Religious Leaders Support White House on Contraceptive Coverage

Posted: 02/ 8/2012 1:24 pm

On Feb. 6, Mitt Romney had this to say about the inclusion of contraception as a covered service in health insurance: "Think what that does to people who are in faiths that do no share those views. This is a violation of conscience. We must have a president who is willing to protect America's first right, our right to worship God." His comments follow weeks of lobbying by the U.S. Catholic Bishops against the White House proposal to only exempt purely sectarian organizations from including contraception in health insurance.

Today, I am pleased to be one of 23 national mainstream religious leaders who affirm the White House decision. Together, the Catholics for Choice; the Central Conference of American Rabbis; Concerned Clergy for Choice; Disciples Justice Action Network; Episcopal Divinity School; Episcopal Women's Caucus; Hadassah; the Jewish Reconstructionist Federation; Jewish Women International; Methodist Federation for Social Action; Muslims for Progressive Values; the National Council of Jewish Women; Planned Parenthood Clergy Advisory Board; the Rabbinical Assembly; the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice; the Religious Institute; Society for Humanistic Judaism; The United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism; Union Theological Seminary; Unitarian Universalist Association; United Church of Christ; and Women's League for Conservative Judaism represent millions of religious leaders and people of faith across the country.

Our statement and signatures follow:

"We stand with President Obama and Secretary Sebelius in their decision to reaffirm the importance of contraceptive services as essential preventive care for women under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, and to assure access under the law to American women, regardless of religious affiliation. We respect individuals' moral agency to make decisions about their sexuality and reproductive health without governmental interference or legal restrictions. We do not believe that specific religious doctrine belongs in health care reform -- as we value our nation's commitment to church-state separation. We believe that women and men have the right to decide whether or not to apply the principles of their faith to family planning decisions, and to do so they must have access to services. The Administration was correct in requiring institutions that do not have purely sectarian goals to offer comprehensive preventive health care. Our leaders have the responsibility to safeguard individual religious liberty and to help improve the health of women, their children and families. Hospitals and universities across the religious spectrum have an obligation to assure that individuals' conscience and decisions are respected and that their students and employees have access to this basic health care service. We invite other religious leaders to speak out with us for universal coverage of contraception."

Today, I am pleased to be one of 23 national mainstream religious leaders who affirm the White House decision. ... Today, I am pleased to announce that I am one of the millions of people that do not agree.
10:05 PM on 02/09/2012
Lol, I am not surprised at this list. This policy is an attack directed at the Roman Catholic Church. Dissident Catholics, and those of other denominations, have no issue with it.
11:02 AM on 02/10/2012
Is the RC church just the bishops or does the definition of RC church include those laity who count themselves as members? Whichever answer, it appears the policy might be an attack only at those who hold power in the RC church.
07:13 PM on 02/10/2012
No, the Church is not just the Bishops. However, the doctrines of the Church are not supposed to be a mere reflection of the views common to the members, never mind the views of the secular society.
08:03 PM on 02/09/2012
So how do the above stand re: the constitution and the first amendment?
Sure, one may agree with the pill, but does one agree with forcing other religions to act against their morals? THAT's the issue.
The above want to provide the pill? Fine just don't force others.
10:56 AM on 02/10/2012
Nobody is forcing you to take the pill. You retain your freedom. You shouldn't seek to take away somebody else's freedom.
09:11 PM on 02/10/2012
No but the govt is forcing someone to sell it.
Which is what the const is all about.

I don't defend the pill.
I defend the Constitution.
07:32 PM on 02/09/2012
I will post this as well if you do not buy into my statement in regards to the effect of Birth control mind you there are other pieces on this so this is to wet your appetites.

