So He Never Went to the Floor...

Last night, during a segment on The Kelly File, I asserted that U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) took to the House floor to make a claim that President Barack Obama was born in Kenya. That assertion was incorrect. As I tell my audience each and every week, we are here to inform, empower, and help folks get their voice back, but in this case I was misinformed, and for that I apologize.

I have to hand it to Megyn. She generates riveting and thought-provoking conversations. It's exciting. She ensures that her guests are not consistently using the same old bland talking points. She is able to derail the stale and forces me to think on my feet, which is why I appreciate and look forward to being on her show.

To be clear, while Rep. Gohmert was in fact one of 10 co-sponsors of the "birther bill" -- a bill requiring that any presidential candidate include with the committee's statement of organization a copy of their birth certificate -- he did not take to the House floor to speak on the bill or request the president's birth certificate.

That said, while Rep. Gohmert didn't say it outright, there is no doubt in my mind that by co-sponsoring this bill, he contributed to the "birther" narrative.

I can't help but point out the irony in my mistake, considering that the topic of the segment was Harry Reid's claim that Mitt Romney hadn't paid taxes in 12 years. I felt that it was similar to many Republicans' claims about President Obama being from Kenya and their endless campaign to have him release his birth certificate. I was not claiming that either side is correct in their claims. It is business as usual in the world of politics. But in discussing all the false claims, I made one myself, and I apologize.
