The Resignation of Eve

Posted: 03/16/2012 7:43 am

As found in the Roman Catholic Church, Southern Baptist Convention, and many other denominations women are still treated as second-class citizens. There are churches in America and abroad in which women aren't allowed to speak out loud unless they get permission from a man first. There are several churches in which women aren't permitted to preach from the pulpit.

A recently written book, "Resignation of Eve" by evangelical minister Jim Henderson argues that unless the male leaders of conservative Christian churches do some serious soul-searching-pronto, the women who have always sustained those churches with their times, sweat and cash will leave. In droves. And they won't come back. This is because women of faith are increasingly breadwinners, single moms and head of households and their children, traditionally brought to church by them, will thus join the growing number of Americans who call themselves "un-churched."

There is a natural, and deliberate movement by women of the church to challenge the system of sexism and collectively demand that their gifts not be ignored any longer. Women are proclaiming that God has called brave dames like Deborah as recorded by the book of Judges to be bold and relevant leaders for such a time as this. Deborah was nobody's victim, she makes Xena the Warrior Princess look like Lady Gaga. Although, she lived more than 3,000 years ago, Deborah was the quintessential modern woman. She was a wife, a judge (one of 12 in Israel) and "a prophetess." Against 900 iron chariots and a powerful general named Sisera, she took action. At Barak's request, Deborah went to Mount Tabor with the troops and with God's help, they defeated the Canaanites.

The woman had backbone. She was nobody's trophy. In fact, she picked up the trophy for God in her celebration and praise of victory amid adversity. Women like Deborah, it is time to resign the position of being Eve in that all biblical women spent their time turning men on to sin? Using their feminine wiles to trick ditsy male relatives? Being silenced, humiliated, traded and man handled? God is looking for a few brave dames, like Deborah. Their judgment inspires. Their wisdom springs from a tight relationship with the Holy. And at the end of the day, they sing full-throated victory anthems, not about roaring human complacency, but about thundering Holiness.

From the outset wome were treated with disdain. When Adam and Eve went erred Eve was "cursed" with labor pains. While Adan was just told tot get a job. Abraham, one of the bid daddies of the faith treated his wife as an object and even used her to save his own skin.

I am a woman, married to a disabled man who couldn't be a traditional head of household if he wanted to. I am also "unchurched" in the Christian sense. I left because the role models who spoke to me were ignored in the modern church. Evangelical - when I have to be head of the household, make all the financial decisions and act as caregiver - no fit there. Mary, the wife of Joseph and mother of Jesus - good role model, but the church that venerates her does discount my gifts and strengths. I felt abandoned - by all of them, relegated to altar societies and women's guilds, but never to minister or preach. I moved on. As a wiccan, I am able to be that strong priestess who acts a pastor and teaches ethics. Too many in the church forget what Jesus said to husbands: "to love their wives as Christ loved the church" - bearing in mind that he gave his life for the church. To say that women should be submissive and quiet, the handmaids of men discounts an amazing body of gifts, knowledge and strength to make a difference in our world. Deity manifests itself through us, our interactions in the world stand witness to faith. Why make second class citizens out of half the community of faith?

Well stated. Mary was a teenaged girl who did her godly duty and acted as in incubator. The fuddy duddy patriarchs of the churches are losing the grip they had on society as their numbers dwindle.

Blogger: Deborah was nobody's victim, she makes Xena the Warrior Princess look like Lady Gaga. Although, she lived more than 3,000 years ago, Deborah was the quintessential modern woman.

---

You get an "F" for simile on that one.

Gaga is one helluva warrior woman, who has had an amazing effect on the global dialogue concerning gay acceptance and the problem of bullying. She's quite the role model, and (in many ways) the quintessential modern woman.

Here are some options that would have worked better:

Deborah was nobody's victim, she makes Xena the Warrior Princess look like...

I agree with you that another example would have been better. My purpose of writing this article was far more than a simile. At the time I thought about Lady Gaga because for the reasons you mentioned. I love her...

The perpetuation of faith in an unseen, unresponsive deity, is due in large part by the inability of individuals to fend for themselves. Modern times have taken away the need for women to gather berries to sustain life and hide behind men for protection.