So you and a bunch of groups that have not existed prior to the 20th century wish to support contraception I advise you to look at what contraception especially many of the Birth Control options including permenant sterility, a change in your genetic and chemical structures, Birth Defects, and additionally diviorce, discontent and various psychological issues that alone should prove this does nothing to keep Women or Men healthy and can cause serious damage. I also note in the document posted by eastfernstreet below shows a considerable amount of people who signed that document support giving contraception to children of 14 years of age thus violating the rights of children and going down the same road that the Catholic Church did and is now paying a price for despite its work to make right those damages. your Order and the other hack "religions" that support this need to seriously look at what they are supporting before it is to late.
10:55 AM on 02/10/2012
This is not support of contraception. It is support of RC people to not be forced by their bishops. The church should teach and not force their views on employees. Having the freedom to make up one's own mind is freedom of religion.
08:01 PM on 02/10/2012
This bill would force the Contraceptives to be issued in Lieu of a Heavy Fine which could potentally damage a business finacially and do harm to the users. by agreeing to this you DO support the destruction of business as well as Contraception. I advise you read closer as to what these groups are supporting and asking having the right to decide for ourselves is free will which is also a violated since the bill that is supported tells us what we must do and gives no room for argument Freedom of Religion allows us Priests, Bishops, and Ministers the fundemental right to teach and practice the Faiths we hold so dear as well as gives all people the right to Practice those teachings as per their Will (This is something many people here on these boards choose to attack by commenting stupidity or other rhetoric that often has nothing to do with the article) Getting on track though, The Churches in all REAL Religions not just the Catholic Faith many have walked all over Religion because of the peaceful way we try to teach so you all laugh and abuse so now we kick it up a notch and push back Deal with it because it won't go away.

Thank you Rev Haffner. It's important to realize that while the bishops may have a big megaphone they speak for almost no one but themselves.
07:30 PM on 02/09/2012
You think they speak for themselves at least they want to see new life come into this world and not see people endanger themselves and others. I find it interesting that the group of geniuses in D.C. can support the preservation of fertalized Sea Turtle Eggs but refuse to preserve the Future of Human Life.

While we may not agree, and at times fervently argue against each other on points, on this we find mutual ground.

Thank you for your support of human rights.

I couldn't agree more. I fully support the President, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and the mandate for access to birth control for all women. I thank the religious leaders who have endorsed this legislation. It is a basic human right for all of us to make informed decisions about our healthcare and reproductive care. Access is part of that.

Why does the Catholic church insist on remaining in the 14th century? We've come a long way since then; women are no longer chattel and gays are no longer in the closet, just to name a few of our accomplishments. But the Catholic heirarchy, blinded by ideology, would have us reverse that progress. Absolutely frightening.

so why do people like you and others incharge of this and other great nations continue and devalue life so that results like this and other examples of Moral Lethargy exist?

What is devaluing in preventing a pregnancy that is unwanted? If couples practiced natural methods of contraceptives, such as withdrawal or the rhythm method, the Church barely notices.

But buy a piece of rubber and take a pill to achieve the same effect and suddenly you're "devaluing life".

This is a ridiculous argument.
09:17 AM on 02/09/2012
The Government has no business enforcing church law. 98% of Catholics use contraception against the church's teaching so if the church can force people to pay for it out of pocket then more people will be in line with the church rules because they can't afford the insurance.

Notice that the church is not saying that they have to pay for insurance their members will never use. It's because they don't allow their members to use it. Again, The Government has no business enforcing church law.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? OKOK let's do it your way....Because that works for me too......excommunicate the 95% of Catholic women who use birth control or stick to your guns and they will move on on their own. Whether you like it or not Catholic women have used birth control since the 60's, they want birth control and they choose the amount of chidren they will have. You don't see women with 8 children sitting in the pews anymore do you? So have your backward ideas and sit in the front pew all by your lonesome. Regardless of what you want these are the facts. Take a minute to think where your religion is taking you. You and your brick wall are the reasons people are leaving the "Catholic sinking ship" in record numbers... that's the truth. We can talk about you calling birth control pills an abortion method when in fact with birth control stops the egg from being fertilized. That's the truth too.
07:52 AM on 02/09/2012
We are dealing with the problem of a disconnected and discredited elite group of catholic bishops who do not know or don't care that about 95 percent of catholic women use birth control and ignore their ridiculous teachings. These people are now allied with the women-hating evangelicals fighting to bring America back to the dark ages. I salute Lawrence O'Donnell for making the important point that this kind of problem could only happen in the United States because we are the only western nation without a civilized universal health care system. Only with a stupid inefficient and corrupt sysyem that works by employer mandates could such a problem even arise. Bravo for Vermont!

What happens when the next President, whenever he or she takes office issues guidance through the Department of Transportaion that because of increases in distracted driver fatalities, no one operating a motor vehicle can use a cell phone or wear anytype of hat or headgear to avoid limiting driver's vision fields.

It is common sense, meant to protect the public, save lives and flies in the face of Muslim and other religions practices. But this new President will give the country a year to adapt to the new law.

Bet not all 23 of these chruch leaders would sign off on that law. Remember the President is only trying to take care of people.

Given the opportunity to be born??? What does THAT have to do with the coverage of contraceptives? Is every sexual act that doesn't result in a baby now considered a defacto abortion??
