GET UPDATES FROM Rich Siegel
Rich Siegel has been in the ad agency world for more than twenty years. He has been freelancing for the past four years, mostly at TBWA Chiat/Day where he has worked on and off for the past 18 years (under the legendary leadership of Lee Clow.)

In 2005, Rich took a short respite to publish and promote his book, Tuesdays with Mantu, My Adventures with a Nigerian Con Artist. It’s what happens when an ad guy turns the tables on those ubiquitous Nigerian Internet Scammers. Since the book’s release, Rich’s website www.tuesdayswithmantu.com has had more than 400,000 hits.

While at TBWA Chiat/Day, Rich created and was responsible for the now infamous ABC “Yellow” campaign. A groundbreaking campaign in broadcast history that had the nerve to celebrate the medium of television. The work generated more than $12 million worth of free publicity including mentions in Rolling Stone, CNN, Entertainment Tonight and the crowning achievement, a scathing op-ed column by Maureen Dowd of the NY Times.

During the dot com craze, Rich also created and was the Executive Producer of a film, HOME MOVIE, directed by Chris Smith. The film premiered at Sundance and followed with a theatrical release shortly thereafter. HOME MOVIE set the standard for advertising/entertainment convergence. It was branded content before anyone had ever heard of branded content.

Not only did the film earn critical acclaim (Two Thumbs Up by Ebert & Roper), the commercials cut from the documentary for Chiat/Day client, homestore.com, were recognized at the Cannes Advertising Festival.

Additionally, Rich has won every one of the major advertising awards (One Show, CA, Cannes Lion, ANDY, BELDING, etc) for an eclectic group of national brands: Apple Computer, Earthlink, Lexus, Jaguar, Sony Playstation, Hewlett Packard, Taco Bell, Pioneer, Infiniti, America West Airlines, Castlemaine XXXX, and many more.

Rich has also worked with former Executive Producers of THE SIMPSONS, Bill Oakley and Josh Weinstein, on their animated show MISSION HILL. On the strength of a spec script, Rich and his writing partner Rob Schwartz (now ECD at TBWA Chiat/Day) were hired to write the final episode of the short-lived series.

Un-Thanksgiving

0 Comments | Posted November 23, 2011 | 9:53 AM

Thanksgiving is almost here.

We all have the day off (except for some of my unfortunate advertising colleagues forced to write last-minute Super Bowl Spots). We'll spend time with family, football and hopefully some fizzy drinks with high alcohol content. And we'll express our thanks to the Lord, to the...

Confessions of a Two Percenter

Whether it's on the Daily Show or the daily pages of Facebook, the Occupy movement has provided a wealth of comedic material. This sign, taken from the streets of downtown Boston (I believe), is one of my favorites.

But the movement itself leaves me straddling an uncomfortable fence.

Read enough business books and you'll stumble across this golden nugget of wisdom, "aspire to be the dumbest person in the room." That is hardly a difficult task when planners/strategists/Chief Experiential Innovation Officers put...

My Jewish Daughter's First Communion

Well, it didn't take long at all.

As I mentioned earlier in the year, my daughters are attending Catholic High School. And as I suspected, the experience has already started to bear fruit in the way of funny stories.

Last week was the girl's first mandatory mass. They had...

A Passover Reflection on Middle Eastern Freedom

Last night was the first night of Passover. Naturally, we had family over to eat bitter herbs, strange fish and cardboard-like bread material. And we recalled my people's exodus from the land of Pharaoh.

But as we were reading from the coffee-stained haggadahs that have been stashed in a drawer...

We're a week into the new Egypt and only time will answer the important question of what's next.

I'd like to share the optimism of the many, but I'm more of a cynical pragmatist than a Pollyanna. (Just for the record I was one of the first people to...

Though thoroughly agnostic and born of an Episcopalian mother from the working town of Paisley, Scotland, I identify myself as a Jew. Always have, always will. I don't keep Kosher. I don't study the Torah. And I couldn't begin to tell you the...

I write a lot about Islamo-fascists or Muslim extremism or Middle Eastern Neanderthals, pick whatever name suits your fancy. It, and/or they, represent the biggest threat to western civilization in my humble opinion. If I were 25 years younger I'd volunteer to serve in the CIA or Army Special Forces...

Dear Governor Bentley,

It is with a heavy heart that I write to you today. As a leader of Congregation Temple Isaiah in Culver City, California I feel it is my obligation to express grave disappointment over your recent remarks at the gubernatorial inauguration. In which you stated:

Lately I've been seeing a lot of incredibly gauche Hanukkah displays around Southern California. Of course Hanukkah is over now and it's time for the gentiles to break out the inflatable snow globes, the plastic Santas and the Nativity Scenes.

I can look high and low around my neighborhood,...

We are in the thick of the season. And when I say season, of course I am referring to the Hanukkah season. As evidenced by this rather over-the-top decorating extravaganza spotted on my drive home from work.

Maybe it's the generation gap talking...

One of the things I miss living in Southern California is the mob. I'm sure the Mafia is out here, it's just that I don't see it and I don't have any connection to it.

That's probably a good thing.

The same was not true when I lived in NY....

In a recent interview, Sarah Palin stated, "we gotta stand with our North Korean allies." Clearly this potential GOP Presidential candidate needs to brush up on geopolitics. I might suggest some simple mnemonics.

North Korea -- Naughty

North Korea -- Not Friends

Or, North...

Next Tuesday, you will get up early before work. You will skip breakfast so you can get to the polling place. And you will stand on an excruciatingly long line, wedged between a 19-year old woman who won't, (correction: can't) get off her new Droid phone and a 58-year old...

Shortly after September 11th, 2001, I decided life was too short to deny myself every pleasure known to a married man. So, despite my wife's disapproval, I bought myself a jacuzzi for the backyard.

It was a brilliant decision.

My decision to leave the corporate world and work at home has provided many rewards. A flexible schedule. Stress-free Sunday nights. Tax write-offs up the ying yang. But none of these superficial rewards compare with the experience I had yesterday.

As I was taking groceries from the trunk of...
