The resignation of the brilliant Samantha Power from the Obama campaign is a bit sad. She is a superior thinker, a great mind, a first rate writer and human rights' actvist, who has illuminated dark truths in the world, notably in Africa -- and whose credentials far outshine those of the Hillary Clinton partisans who led the pitchfork brigade. Besides, it is not outside the realm of possibility that Senator Clinton IS, in fact, quite literally somewhat monstrous. She and her team DO seem willing to stoop to "anything," as Ms. Power claimed. All power mongers do; it's what makes them effective. They won't be stopped, nothing gets in their way. What. So. Ever. Ms. Power perhaps giddily forgot that the press is always the press; a scorpion in the water, and not friends at dinner. For even a moment. Sigh. A loss. Score one to the Clintonian machinery. I do wonder about the Clinton family wandering about the West Wing, where the ghostly whiff of pardons handed out like Christmas candy to commodities criminal Marc Rich by William Jefferson Clinton still lingers in the air.
Like many things today, this fight will continue to torque and wheeze and turn ugly, uncivilized and lengthy.

The resignation, of course, would not have happened, had the banal and hungry engines of the "news cycle" merely yawned, like all the journos actually did when hearing the quote; after all, it's no biggie: Hillary has been called a lot worse, even by people who admire her. Perhaps she's a beautiful monster, in the French sense...? In the meantime, a very smart thinker, a brilliant writer, and an asset to the campaign has been lost. For now.

Power was ousted not because of her "monster" comment but because she had become a liability to the Obama campaign. In her BBC interview she commented that Obama's Iraq withdrawal plan was only applicable in the "best-case scenario", adding that such a "best-case scenario" is unlikely. Her words were: "he will, of course, not rely on some plan he's crafted as a presidential candidate..". This was the second time a senior sdvisor compromised the Obama story line.

This was a serious blunder on the part of the Obama campaign that somehow is blamed on Hillary.

It would be refreshing indeed if the media/press would ignore 90% of the ridiculous crap that gets said in ANY election. After all if the media didn't cover an attack what would be the point in launching one. And then the story gets kept alive even longer as the freeding frenzy on the blogs start.

I'd like to see the media and the blogs start demanding answers, real discussion and debate, town halls, I don't care how its done on questions that are important to America and the future of our nation.

I haven't really heard much from either candidate.
They talk about ending the war, getting health care, fixing the economy, which are of course all intertwined.

But I think there are even bigger issues that are more dangerous and have a bigger long term impact on where we are going as a nation.

The first thing I'm interested is if either of them have a plan for restoring the rule of law and getting rid of signing statements and putting the Constitution back together?

Are either of them in favor of, or even interested in bringing this fricking administration in for investigations?

My guess is no because it would not be politically healthy.
The last time Hillary Clinton worked on a committee to impeach a President was 1972 (not Bills of course) when she dug up the research that led to Nixon resigning. I think she has been paying for that ever since, particvularly once she came to Washington. I don't doubt for a minute that the neo-con club (PNAC) were pushing for her demise.

But, her attitude is Fuck you, sometimes that is a good thing if you ask me.

Anyway, she can't be perceived as going after them for revenge. Obama is about reaching across the aisle and letting the past go so I don't see himgoing after them either.

Sorry, but to me this is a very important issue. The precedent that has been set by these bastards is just one of the steps down the slippery slope into decline.

And China, I want to know what their ideas and plans are about China. Why isn't anyone asking, no matter how vaguely there should be some info, some idea of they stand.

How about Israel? What's up with that? Are either of them interested in the Palestinians getting a state? If so, when are they going to discuss it? I want to know.

And this corn ethanol, by many accounts its a losing proposition that the corn lobby is not allowing descent on? What?

If Brazil can go green in regards to fuel in 10 years then WTF is it taking us sol long. Wouldn't it make sense to hire whoever got Brazil's energy independence up and running?

Oh, there is more, but no body really cares, they want to jump all over for name calling and retaliations and equate this with that and tit for tat and prove once and for all that Clinton is a Demon from Hell and Obama is a gift from Heaven... or some variation in either direction. The media looks for blood, if it can't smell it, and nothing comes then they create it and the rest of us slaver, waiting like hungry dogs to rip into whoever the opponent is of "their" candidate.

