Robert Polner is the editor of the book America's Mayor, America's President? The Strange Career of Rudy Giuliani, published by Soft Skull Press in May, 2007. Polner worked in the City Hall press room for Newsday during the last four and a half years of Giuliani's tempestuous eight-year tenure as the city's mayor, covering his rise (including his re-election in 1997), his fall (a failure to steal Hillary Clinton's thunder in the 2000 Senate race), and his resurrection (on 9/11).

Strange doings in Rudolph Giuliani's corner these days as he struggles to stay atop the GOP heap.

First was the bogus "surprise" cell phone call from his wife, Judi, as he addressed the not-so-friendly N.R.A.

Now, his campaign backtracks from an oddly themed fund-raiser requesting donations of $9.11. ("Sickening," is...

How interesting to hear Rudy Giuliani decrying "these terrible attacks" on David Petraeus, considering the former mayor's history of lashing out against another decorated general, Barry McCaffrey.

Speaking on an Atlanta radio show on Sept. 12, Giuliani slapped at Hillary Clinton's comment that Petraeus' testimony on the progress...

In the spirit of the minute-long You Tube video, "Gays for Giuliani," which is aimed at highlighting the former mayor's backpedaling from his once strong support for gay rights, I have another suggestion:

How about "Liberals for Giuliani"?

I'm talking about not just another You Tube video, which...

For Giuliani, Championing the Yankees Pays Dividends

Rudy Giuliani occasionally boarded a police boat at his official residence, Gracie Mansion, for an express trip with his entourage to Yankee Stadium. He never ceased to remind New Yorkers that he was the team's greatest fan, and he reveled in generous handling by the team's principal owner, George Steinbrenner...

While the math-challenged Rudy Giuliani eagerly tallies foiled terror attacks worldwide ("it's about 21, 22, something like that, the last time we counted, which means about one every four months. So this is a very persistent enemy," he told Fox News' Sean Hannity on Monday) I just want to return...

Rudy, Reagan, and Taxes

Rudy Giuliani waves the flag of "fiscal conservatism" in an appearance in Des Moines today, linking himself to Ronald Reagan.

The comparison actually is apt. During each of his eight years as mayor, Giuliani increased government spending -- by a whopping 9 percent in his last full budget...

Religion and Rudy

This week, the campaign of Rudy Giuliani curiously refused to say whether or how frequently he goes to church.

"The mayor's personal relationship with God is private and between him and God," the campaign wrote in reply to an Associated Press survey of presidential candidates in both parties, reported June...

Kudos to the National Review for actually taking the time to cover what Rudy Giuliani says are his views and positions when he's out on the campaign trail. The magazine's approach is a notable departure from much of the mainstream news media, which is focused, even at this early...

Juggernaut Giuliani?

Before too many national political writers get carried away by the latest take on the GOP primary -- namely that social conservativism has a weakened hold on the GOP primary voter, homeland security trumps all other issues, and the Mayor of 9-11-01 is the horse to watch -- consider...

One person Rudolph Giuliani is not likely to mention in his high-paid motivational speeches is Bernard Kerik, who served as police commissioner on Sept. 11, 2001, and who, largely on the strength of that, was nominated by George W. Bush to become U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security in late 2004.

News Item: Rudy Giuliani's business has expressed interest in purchasing the Chicago Cubs, along with Hall of Famer Ernie Banks and a Los Angeles buyout firm.

It's a startling move for the self-anointed No. 1 Yankees fan and Hillary Clinton (self-described Cub fan) foe.

Then again, maybe he'd move to...

Run run Rudolph, and try to keep up with John McCain's conservative credentials.

The trouble is, that's never an easy or a graceful gallop if you're a former mayor of a heavily Democratic city who once counted the Liberal Party as a key ally and stayed at the home of...

Rudolph Giuliani knew me as a face in the gaggle of reporters posing questions at his frequently bellicose City Hall news conferences, and as a byline pointing out his pronouncements, pitched battles and contradictions in Newsday. But my four years-plus of covering Giuliani, including his diffuse second term, turned me...
