An Insult to Veterans

Posted: 07/25/2012 4:58 pm

In a July 24, 2012 editorial on the speeches by President Obama and Gov. Romney to the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) national convention, the New York Times commented:

"This was a chance for Mitt Romney to show that he could be a better international leader than President Obama, who has already proved himself in that field. He fell far short."

The Times was too kind. The misrepresentations and outright untruths presented by Gov. Romney were nothing less than an insult to the intelligence of his audience and all veterans. Gov. Romney' address presents a target rich environment, but several stand out.

· He claims that the president has "diminished American leadership." He ignores the coalition President Obama put together for Libya, including not only NATO nations but also the Arab League. And he ignores the coalition of NATO, Japan and even Russia and China that has imposed unprecedented sanctions on Iran. All independent polls show America's standing in the world has risen sharply under President Obama's leadership.

· He faults the president for the sudden "abandonment of our friends in Poland and the Czech Republic" by a "unilateral concession to the Russian government" on missile defense. In fact, missile defense components are already in these countries because the Obama administration redesigned the system, tailored it to the threat and thus was able to deploy it years earlier than the previous plan. And the Russians are at least as angry at these deployments as with that earlier plan.

· He contends that "strategy" is not driving the presidents defense budget. He appears unaware of the new national strategy promulgated by the Obama administration detailing a "pivot" to the Pacific to face future national security challenges, a strategy with a budget supported by the entire civilian and military leadership. Indeed, it is Romney whose defense spending plans are devoid of strategy. He proposes devoting at least four percent of gross domestic product (GDP) to defense regardless of threat, strategy or budget circumstance, a figure reminiscent of the Cold War. And he has no plan to pay for this additional $2 trillion in spending -- and debt -- over the next ten years.

· Despite the Governor's claims, the president's budget does not have "massive cuts" and there are no "wholesale reductions in the nation's military capability." Under the president's budget, U.S. defense spending will continue to grow, albeit at a slower rate, and America will continue to account for approximately 45 percent of global defense spending. He appears not to know that the massive cuts he fears are due to the 2011 Budget and Control Act, a result of Congressional action in general and the particular refusal of the GOP to consider any revenue increases to address the budget deficit

· He asserts that the sequester cuts would weaken the Veterans Administration and that he would not let that happen. But President Obama has already ensured that the sequester, if it comes to pass, will not affect the VA. Gov. Romney did not mention his flirtation with replacing the VA with vouchers, a move that would decimate the VA's world class hospitals and research into veteran injuries such as loss of sight or limbs, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Post Traumatic Stress. He also seems to have ignored the fact that the GOP budget of Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI), that he supports, would cut $11 billion from next year's VA budget. And of course, he would not give the Obama Administration credit for the largest increases in the VA budget in 30 years and for the expansion of care for women, mental health services and ending the shame of veterans' homelessness

Perhaps most cynical of all was Gov. Romney's statement that he was about to start an overseas trip and "Since I wouldn't venture into a foreign country to question American foreign policy," he was making his case to the VFW. But surely he knew that his speech would be in the tabloids the next morning when he arrived in London and that his specific references to Israel and Poland would be reported in those two other stops on the trip.

Two of the most important characteristics for leadership, and certainly for the position of Commander in Chief, are straight talk and care for your subordinates. Gov. Romney's VFW speech failed the first of these. His time at Bain Capital, where he took care of his wealthy investors regardless of what harm might befall the workers, failed the second.

The local DAV (Disabled American Veterans) chapter holds its meetings at the VFW hall. Many of the chapter members are virulently anti-liberal and religiously pro-Republican. There is some cross membership with the VFW, where the sentiment seems to be even more intense. These same people confuse war mongering with patriotism and jingoistic bluster with patriotic speech.

It’s impossible to have a rational conversation with any of the pro-GOP members. All they can do is SHOUT out Republican talking points and personal attacks, and try to shout over anything that someone else tries to say. It’s very simple for them, if you don’t agree with them, you’re a traitor. The greater problem is that many people see veterans as knowledgeable citizens and take these misguided opinions seriously.

