I Got My Start in America at the Golden Globes

Posted: 12/29/2011 10:45 am

In between eating, drinking, visiting folks, arguing with extremist fundamentalists on Twitter and plugging various shows and DVDs, (only the last one of these is absolutely necessary, the first few I do for fun) my main focus of the the last few days and the next few weeks has been the Golden Globes. I've written a few jokes, written and recorded the promos and done the press pics. Now I just have to pop up on a couple of chat shows and do press interviews. The problem is I think I've said everything there is to say about the ceremony really. But that won't get me off the hook. It all started for me in America at the Globes I guess. And now I've come full circle. This WILL be my last turn as host. At least for a long time anyway.

It all started eight years ago.

A couple of weeks after the final episode of The Office aired in the UK, I was flown to LA by the BBC to attend The 61st Annual Golden Globe Awards.

I nearly didn't go as I thought it was a long way to travel to lose. And I was quite sure that that was exactly what was going to happen. Arriving on Saturday, 24 January, the day before the ceremony, I had to go shopping on the morning of the awards for something to wear. It wasn't Armani, it wasn't made to measure and it wasn't even given to me for free. Didn't they know who I was? No. Hardly any of them did. Anyway, the new outfit did the job, so now I could get this pointless exercise over with. Jane and I got back from the shopping mall and immediately had to get ready. It's nice putting on a tux with jet lag in 90-degree heat. We left the hotel at about 2 pm and I hadn't had lunch. I got the limo to stop at a garage on the way and I bought a family pack of some sort of Cheesy Wotsits. I ate these in time to get out at the red carpet. Jane pointed out that I now had orange hands and lips. I washed in the ice bucket and tried to get some of the gunk off my teeth and gums with a tissue. We wondered if the girls from Desperate Housewives in the limo next to us were doing the same thing. Maybe. They did all look a bit orange when they got out, but it was probably a tan rather than monosodium glutamate.

To cut a long story short, the unthinkable happened and The Office won the Golden Globe for best sitcom.

I made a rambling impromptu speech and of course forgot the name of the organization that awarded the honor.

Little did I know how many times my name would be linked with the Hollywood Foreign Press in the future.

Moments after I won the Golden Globe for best actor in a comedy, I made another rambling speech and was swept off to do loads of interviews. I can't remember any of them to be honest but I remember thinking it was one of the most surreal and important nights of my career. It still is.

The next day I shot my first dramatic role in the TV show, Alias - I still haven't seen the episode, but I've heard it came out OK.

The same week we started negotiations on a US remake of The Office. That came out okay too. And I was called in for an audience with the team behind The Simpsons. Matt Groening asked if I'd like to appear in the show. I said, "What are the hours?" He said, "The hours are great." I laughed and said, "I'm joking. Of course I want to be on the show. It's the greatest show in the world."

Later Al Jean asked if I wanted to write the episode, too. This moment overtook winning the Golden Globes as the greatest moment of my career so far.

I also met one of the writers, Matt Selman. He directed my episode of The Simpsons a couple of years later and at the moment we are working on The Flanimals movie together. So that came out okay too.

A lot happened that week in January 2004. The effects of which are still being felt. I was asked to host the Golden Globes in 2010. I guess it went OK as they asked me to host again in 2011.

Judge for yourself how that went...

I did it twice because I wanted to improve on the first year's performance. I think I did that. I did it by realising a crucial fact about award shows. They are fucking boring unless you are winning an award. Celebrate yourselves by all means. Take yourselves as seriously as you want and hand each other prizes. But don't televise it unless there's something in it for the viewers. An award show is not a spectator sport. I tried to make it one. I made a choice. Please the 200 most privileged people in the world, in the room, or please the 200 million ordinary people watching around the world on TV? I chose the latter. It wasn't a particularly brave decision as things like that don't really affect me either way. I don't really count them as part of my oeuvre. They are outside my career so to speak. I host the Golden Globes, like some businessmen play golf. For pleasure. Then, Monday morning, I'm back at work. I don't have to worry about what I say based on who might give me a job one day. If I think it's funny, and/or true, I'll say it. You see, I create my own labour. I write all my own material. I direct and produce all my own stuff basically. I'm not beholden to any so-called 'big wigs' or overly important people. Some would say I've got 'Fuck You' money. I would say I please myself and always have.

It's not about power. It's about artistic freedom. And if it is about power, it's a power you can give to yourself anytime you want. If you can't be bought, you're the richest man in the world. I just always feel if you can make something from scratch you'll always be okay. Growing up, one of my favorite quotes was "Ability is a poor man's wealth." John Wooden said that. And I tried to prove him right.

Amazingly I've been invited back to host next year's ceremony, too. What have I learned from last year's outrage? Nothing at all. Ha ha. Happy New Year.

