Lear on the Heath

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

Monday, the world was treated to the spectacle of a seemingly intelligent man of the cloth, named Jeremiah Wright, intoxicated by the giddy exhilarations of lights, camera and press action -- behave like any two-bit celebrity from reality TV. It was a sort of psychological portrait of a bad father figure, at the National Press Club -- a Post-Modern Vaudeville Abraham trying his best to sacrifice a child on the alter of his manic high self-regard. The American circus, once again, exploding in a cacophony of the narcissism of the ongoing cult of personality which fuels all news cycles. I must also drily note that the good reverend's appearance seems to have been orchestrated by a gleeful and fervent Clinton supporter, another member of the clergy (sigh), named Rev. Dr. Barbara Reynolds.

Tuesday, Barack Obama, riven with quiet anger came out at a press conference in North Carolina, and finally dropped the other shoe. He stood there, and with certitude said "enough is enough." He was visibly appalled, outraged at being labeled a pandering inauthentic politico by his(semi/faux) surrogate. Still, you can see how painful it is for Obama -- how it goes against his intrinsic sense of loyalty and history -- to finally jettison the mad Reverend Wright.

What the last day has been about for many Obama believers, was how long it would be until the inevitable denunciation. One knew, of course, watching Wright rage madly about HIV as a government conspiracy against minorities, not to mention American terrorism and "God Damn America" still being justified, and his mockery of various regional dialects -- that it was a matter of hours before this strange modern Lear on the heath would be excommunicated.

What I find sad is that Wright's soul-sick glee at being heard nationally has all but obliterated whatever was good about the work the man did for decades on the south side. Well, media attention is an intoxicant, and humility is the first quality to collapse when one is drunk with the sounds of one's own narcissistic dialectic. Wright, of course, messianic, and thrilled, and out to sell books, will keep it coming". It's an American tale.

Hopefully, now, Barack Obama can return to a campaign of honor, of hope, and of ideas that inspire. There are miles to go before he sleeps.

No matter who wants this nonsense to be The Issue in November, they will see a race with Obama next to McCain, and the obvious choice will be Generational. Yes, GENERATIONAL.

Not race, not religion. Look for the contrast in generations to startle America back to The Issues: War, Money, Oil and Medicine. The differences on these four topics will Dominate The Fall.

Why didn't he just rise above it?

Here's what I think happened. Obama does share Wright's anti-amercan views, always has. Wright couldn't stand it when Obama denied that he shared his views, so he spoke out like this. What other explanation is there for Wright's behavior? He's just nutso? What?

Obama supporter's can rationalize this, but you can't take that searing screaming of God Damn America out of our heads. Some people can live with that. Some people can't.

"Obama does share Wright's anti-american views" - hmmm, thats why he became a UNITED STATES Senator. Yes, that makes perfect sense.

Wow! What is wrong with Ohio? You believe some pretty strange stuff frustratedinohio. Obama is anti-American? Are you out of your flipping mind? Why do I bother - you're probably one of those fools who believed Clinton's lies about NAFTA too. You do know that it was the Clinton campaign that gave the wink wink nod nod to Canadian officials - "It's just politics." Right?
Oh and who was it again that screamed goddamn America? Right - the Rev. Wright, NOT Obama! I so fear the ignorant will again choose against their own well being and the well being of this country by voting in the idiots who have spent so much time (and our money) ruining our country, and yes, Hillary is one of them! She is owned by the corporations and really doesn't give a shit about America. Wake up people!

What is also instructive about this is how this episode so clearly shows how drastically different Obama is from Wright. Wright was given the opportunity to comport himself on a national stage and look at what he says and how he acts (selfishly and deplorably).

Whereas Obama has now been right in the middle of the national stage for 15 months now and has, at least in my opinion, conducted himself admirably the entire time.

I feel relieved to done with this man who is nothing more than a distraction built upon bitterness and doubt.

Senator Obama has done the right thing in denouncing this man, and I hope that he is allowed to step outside of the perpetuated media "wright" circus that has for too long now stolen show.

Thank you for your succinct summation. In my opinion, it is spot on.

God, I hope this wasn't too little, too late. We need Obama...but the Republicans will never let this rest.

I'm frankly sick of the whole "ooooh...the REPUBLICANS!" argument. They have done nothing for this country in the last eight years but get us into a downward spiral here, and abroad. I'm sick of people pussy-footing around them. That's enough! I'm willing to fight for my country (as I did for 20 years...I just retired from the AF in December) The republicans will HEAR my voice when I pull the lever for "D".

I'm an indie that leaned Republican, but now I lean center/left. We know thier tactics, and it's time to stop being scared of it and FIGHT it. Enough is enough! They don't get my fear or my vote ANYMORE.

It's not surprising that Clinton supporters were in on this blatant attempt to sabotage Barack. How scummy can you get. Fortunately, this is a good thing for Barack because he has finally cut all ties to this crazy, narcissistic, gas-bag Wright. And for all you people who keep asking "Why was Barack associated with Wright for so long?", give it a rest. He was not BFFs with the man. He belonged to a church in a neighborhood where he was working and forming ties, and where his future wife grew up. Understandable. As for you holier than thous who keep asking "Why did he let Wright baptize his girls and marry him?", he was the Pastor of the church, who else was going to perform those duties at the church?