A person's actions always speak louder than their words. Thank you, Mitt Romney, for showing america your true character during the Vietnam War when you selflessly served your country by fleeing to France. Thank you, too, for not having any kids serving in our armed forces during this war, as they surely would be responsible for causing countless American deaths. With your guidance, President Romney, maybe our soldiers can finally restore peace in France.

Unless Romney is reading from a script, he sounds like a boob. Doesn't know much about anything except screwing companies for financial gain. That he was very good at.

Romney has never been on the international scene, much less served in the military to know anything about either. He would be a very poor Commander-in-Chief, much less a CEO, in this regard. You will also note from his past statements last June, he said he had no comment about Afghanistan, because he did not have enough information? Romney is intentionally evasive because he is about as unprincipled as he was portrayed in the primary campaign. Romney’s convictions depend on their current political advantage, despite whether or not any of our troops continued to be killed there. And people want to vote for this clown to handle our foreign affairs?

Romney did not serve in Viet Nam as he requested an "objector" status. Obama was, of course, too young for the draft; however, he has proven himself as Commander in Chief by making hard decisions. One could only guess at the decisions an objector would make if he was forced to.

Romney is a foreign policy neophyte who would be a complete malleable puppet for the necons. We've seen this movie before, and it did not have a happy ending.

This is amazing. During time of war taxes were cut! People were told to shop! It was party time. Never in the entire history of the World have taxes been cut during a war! These are children playing at killing - it is not real to them! They have not lost anyone in this war! They have no knowledge of the suffering, and pain war brings. They are so removed from the horrors of war. The dead are just numbers!

As a 27-year veteran of the Air Force and Army, I wholeheartedly agree. Rough, tough talk about bigger defense budgets means nothing to those of us who served; it is empty political rhetoric from someone who assiduously avoided serving in a war he enthusiastically supported.

In addition to Obama's significant, demonstrable support of veterans and military families, his wise, precise, effective use of military force only after the failure of all other options (diplomatic, economic, political, educational, scientific, etc.) shows a maturity of leadership that we find much more telling. We've had it with the chest-thumping chicken hawks.

One thing Romney said that didn't as of yet get any attention was that he said that communism was defeated in WWII. Not one member of the audience made a sound of dissension. I guess they all forgot the Cold War and the fact that there are still plenty of communist governments still hanging in there. We have one 90 miles from our own coast. I guess Mitt forgot that Cuba is very real and by the way so is China, Vietnam, Laos, Cyprus, and a few more. Didn't you learn anything in all those expensive prep schools and colleges, Mitt?

Mitt Romney is as qualified to be president of the US as former senator Larry Craig is to teach tap dancing. I know, you all probably think if there's anything Larry Craig is qualified to teach is tap dancing, not if you teach it in Texas where they do the Texas Two Step. One misstep and you're dead and you take out an entire line.

A, 'voucher,' is a little slip of paper that promises something. It would appear that Mr. Romney wants to give the veterans of this nation little slips of paper for their service to this nation instead of what we have earned. Just as one can never really know what a little slip of paper is worth, I have a little slip of paper for Mr. Romney.

Isn't that what they put in the social security fund as they plundered it and now claim it is broke and needs to be outsourced? What makes anyone believe the slip of paper will be worth anything?

As I watched (some) clips of Romney addressing our wonderful vets, I couldn't help asking "are these vets really falling for this crap?" Too often we have seen the chicken hawks (those who defer) send our husbands, sons, and daughters into conflict all too easily.

Ask any Vet who has seen the horrors of war...my dad, WW11, my brothers Viet Nam, and my son, Gulf War and Iraq...if you can get them to talk about it.

Thank you Colonel, for the telling observation our media will not, or choses not to, tell it like it is. Your words have not fallen on deaf ears, and your message needs to be heard in all military publications, as well as your story told by all major publishers and heard on all broadcasts. This election is THAT IMPORTANT.

I implore the rest of society to visit a Vet in the VA...just for an hour or a day..Don't ask what your country can do for you, ask a vet what they have done for their country...you will be humbled....

Thank you for that wonderful post. I too have family that has fought for this country including the American Revolution through the first Iraq War and Mitt made me want to puke. He claimed to love this country but neither him or one of his 5 sons put on a uniform and stood up for the USA.