An open letter to Ricky Gervais.....A. That's the letter. The grade you get for making the mundane superworldly, when life gave you shit you made 'shit-ade', bravo, bravi, brava, brave man. It isn't often that the disparity between the working stiff (me, me, pick me) and the star (you, you, who picked you?) is so eloquently waxed (waxed: verb, past tense-1. to kiss someone's ass. 2. To engage in an activity ephemerally). I hate to say I liked your essays because liking implies waxing, I loathe to say I was indifferent to the humor in them because that would represent perfidy. The essays were short (brevity is the soul of wit, or Mitt, or Newt, all 4 letter words are pejoratives) and focused, short and focused, a show about a midget with a goal Damn, too late, you have that one in the bag. Keep it up, keep it fresh, keep it lubed. After all, if we stop moving we stop secreting. And you my friend have secreted "comedy gems!"

A true comedic genius.

At least this year's Golden Globes will be entertaining.

If only you could say the same about the Oscars. With Eddie Murphy out as host i'm planning to skip that borefest alltogether.

I love gervais's attitude.life is too short (it really is 20somethings) to waste it doing things you don't want to do.who cares if Tom Cruise has his nose out of joint because Gervais made a crack about him? awards shows are boring.the only one's I have enjoyed watching recently are the one's gervais has hosted.he's funny,he's unpredictable,he's not in awe of the whole Hollywood Royalty b.s.nonsense(who says tom hanks is above ridicule?) he takes risks,he doesn't play it safe & he plays to the viewers, not just the 2 hundred overblown egos in the rm.I was so bored & frustrated watching the Academy Awards this yr.I wanted to scream.I'll take gervais any day of the wk.

Spot on - Gervais is irreverent, brave and hilarious.

And what's more he's genuine and thoughtful and incredibly clever.

I would never had bothered watching the Golden Globes before but I have loved watching the last two and I'm really looking forward to the next one.

He's brought a previously dull ceremony to a whole new international audience and there's no doubt that he's got people talking about it.

It seemed the responses to Gervais for his Golden Globe monologues were disproportionate to the content: at that point, what he said had been said a million times before by other comedians, print & video magazines and TMZ (frankly, the jokes were - and remain - a bit tired).

It appeared that what people wanted to express in their complaints were two things:
- Superficially, that this was a night of self-congratulation and that what could be said behind these people's backs would be in bad taste to say to them in person on this night: it was fine to do Charlie Sheen jokes just not to his face outside of the context of a roast (as the hypocrites would have it).
- Underneath, there was a come-uppance that a bit of Hollywood wanted to deliver to Gervais for his ease of success in the American media due to him being too much of the darling of the Hollywood taste makers and comedic-anglophiles. It is not acceptable to say that one does not find British comedy unfunny because it makes the claimant sound unsophisticated. This was their opportunity to put him in his place by expressing public admonishment under the auspices of proper manner and decorum.

the indignation displayed by celebs @ gervais's jokes at last yrs. g.g. was the reaction of spoiled children being told no for the first time; pure petulance. Esp.tom hanks, robert downey, & bruce willis.I thought the joke re willis being ashton kutcher's father was the best joke of the night. this yr. I hope they will all be as sharp & edgy.I saw gervais & johnny dep on a british tv talk show recently & they were hilarious together.depp didn't seem to care that gervais dogged his movie during the G.G. Hollywood takes itself way way too seriously.

I waited on John Wooden at Monty's Steak house and he told me son "Don't put any sauce on my steak" one of my favorite quotes. You have learned you still can't be bought Rick . 2012 will be no different, I do not like the American "Office" and wish you would have done more with that. HNY

Clearly a chic marquee undertone gravtationally sensed throughout these moments captured within the overall writen essense on time with Ricky Gervais flear. Impressions faint strike me keen to his on the chaise courting of captivation on the chaise. Even toned sound view fairly apprehentions motief rite or wrong wireless couldn't capture all the poise in caricture spewed out along these lines. Hollywood has reinvented the look now Gervais seamlessly fit's the bill. y son is 2 1/2 the first time I ever saw Ricky was on Sesame Street. He tries to sing a song to Elmo to get him to sleep using the letter "N". http://croftbay.co.uk I didn't know who he was so I looked him up. A parody of this might make a funny skit for the Golden Globes.

RG is the bomb, I've never seen an award show that made me laugh, want for more, and stuff it in your face bombastic reality. Caustic, nasty, blunt beyond compare yep that's why I love Ricky Gervais!!! You let it rip Boy I'll be watching!

Ricky Gervais, you are awesome and funny, and you're "I don't care about what other people think" is inspiring. I like that quote "Ability is a poor man's wealth."

Gervais is a breath of fresh air and I admire him for carving out such a career by refusing to toe the line but I don't understand why he's doing a third Globes.
Do a couple and leave em wanting more is a mantra that's never failed and should apply to this gig too.

What will happen this year? The industry will be there anyway, the TV awards geeks will watch anyone present it and the rest of us will merely wait a few hours before logging onto his best bits on the youtube.
And all it'll be is a few good jokes and jibes plus the obligatory hoohah in the over sensitive media.
Bit like last year then...

It's not too late Ricky to bale out and watch it at home in your pants with a few beers, pizzas and Karl. Besides, wouldn't you rather watch Carrell do it once? I know I would.

My problem with Ricky Gervais is that he did not stay in Scranton long enough! After that one brilliant elevator scene, I was left wanting to see him weekly with Dwight, Jim et all. I haven't watched that show since Carrel left.

Looking forward to the G Globes!