It has really put me off this whole election.
Not the candidates but the the creepy, self righteousness and finger pointing from the "followers"
What a drag when we could have had an amazing election.

So, I'm just not interested in who called who what, the further escalation by the journalists and supporters in defending someone who doesn't need defense from attacks but rather needs support to stay clear and focused. And I'm sure not interested in the drivel that gets spat at "the other side." Its ridiculous when there are real things that need to be done, questions that need to be asked.

I don't get this idea that we're going to change how things are done and end politics as usual but all you ever read is exactly that.
What the hell are we waiting for?
Does this mean if Obama loses the hate Hillary campaign continues?
So then all of Obama's inspiration winds up being for nothing?
If it is real then you do it anyway. If it is about the change and not about the man, or hating the other person, then we get off our asses and stop this crap.

No, I don't know how, I've been working on it for decades.
I'd just like to see the media not cover anything but the actual things that mean something, that make a difference... and I'd love to find some progressive blogs or news organizations that do the same without the frigging hysteria.

Wow.
I think I had a temper tantrum.

I just ask if there is ever rioting in the street can y'all go tear down Fos, MSNBC etc first?
What a fricking sin.

Well maybe Hillary will win and surprise us all and take down the neo-cons... but that will just give those determined to hate something else to hate her for.

Writing in Obama if the Dems nomination is stolen by Clintonites is a valid response. I'm on that bandwagon -- as a first-time Dem Party joiner this year I expected Hillary to behave like a lady -- tough but stoic in the face of attack, prejudice, sexism -- something like Eleanor Roosevelt -- who was cheated on, disrespected and even taunted by opponents but mangaed to overcome, remain decent and become a world leader for peace after FDR died. She also did much more in the White House to push for reforms during the Depression --prompting the New Deal. Hillary couldn't hold Eleanor's sensible shoes. I began as a Hillary booster and have been slapped in the face by a cut-throat politician who'd rather win than set a standard -- Hill has learned alot from Rove.

I think you people really want to be led by the GOP forever. Why do you think that we have had 3 GOP presidents that have had 2 terms compared to 1 Dem since 1960. You sit on you high horse and in November you can say high to President McCain and seeing what your high morals have gotten you.

Let's go one step further. The Clinton campaign could have shut down the press frenzy on the "monster" comment. Instead they let it drag on for a newscycle, happy that the Obama campaign would be thusly bogged down. The campaign could have said that Samantha Power is a phenomenal scholarly talent who has repeatedly praised Hillary Clinton on the record, and who, for one moment, let the overheated campaign get to her. The Clinton campaign could have sent the signal that it was not "politics as usual" and given Power a pass, but instead Power's contribution is lost... for now. Irony abonds from the team who compared Obama's demand that Clinton release tax returns and White House records from the 1990s to a true monster, Ken Starr. Is Howard Wolfson resigning from the Clinton campaign for that comment? No. Clinton actually said she agreed with it.

LaviSoloway,

Let's go one step further?! Seriously, I kept on reading your post, sure that I would see some sign that you were attempting humor. I thought that the author surely was joking. But then, I had to finally stop laughing, realizing that no, this person is SERIOUS!

You actually are going to state that this is, or was, a situation for which responsibility should have, or could have, been assumed by the Clinton camp? I really, truly, sincerely, wish you had been joking. It's just so bizarre, that I wish you were not serious.

I mean, I really think I need to stop blogging. This is crazy. It is a waste of time -- if this is the type of responses one gets to debate with.

WHY, on Earth, would there be one rational reason to place the responsibility, to clean or clear up the mess created by Ms. Powers and her unfortunate -- and rude, and unprofessional -- statements on the Clinton camp?

Ms. Powers is a big girl. SHE can take responsibility for HER own actions. And Mr. Obama is a big boy. He can handle his own staffing problems. Neither Ms. Powers nor Mr. Obama need Ms. Clinton or her staff to handle their apologies, or their statements to the press, for them.

Yes, that is completely rational! Someone calls Mrs. Clinton a monster -- and it is HER responsibility to apologize and clean up for THEIR remarks. Do you have any idea at all, how ridiculous you sound?

Thank you for your post. It will encourage me to stop blogging. I knew I was wasting my time, but I continued to do it. Hopefully, your truly remarkable and absurd statements will help me in getting away from the keyboard -- or at least, away from blogging. Thank you again.

