Alaskan Independence Party: The Last Refuge of a Scoundrel

In 2004, America's malleable mainstream media allowed itself to be manipulated by artful Republican operatives into devoting weeks of broadcast attention and drums of ink to unfairly desecrating John Kerry's genuine Vietnam heroics while obligingly muzzling serious discussion of George W. Bush's shameful wartime record of evasion and cowardice.

Last week found the American media once again boarding Republican swift boats against this season's Democratic candidate armed with unfair and hypocritical attacks artfully designed by GOP strategists to distract attention from the cataclysmic outcomes of Republican governance. Vice Presidential hopeful Sarah Palin has taken to faulting Senator Barack Obama for his casual acquaintance with a respected Illinois educator Bill Ayers, who forty years ago was a member of the Weathermen, a movement active when Obama was eight and which he has denounced as "detestable." Palin argues that the relationship proves that Obama sees "America as being so imperfect that he is palling around with terrorists who would target their own country."

The Times dedicated a page one article to Obama's relations with Ayers and CNN's Anderson Cooper obliged Palin by rewarding her reckless accusations about Obama's patriotism with a major investigative report. Fox, meanwhile, is still riveting its audience with wall to wall coverage of this pressing irrelevancy.

But if McCarthy-era guilt-by-association is once again a valid political consideration, Palin, it would seem, has more to lose than Obama. Palin, it could be argued, following her own logic, thinks so little of America's perfection that she continues to "pal around" with a man--her husband, actually--who only recently terminated his seven-year membership in the Alaskan Independence Party. Putting plunder above patriotism, the members of this treasonous cabal aim to break our country into pieces and walk away with Alaska's rich federal oil fields and one-fifth of America's land base--an area three-fourths the size of the Civil War Confederacy.

AIP's charter commits the party "to the ultimate independence of Alaska," from the United States which it refers to as "the colonial bureaucracy in Washington." It proclaims Alaska's 1959 induction as a state "as illegal and in violation of the United Nations charter and international law."

AIP's creation was inspired by the rabidly violent anti-Americanism of its founding father Joe Vogler, "I'm an Alaskan, not an American," reads a favorite Vogler quote on AIP's current website, "I've got no use for America or her damned institutions." According to Vogler AIP's central purpose was to drive Alaska's secession from the United States. Alaska, says current Chairwoman Lynette Clark, "should be an independent nation."

Vogler was murdered in 1993 during an illegal sale of plastic explosives that went bad. The prior year, he had renounced his allegiance to the United States explaining that, "The fires of hell are frozen glaciers compared to my hatred for the American government." He cursed the stars and stripes, promising, "I won't be buried under their damned flag...when Alaska is an independent nation they can bring my bones home." Palin has never denounced Vogler or his detestable anti-Americanism.

Palin's husband Todd remained an AIP party member from 1995 to 2002. Sarah can be described in McCarthy-era palaver as a "fellow traveler." While retaining her Republican registration, she attended the AIP's 1994 convention where the party called for a draft constitution to secede from the United States and create an independent nation of Alaska. The McCain Campaign has reluctantly acknowledged that she also attended AIP's 2000 Convention. She apparently found the experience so inspiring that she agreed to give a keynote address at the AIP's 2006 convention and she recorded a video greeting for this year's 2008 convention. In other words, this is not something that happened when she was eight!

So when Palin accuses Barack of "not seeing the same America as you and me," maybe she is referring to an America without Alaska. In any case, isn't it time the media start giving equal time to Palin's buddy list of anti-American bombers and other radical associates?

In the (18th) Century the United States Constitution was written to “Form A More Perfect Union”, well it lasted until the (21st) Century and the formation of the (USMIC) United States Military Industrial Complex. Now, it’s really has come time to re-think the entire formation of that government, it is time for a “NO FAULT DIVORCE” of the Pacific Rim Republics from the United States of America. We are not a united country and the peoples of the East Coast and West Coast are not politically, socially, or economically alike, it is time for a real change.

It is insane to think that in the (21st) Century that the Pacific Rim Republics can not create a new (21st) Century, with the “Magna Carte” and the United States Constitution as building blocks. The (USMIC) simply is no longer working for the Pacific Rim Republics. A new compact can be achieved.
1.A Parliamentary Government of (3) Parties
2.Term Limits in office
3.Mandatory retirement ages for office holders
4.A Recall of office holders system
5.Impeachment votes must be held if requested by a set number of representative demands it and can not be set to a committee.
6.What is signed into law can not have Presidential Statement Over-rides.
7.A system will be established to set up total voting districts, by the Parliament and not by a party in the Parliament.
8.Referendums will be placed on ballets to be voted upon in each Republic and the Government.
9.Socialized Medicine System

10.Aggressive oversight of the banking system, and market systems, with long term prison for white collar crimes.
11.The ending of (NAFTA) The North Atlantic Free Trade Association
12. The aggressive security of the Pacific Federations Boarders and immigration.
13.No Golden Parachutes for executive, and a cap on their wages based upon the pay of the lowest employee in the company, the top executive but be limited to a percentage bases of the lowest paid executive.