Women no longer need men to provide, and protect them. It is conceivable that the next stage they would no longer need an unseen force to gather their strength.

Even with all their faith when God failed them, it was his will.

Alex0393 I might be pushing it that the Southern Baptist Convention treat women like second class citizens. I do find it quite offensive that women make up 70-80 percent of the largest Protestant body with most of the contributions from this group and it doesn't even attempt to ordain women in leadership positions especially when the membership is and will continue to decline. The Bible says you treasure is where your heart is and if you feel comfortable giving to a body that believes that God only calls men into ordain leadership blessings to you. Persons like you will keep the doors of this church open afterall. Maybe I care more than you do.

Amazing that it took this long for women to start leaving churches in droves.

As the official story goes, Holy Creator/cretin 'Yahweh' gratuitously inflicts agonizing pain (commonly known as torture) on all childbearing women forever (effectively sealing his status as All Time Biggest Torturer / Abusive Father on Earth). That womankind have continued to flock back TO him makes the last 6,000 years or so, somewhat less than their proudest moment.

Don't get me started on the men-folk.

We can tank Zeus, all of the other dusty bookshelf gods, but mainly women themselves, for the advances in gender equality that women have made, fighting the men in robes nearly each and every step of the way.

I've been attending southern baptist churches my entire life (I'm 49) and I have yet to see a woman much less women collectively treated as second class citizens. Articles like this make assumptions because it is written in the Bible that women shouldn't speak in church. I mean let's be real, women aren't the dominated quite passive housewives people like to think. Most women have a large amount if not the predominate amount of control over their husbands and I know of none who would allow their husband to tell them to be quiet in church

Anecdotal evidence is still anecdotal evidence, perhaps you don't recognize the treatment of women as second class citizens because you see it as normal treatment.

Have you ever attended a southern baptist church which allowed a women to be a pastor?

Tough crowd. Look it up. He went to the IC to investigate. Do you really want to protect this column that badly?

This author was sent to the Ivory Coast in 2002 to investigate charges of child slaves picking cocoa. I would like to see something published on that matter by him.

A Message from Eve

Do not walk in the garden with God.
In the brush there are serpents,
spiders, bats that
bite, bite, bite,
and in the water are alligators,
crocodiles, sharks with
teeth, teeth, teeth.
An elephant may charge
at any moment
a leopard may leap.
You will be trampled, eaten
and skewered.
The apples cannot be trusted.

Very pretty poem. You are the founder of a congregation? I'd be interested in learning more about your theology.

We don't have a formal theology. We appreciate any science, art or poetry that celebrates nature--both the beauty and the terror found in it. I am the only human although we have guests from time to time. Mostly plants, animals, rocks, clouds and such make up the congregation.

Eve, may your journey through life
be blessed with happiness
and not fear of the creatures God hath made.

So quit hiding behind men.
Why is life such a fear?

Agreed. It was "walking in the garden with god that caused all the problems" along with fear of the apple also caused by god.

It is interesting to note that a number of Native American tribes have a story of the "fall" not unlike the Eden story when animals and mankind stopped speaking the same language. It was the end of paradise. This kind of story seems to be a literary archetype.

Nice try, but there is no amount of scrubbing that can remove the ugly stains of misogyny throughout the OT and NT. It is time for advanced society to discard the bronze age trappings of the past and embrace rational and biological fact.

'And at the end of the day, they sing full-throated victory anthems, not about roaring human complacency, but about thundering Holiness.' How vivacious to say such a thing Reverend William. During this time of the Apocalypse, which means the 'unveiling,' we should explain to women the [29th Cannon] and why Priest dress in black and since they know the father's prayer or Lord's prayer, teach them the Mother's prayer as taught by Jesus: "And after this manner pray to your Earthly Mother: Our Mother which art upon earth, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, and thy will be done in us, as it is in thee. As thou sendest every day thy angels, send them to us also. Forgive us our sins, as we atone all our sins against thee. And lead us not into sickness, but deliver us from all evil, for thine is the earth, the body, and the health. Amen."