P.S. Should I have had my mother type this post for me? Maybe I should have had someone else do this for me -- right? I mean, I'm a grown-up, but you've got me really confused now. I am not sure if I am responsible for my own statements or not. Maybe I should have had someone else step in as my surrogate or something. UNBELIEVEABLE.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:04 AM on 03/10/2008

I think you misunderstood me. I didn't mean that Powers or Obama should have no role or responsibility for the events and the clean up. I meant to point out that Clinton with 35 years of experience in ______ could have engaged constructively by facilitating travel to the high road together with her adversary (he's her adversary on issues that are important to the American people, last I checked, not name calling by surrogates) or she could have exploited it (or let her surrogates exploit it). She chose to make the most of it. It's all a game. Do we have to play this game? No, we don't.

Again, you have confused my statement: I am not saying Powers is not responsible for her comment, she actually eloquently took responsibility (and noted, not insignificantly, that her public record praise and admiration for Clinton was abundant) and Obama removed her as an advisor from the campaign. So those things happened (I didn't say they did not). What always gets me is that Clinton has the opportunity to bring us all to a new politics, but she does not. She has the chance to stand up and say NO to Ferraro, but let's it fester and dominate the news as she excruciatingly slowly distances herself from it, before finally rejecting it. Why is that? Why doesn't Clinton repudiate Mark Penn's flagrant references to "cocaine" or Wolfson "Starr" comparison? Why let that kind of shameless political spectacle thrive out of control? You took umbrage at what you wrongly thought was my insistance that Clinton was responsible for the Powers incident, but that's not what I was intending. I was trying to point out that consistently she missed opportunities to raise the tenor of the campaign. From the tone of your comment I am fairly certain you will remain unconvinced.

Monique...as usual you always miss the point. Not only does Ms. Power's comment represent the thoughts of probably more than half the country, but it was never that serious. First of all, she's an unpaid aide. Second of all..how in the hell does that compare to Hillary HERSELF calling her FELLOW DEMOCRAT George Bush, Karl Rove, and Ken Starr?? How does that compare to saying a Republican is better than your FELLOW DEMOCRAT. It is important after all..to get a Democrat in the white house. How in the hell does that compare to all the lies, distortions, and cheapshots of the Clintons. Why is it ok for Clinton to shamelessly say women should vote for her because she's a woman. I honestly was once a Clinton supporter..but what they've been doing throughout this campaign is completely disgusting and intolerable...yet Clinton supporters insist on defending her no matter what. To all Clinton supporters..I have nothing personal against you..but please do your research. Obama supporters are tired of going on website after website..blog after blog..and hearing things like :

Obama is a muslim and blah blah...Hillary 08!!
OR
Obama doesnt take a stand he votes present all the time..Hillary 08!! (Even though if you did your actual research of how the Illinois State Legislature works...you'd know there are republicans and democrats alike there who vote present all the time. Why? Because believe it or not..be ignorant if you will... experts say such a vote is a strategy, a way to force the majority party to negotiate or to protest parts of a bill). It seems weird to those who doesnt know how it works..but that's the FACTS!

OR
Obama's Health Care plan leaves 15 million people out..even though his plan does not...the only difference between his and Hillary's is that it doesn't have a mandate. Expert after expert has said everyone has access to his plan if they wish to purchase. But of course..leave it to the Clinton campaign to twist and spin
OR
Bringing up Tony Rezko..over..and over..and over..as if Norman Hsu doesnt exist. Or better yet..as if the fact that Hillary waffled about releasing her tax returns and finally supposedly said it'll be released next month(what will be the excuse then)..and as if Bill Clinton blocking hundreds of pages of archives for the donor list to his presidential library isn't reason for concern.

I think I speak for all Obama supporters..when we say we are tired. Tired of the old politics..tired of Hillary saying and doing whatever it takes to win an election..tired of Hillary supporters turning a blind eye to all that she has done for the past few weeks

Grow up. Politics isn't a picnic in the park. I think I speak for all realists when we say that we are tired of all this self-righteous indignation from the Obama camp every time the Clinton campaign finds some kind of opening, no matter how dubious, and then exploits it to her advantage for the next news cycle. And since you've obviously turned a blind eye to the below-the-belt shenanigans of Obama's over-zealous supporters, allow me to either remind or enlighten you that they spread horrible rumors about Elizabeth Edwards's cancer in S.C., mis-directed Edwards caucus voters to wrong locations in Iowa, AND imported voters from other states to vote in Nevada caucuses. Guess what? This shit happens. A Stanford basketball player had an erroneous foul called on him with 1 second left on the clock giving UCLA the chance to tie the game and go on to win it in overtime. Replays showed there was no foul. But. Home game. Sympathetic ref. UCLA wins. Happens all the time. Wake up to the game, the real game. And save your "new politics" for Planet Utopia.

