Posted: 01/18/11 05:31 PM ET

Editor's Note: Is the end of the world coming? With new mass animal deaths being discovered regularly, many people have started to wonder if the apocalypse is indeed imminent. HuffPost Religion blogger and Culture Editor of America Magazine, Father James Martin, S.J., discusses some possible explanations for these phenomena as well as what the bible says about the end times.

He does realize that a majority of Americans believe in the Bible as the literal translation of the word of God, and believe that Revelation accurately depicts the end? These people would also attack him for being "non-Christian."

Onanism is the answer.

christians have had it wrong all along. it is the end of an "age", not the end of the world, which is described in the bible.

As Enock pointed out, this article is using a centuries old trick of misusing the term Apocalypse incorrectly. The long-misused term "apocalypse" actually refers to the revealing of long-hidden secrets and the solving of ancient unexplained mysteries, which thereby causes the rapid collapse of traditional dogma, assumptions, and the wealth and power long associated with them. It does not mean disaster or "end times" though an Apocalypse will signal the end of these deceptive religions.

The book of Revelation was written as a handbook for martyrs.

First, (Wiki) Apocalypse means: It is a disclosure of something hidden from the majority of mankind in an era dominated by falsehood [sic]. Children know this as the age of Revelation [sic]. If priest head a story, like an old Sufi story about a man that was saved by a fish, they would flock to his house to hear of this miracle! When they would put a 'warrent' on him to tell of this, he would then tell them that he was starving to dead, and as he layed in the sands, a 'fish' jumped out of the water, and he ate it, and it sustained his strength until he made it [home]. The priest would say this is a miracle made by Jesus Christ. The atheist would know that 'The Christ' is a [title] and they would 'hope' they would use some of the carpenter tooks, like the square, to straighten their crocked path, and use the compass to 'circle' their way of thinking! :)

Good comment on straightening their ways and squaring their deeds...

Good to see it...

There is really nothing to say to this kind of question. Is our children learning?

Apparently, not.

We have allowed our waters to become poisoned and undrinkable, our air to become polluted and unbreathable and the very staff of life, our crops to be turned into monoculture, genetically modified, health robbing "products", all in the name of unholy greed and profit.

I truly believe that any reasonable, thinking, aware person who is not concerned about the mass die-off of aniimals, fish and birds is in deep denial of the very deep trouble our world is in right now.

Because of shortages, food prices may fluctuate like the price of gasoline in the not to distant future. Wait, I was mistaken, this has already started.

Is the world coming to an end? Oh, no, no. And here's why: Revelation is a metaphor and not meant to be taken literally and what we should do is keep our eyes upon Jesus, who literally was God and was resurrected and said he would come back, but that no one knows when.

It's a shame that so many obviously intelligent people waste their lives contemplating and spewing complete nonsense.

Actually, Jesus was yet one more apocalyptic prophet who believed that the end of times was nigh. it was not until he was nailed to the cross that he realized he was in error. However, "John"'s gospel and Paul re-wrote history and found a way to cover up the error of Jesus.

"what we should do is keep our eyes upon Jesus,"

That's the best advise I've ever read on Huffington Post.

Well, if people are predicting this as a sign of the end of the world, we should probably breathe a sigh of relief. The main thing about predicting the end of the world in the past has been that when people predict it, it doesn't happen.

No. But they do signal problems, largely of our doing for which we should take responsibility and figure out how to rectify.
