Rob Reiner has directed some of the most popular and influential motion pictures of the past two decades. He has created films that have won both audience enthusiasm and critical acclaim. It was, however, his Emmy Award winning portrayal of Michael Stivic, the son-in-law of Archie Bunker in the hit series "All in the Family," that made him a household name.

Reiner's early directing credits include This is Spinal Tap, Stand By Me and The Princess Bride. As a principal and co-founder of Castle Rock Entertainment, Reiner's succession of box office hits includes When Harry Met Sally..., Misery, A Few Good Men, and The American President. Recent projects include Ghosts of Mississippi, The Story of Us, Alex & Emma, and the upcoming Rumor Has It..., starring Jennifer Aniston, Kevin Costner, Shirley MacLaine, and Mark Ruffalo.

In addition to filmmaking, Reiner is a tireless advocate for early childhood development programs and policies. In 1997, he was instrumental in initiating the White House conference on the subject, produced a prime-time television special for ABC, and launched the I Am Your Child foundation to continue and expand the national public awareness and engagement campaign. In 2004, I Am Your Child evolved into Parents' Action for Children to reflect an expanded mission: organizing a national parent's movement to ensure that our nation's policies strengthen America's children and families. Parents' Action for Children develops parent education materials, connects parents with one another, and fights for issues such as early education, after-school programs, health care, and high quality, affordable child care. In 1998, Reiner chaired the successful California Children and Families Initiative (Proposition 10) to improve early childhood programs in the state. In 1999 he was appointed by Governor Davis to serve as Chairman of the Commission (now First 5 California) which oversees Prop 10's implementation and the distribution of over $600 million a year to early childhood development and education programs in all of California's 58 counties.
Also active in environmental efforts, Reiner was recruited by open space advocates and conservationists to help in their effort to save Amhanson Ranch. With Co-Chair Chris Albrecht, Reiner and a team of grassroots activists and organizations, including Heal the Bay and NRDC, successfully halted a proposed development that would have devastated a large Santa Monica Mountains watershed and destroyed the indigenous endangered species and irreplaceable habitats. Now a permanently preserved state park, the 2,900-acre expanse is under the care and protection of the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy.

Reiner and his wife Michele have three children.

In a time of unlimited news access through twenty four hour cable television and the internet, it's understandable that--at times--the line between fiction and non-fiction can become a bit blurred. Today's real life events can sometimes seem like they came out of a Hollywood production company.

This is why it's...

Sometimes Predictions Are TOO Easy

Posted January 9, 2006 | 09:11 PM (EST)

If bloggers should learn anything from newspaper columnists, it is that the annual ritual of year-end political prediction columns is really just a way to embarrass so-called pundits, and should be avoided by the rest of us at all costs. While that may have been sage advice in the past,...

Taking Inspiration and Giving Thanks

As is the case with any democratic institution, the free market functions effectively only when consumers have all the facts. A brilliant new film by Robert Greenwald, Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Prices, tells the real story of the corrosive effects that Wal-Mart wreaks upon the communities in which...

Where Have You Gone Woodward & Bernstein?

Posted May 10, 2005 | 12:07 AM (EST)

Just yesterday, I was in the midst of a rant about the abysmal state of education funding in this country when a friend rejoined, “We get the government we deserve.”

I have been fighting this toxic mixture of superiority and cynicism since I became involved in the child advocacy...