Oh and more bad news: if Hillary wants to win she's gonna need that half to support her if she manages to steal the nomination. i'd long decided that I would vote for McCain over Hillary. He just seems more trustworthy. Her nastiness, her pettiness, willingness to win at all costs. I'm "relatively" young. I don't remember a nastier, more divisive democratic race. I believe that Hillary knows that if she gets the nomination some democrats won't support her and that she figures she has enough of a margin to win. She's depending on a 51% strategy. I won't sit home. If she gets the nomination I'm crossing the line and voting for McCain. He's a train wreck waiting to happen but he's simply a more honest, more worthy trainwreck. I'm a firm believer of anybody but Hillary.

If Hillary gets the nomination, don't vote for McCain. Write in "Obama" instead. It might ultimately have the same effect. But it would at least be symbolically more significant. Then again, it might be even more important than that...

I totally understand but I think threatening to vote for McCain is silly. Promising to withhold your support--like not voting or voting for all other Dems except her-- makes sense. Why withhold your vote from HRC when McCain is even more grotesque?

I have asked myself the same question (before I got REALLY angry after that fear-mongering commercial), and I had concluded that perhaps 4 years of McCain would be better than 8 more years of Clintons.

If the Clintons get the nomination, it means that their corporate thugs of the DLC have triumphed and (again) there is no chance for a candidate who earned his or her support from the bottom up. They got rid of the Iraq-vet candidate from Ohio without even having a primary, and they have been trying for a long time to marginalize Howard Dean and the DNC. The temptation is to just drop out of politics. I worked hard to get the senatorial Democrats elected in '06, and look what happened there..."meeting were held" at which time it was decided to risk the support of progressives in order to court the favor of the Independents and the Republicans. Part of this strategy was to have just enough Democrats voting for all of Bush's requests for stuff to keep the Iraq war going, just enough to be sure that the bills passed. Why? I asked the chief aide of a congressman and I was told it was part of the strategy to get more Democrats into congress.

How like the Clintons and their corporate supporters to try to prove once and for all that Nader was right....the parties ARE exactly alike , at least they will be IF we go along with Hill and Bill and the DLC. Too bad that the lazy dimwits who support the Clintons can't see how mercilessly they are being used. They keep coming on Hufpost and touting her healthcare plan as though she doesn't accept more money from big healtcare corporations than any other candidate, including Republicans. It is though they NEVER learn. HC NEVER intended to give us a healthcare plan that worked. She hired her cronies and they deliberated in secret (and she still refuses to release the records of the deliberations). . And when her plan (such as it was...being calculated to fail so badly that even Democrats refused to support it) was being lied about by these same corporations, she failed to fight back. And now she takes big money from the same people who killed her plan. And her supporters are too dim to see the big picture....the picture that says that if elected, as soon as the votes are counted, HC will be dropping the little people and going back to Aspen with her corporate pals.

Translation: Poor loser?

Let the race continue, and let's behave as grown-ups. No one has stolen anything -- as far as we know.

Neither candidate has yet reached -- or can reach -- the magic number of 2025.

So, we all must let the process continue. Super-Delegates will probably play a role, and there are written rules as to how that process should continue.

Hopefully -- no matter how emotionally involved we may be -- when the moment arrives where we must act, we will act responsibly, exhibiting maturation, intelligence, and party loyalty.

Whether or not my first pick for the democratic nominee wins or loses, I do not think I will be charging anyone with having stolen anything. I may be mad as hell at the press for how they have behaved, and how they have unfairly influenced this race, but hopefully, despite my anger, I will not be a sore loser. And hopefully, my head will prevail, and I will not vote for someone who stands for all the things I have stood against my whole life. Hopefully, my intellect will prevail, and I will not stoop to vote for a Republican and do harm to my nation, its Supreme Court, and the rights of the citizenry.