In the (21st) its time to re-think, the (18th) Century corrupted (21st) Century Military Industrial Complex, and yes the Republics of the Pacific Rim need to Secede from the present Government.

All of your thirteen points can be legally adopted here in the USA without balkanizing the nation. If you get your wish I can imagine the return of the Confederacy, perhaps with a reprise of the "peculiar institution" that led to the Civil War.....

If my country was part of the USA, I would be fighting for independence too.

People are better off ruling themselves rather than being ruled from thousands of miles away by people who don't care about them and who's loyalties are to the bankers, corporations and extremely wealthy who put them into office.

Smaller countries have less corruption as politician's have to live among the people they are serving and it is easier to hold them accountable.

I believe it is important for the media to inform the public about Palins affiliation with the AIP, especially since McCain/Palin have been showing a dangerous lack of faith in the American government and its people. They are basically saying Obama pulled "a fast one" on not only the FBI, CIA, Home Land Security and the system that checks on the background of presidental canidates, but they are insinuating that american voters were also blindly bamboozeled and elected a "terrorist friendly" canidate to run against them. They also feel that the judgement rendered against Palin for abuse of power is baseless and that that part of the legislative system doesn't know what it is talking about either, so it too must be corrupt and untrustworthy. AIP and Palin are more relevant to this election than Ayers and Obama.

I AGREE WITH YOU WHOLE HEARTEDLY. It amazes me that the only two shows that discuss Palin and her husband are Olberman and Rachel Maddow. The rest just gloss over it so they have more to discuss at a later date...or as usual....just give McCain a "pass".

Having lived in Alaska since I was ten I have read and watched the AIP pop up every so often. Vogler was always treated as slightly crazy, "living in the boonies with no trespassing signs all over his yard" type of guy. Most people considered him harmless until we heard about the explosives thing.
I honestly think that Sarah had no idea what she was getting into when she entered the national arena of "the good ole boys network" that she tried so hard to distance herself from in Alaska(Senator Frank Murkowski).
This article is accurate and I find it disheartening how she has lowered herself to become a mouthpiece for the GOP in her eagerness to gain power. I keep remembering that tv shot of her sitting in the Governors chair and asking what does a vice president really do?

You summed it up perfectly happyblubird... Sarah has NO idea what she got herself into,and this is one of the MANY reasons she is dangerously unqualified to be in the White House. I love Olberman and Maddow for making my voice heard on issues that others won't touch.

Robert, I admire your voice in these murky times saying what needs to be said. You don’t need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows. The Media Manipulation Machine is a tool of Fascist Propaganda that brings into play anything that is useful. If you get poor people to vote, own homes, feel connected and less than hopeless – you’re a Demon. For these things empower and strip away the dictates of the despot. We must fight corporate influence of our elections and thought processes. The Weathermen were students that blew up government buildings and banks which they made every effort to insure were vacant. William Ayers then believed that peaceful protest had become ineffectual and felt powerless to effect change politically. it seems that the republicans have dropped the "guilt by association" attack - according to Politico tomorrow they will be emailing a 90 second ad against obama that goes through ayers' acts and ends with "guilt by participation"
i think this one is really over the top. its on Politico if anyone wants to see it.

Palin asked that the MSM ask Obama the "hard questions" about Ayers - which they have and he has answered - but what about asking her the 'hard questions' about AIP and Troopergate and the per diem she charged to Alaska when she was at home, etc. etc.

No one has asked Palin hard questions because she 'dropped-out' of the media before they were finished asked the 'easy questions' - which she couldn't answer anyway.

She is getting such a pass from the media!

McCain has said she would not be available to talk to the media. In an election, don't you think all of them should be in front of the media, but when she does talk, McCain is there with her answersing all the questions. This is a serious problem and I FOR ONE DO NOT WANT THIS WOMAN AYWHERE NEAR THE WHITEHOUSE OR EVEN IN THAT STATE.

This connection to the AIP is so much more credible and disturbing than Obama's working with Ayers. Can you imagine the Annenberg Foundation appointing Joe Vogler to anything? How about Todd Palin? It such a classic Rove tactic to ask "who is Barrack Obama?" when the real question is: Who are the Palins's and how connected to a n t i-American militias, white s u p r e m i c i st secessionists and theocratic survivalist fringe groups are they?
