankers with all their huge bonuses and such at the expense of the taxpayer, don't get angry with Republicans, Bush signed TARP, but it was written and put on his desk by the Democrats who had the control over Congress when it was written. In fact all the bailouts and special deals the bankers were given all came from Obama.

I asked a few questions as well, who decides what is 'fair'? The idea of "Fair" is different from person to person, no one person has all the answers no matter what they claim and it is better to just let Americans have freedom instead of living life like a bird in a cage.

Closing with a pack of lies? What lies would that be? Don't take my word for it, go look up the TARP votes for yourself. Go look up who had control for the last two years of Bush's Presidency, I'll give you a hint, it was not Republicans who had control.

Everything Bush signed during his last two years in office was put there by Democrats.

The elites in DC will be the ones to decide what's "fair." Of course, it won't negatively effect them.

You should talk. Little, narrow-minded people questioned President Obama's intelligence. By-the-way, he needs a prompter to make a speech.

I would like to know people can, actually, close their minds when they are about to hear something that may be something they disagree with. Why and how do they do it?