What bothers me about Hillary is that she's not authentic or balanced in her gender identity. When a woman breaks the glass ceiling I would want her to be a REAL woman ... not a man in a pants suit. We are born male or female but masculinity and femininity is something we must develop ... it is not automatic .... it's not a given. And that is what bothers me about Hillary. She has a highly developed masculine aspect but I just don't see the feminine in her. So ya, you could have a woMAN in the White House ... big deal ... what's changed? Nothing. An authentic feminine leader could have men and nations falling at her feet ... A woMAN leader is nothing more than a second rate male ... and why settle for a second rate male when you can have a male ... not that he's any better if he's not developed his masculine aspect (understands the correct use of power, amongst other things). But when you're looking to break the gender glass ceiling, the woman must be a true woman, an authentic feminine, one who has developed her feminine aspect (for only then can she be balanced) and one who governs from her feminine aspect in harmony with the masculine. Hillary, take the next 8 years to figure this out and then try again.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:54 PM on 03/09/2008

I'm a woman who is proud of her femininity. I resent women who want to force me to be a man. I particularly resent women feminists who have accomplished NOTHING for women except for the right to vote and the right to wear a pantsuit and be a man. What about women who decide to be mothers? What has the feminist movement done for them? Work protections, guaranteed health care, prenatal screenings? What about working mothers ( thanks to Bill and Reagan for that) who have NO CHOICE but to leave their children at a daycare center ( mass herding) ? Help with daycare? Protections at work so they can be home at night? Nada! While some militant feminists got their Phd's and became CEO's so they could oppress other women instead of helping them, mothers were forced into economic slavery, which also resulted in many abortions ( with lasting psychological damage afterwards). All these things are conveniently ignored by the vagina monologue militants.

I saw how true feminism can produce awesome results in Germany. Cabinet level ministry for women's affairs and family. Workplace protection for pregnant women, guaranteed healthcare for the pregnant and the newborn, retirement credit for years of motherhood, the list goes ON AND ON! Now you tell me, I have to support a militant male-wannabe who has done NOTHING for women in all of her 35 years but exploit legitimate grievances of women to advance HER hunger for power?

The above author is correct: a strong woman is in touch with her femininity. Wisdom ( Sophia) is the ancient symbol for WOMANHOOD. Woman is more than just a man in a dress: woman is wisdom, love, clarity, compassion and so much more.

Woman is NOT a man, and a woman who is out to prove to the world that she is more of a man, is as dangerous as Bush who was out to prove to the world that he is tougher than his dad! As reference, I'd like to add that there are currently two fabulous women in high offices: Germany's Angela Merkel and New Zealand's Helen Clark. Strong women who are great diplomats, great rolemodels for women and who show great wisdom and compassion in their leadership. If you want a woman in high office, please don't look for a woman who acts like the worst male abuser. Look for a woman who represents womanhood in the most positive ways.

We already experienced what it is like to have a psychologically ill president; I hope we don't have to experience another one.

Someone who doesn't know themselves can be more easily manipulated.

I agree Jon Robin Baitz: the brilliant Samantha Power is lost for NOW. I was very happy and impressed that BHO could attract the calibre of Ms. Power. I am confident she'll be back once he is in office.
And an aside: I don't think they should have a revote in either FL or MI. The citizens of these two states knew what was happening and did what? I suggest they direct their frustrations at their own State admin for putting them into this position. The DNC should stand firm. If they really want another revote then the citizens of these two states should stand together and demand their states pay for it, it was their own fault and therefore their own responsibility.
Personally, I think they should split the delegates in half and be done with it. It appears that rules and pledges are only a convenience to HRC. Look to how HRC behaves, that will be an insight into how she would steward (her word) her administration. The inhouse bickering, the devisive campaign strategy are all good indicators of the type of Presidency she would field.

Samantha's disdain for the people of Ohio is a lot more relevant to voters than her snippy attitude about Hillary. Frankly, who cares that she looks at Hillary and says, *ewwwww*. She's obviously got a real streak of sexism going. Hillary looks just dandy as she is.

But the attitude about voters?

That's what voters should be noticing.

The elitism just oozed. It just oozed out.

I suppose it's OK. But I fail to see how anyone will win a general election with AA voters and the latte crowd.

The message to the core Democratic party who doesn't fit into the Obama idea of "cool voters" is: We don't care what you think.
