The Trayvon Martin and Tulsa Shootings: The Time for Inaction Is Over

Posted: 04/10/2012 11:28 am

Most young people today have studied the stories of the great civil rights struggle in this country and the heroic acts of many from all walks of life that eventually brought about change in America. While older generations may recall segregation or the disturbing days of water hoses and police dogs, young kids today for the most part haven't experienced open violence at the hands of bigots. Even though racial inequality clearly exists, they have been lucky to grow up in an integrated society that grows increasingly diverse by the day. So when news of the Trayvon Martin shooting first broke, it was no surprise that it sent shockwaves among our youth -- and continues to do so today.

To add to the troubling climate, over the weekend, three black adults were shot to death and two were wounded at the hands of white gunmen who have since confessed to the horrific act in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Though not officially ruled racially motivated yet, this latest incident has all the underpinnings of a despicable hate crime. It's no wonder young people have taken to the streets to march, organize and let their voices be heard. We are at a precarious moment. We must stop ourselves from regressing. We cannot allow our future to be hijacked with hate. We need not a moment, but a true movement immediately.

When people discuss justice and equality, they often forget that progress didn't simply take place overnight or occur in a vacuum. Countless individuals organized and strategized actual concrete steps on how to bring about change. They saw unfairness, figured out mechanisms to tackle it and organized a massive effort. Today, when we witness these unfortunate reminders of the historical imprint of racism resurfacing, we cannot act as if the issues can simply be swept under a rug. It's time all of us engage in a long-term conversation on the elephant in the room -- race. And as the Trayvon Martin case tragically proves, the topic cannot be discussed without dedicating an equal amount of time towards a serious look at our justice system. In addition to the criminalization and harassment of young men (and women) of color, the system often unfairly favors those not deemed a 'threat'. Case in point: we are still waiting for the arrest of George Zimmerman, the accused shooter in the Trayvon incident.

But the difference between mere rhetoric and sustainable results is action. Gravely troubled by these recent events and more, major civil rights leaders, clergy, victims, parents, grandparents and concerned folks from all races, backgrounds and communities are assembling in the nation's capital this week. From Wed., April 11th through Sat. April 14th, National Action Network (NAN) will be conducting its annual convention where we will discuss these issues and more, while we plan and organize a strategy to combat them. In addition to a slew of panel discussions and plenary sessions, we will be holding a 'Measuring the Movement Forum' event at Howard University next Saturday with the first-ever dialogue between the mothers of Trayvon Martin and Amadou Diallo. We will organize ways to energize the country on pressing social issues that really do impact each and every one of us. And we will formulate concrete steps for achieving those goals.

There are some in positions of power that would like nothing more than to make us believe that racism, classism and other inequities don't exist. But they do. And the only way to combat them, and stop our nation from reverting back to days when the Trayvon and Tulsa shootings were the norm, is to have an honest dialogue and most importantly, take action. The worst thing we can do is come together and walk away doing nothing. There is far too much at risk.

We owe it to the next generation to allow them to live in a better world than we did.

I believe what you are overlooking Rev Sharpton is the fact there will always be bad and good white and black people. There are many bad whites and blacks. When you have a white person commiting a crime or trying to harm someone they may end up getting shot. This also holds true for a bad black person. You cannot walk around in an imaginary bubble claiming every black person is a victim. Maybe you could do more being proactive than reactive. You organize rallies after the fact. Why don't you use your wealth and knowledge and create more Christian gatherings, school meets, sports meets to divert youth and teach them respect, honor, and honesty.

he's not overlooking, he's ignoring. He is a pot stirrer, a fomenter, an agitator...he can't get donations spreading Love around.

Rev. Sharpton, I am glad to see you speaking out against sensless murder. With Zimmerman being hispanic and black heritage in his family, also a spokes person like you defending black racism. Killing is bad in any race or community. I hope you use your fame to preach this message above all. Just look at the true number of blacks killed and by who. Save your people from each other.

You left out the many more Asian, Hispanic, Polynesian, Mixed and other Whites killed or injured by members of their own race.
You need to watch and read from a variety of information sources and not just what you see on FOX.

Let's do so. Afterwards we can drop these false notions of superficial, divisive labels.

I totally agree. Many of us tend to try to make decisions based on the impact our decisions will have on our offspring. Some men do as well, but I just find this true in many of the women I meet.

tired of this kids photo at 12. Tired of your racist rants while hiding behind the title rev. If you represent the teaching of Jesus...the turn the other cheek and PRAY for your enemies. But you serve another god..a small g god. He is called the FATHER OF LIES. The few who listen to you wont be able to find rocks to hide under either when the GOD OF THE TRUE BIBLE returns. You have spurned out hate division strife and every other kind of evil that follows.

94% of black men are killed by other black men .ā€
84% of white men are killed by other white men.

And what this should mean is we have a problem. We have to start thinking about where the rage is coming from. Once you take a life regardless of the color of the victim or the color of the hand on the trigger you can not get it back.

I thought conceal and carry was supposed to cut way down on gun violence? Gun rights have been given waaaay too much consideration outside of the constitution's intention....for the purpose of a militia....isn't that what it says?

I believe they charged him to make the black community happy and not riot, its all about the money, he'll be innocent in the long run, like the prosecutor said if it was so hard to come to this they will have a harder time convicting, Innocent till proven guilty.....................Good luck on that one..........

Sharpton mentions an elephant in the room that we are trying to ignore. He is too modest. We do not ignore a race-baiting, professional African-American. He is too often in our face.

The Elephant he is referring to is himself.... he is very hard to ignore..... joke

Trayvon Martin's case is anecdotal. Where is the swell of evidence revealing white murderers of blacks are not properly prosecuted or the same as other admixtures of race (so that we can compare)? This may indeed be a big problem. But, let's share the evidence of this. If it doesn't exist, maybe it's time to fund a study to reveal what is true. Until the, why is anyone taking sides. It seems racist to do so, especially when most of the vocal blacks bestowing their opinions claim Martin was an innocent victim, and most of those defending Zimmerman are white and/or hispanic.

Thank you Reverend Al Sharpton for taking flack yet again in the name of justice and a fairer society. Walking while Black should not be a crime punished by being shot dead by strangers. My heart goes out to the African-American community in the US during this time. We are all One. I am a white women and I have been around long enough to know how unfairly Blacks are treated by law enforcement. This is an unbearable example of such unfairness and how entrenched it is in America. I put myself in the shoes of any parent, friend or family member who has an unsuspecting loved one shot dead on the street as they walk along minding their own business. When the shooters are white and the victims are black, and then the police just let the shooters go Scot-free, I am afraid. Maybe as I walk my little dog around my neighborhood someone will just shoot me dead, then be released with a loaded gun to shoot some more "in self-defense". God Bless you Reverend Sharpton for always putting yourself on the line for justice. You have become one of my heroes. May people show some decency and respect towards those no longer alive for no good reason, some respect for the dead, in these discussions.
