Want to See How the Kochs Are Ending Public Education?

Posted: 08/15/11 03:53 PM ET

The Koch brothers have more than $42 billion to make public policy out of their anti-government ideology, and their assault against public education epitomizes their tactics to remake our nation.

The Koch brothers founded Americans for Prosperity and have contributed more than $5 million to its political coffers. Americans for Prosperity, in turn, contributed to organizations that financially influenced a community school board election.

That's right: the Koch brothers are involving themselves, through their wealth-backed political apparatus, in local schools.

Americans for Prosperity allied with groups in North Carolina with the sole purpose of building a new majority on the school board in and around Raleigh. The Koch apparatus was trying to rewrite the social contract that made the Wake County school system a magnet for teachers and families and the surrounding communities prosper.

Each campus was its own melting pot where students could build meaningful relationships and find their niche. Advanced courses and after school activities gave tens of thousands of children a path to higher education and a shot at success.

Many families in the community attributed local prosperity and harmony to the way the school district assigned students to schools.

That policy came under siege from the Koch brothers who, through Americans for Prosperity, indirectly supported school board candidates who campaigned on reversing the busing for diversity program. The outside involvement made a school board election into the most divisive race since the 1970s.

The Koch brothers and outside influence provided the script for the Koch-supported candidates. They campaigned to end "forced busing" and promise to enact a "neighborhood schools" mandate.

Do those phrases ring a bell? Using the same language Gov. George Wallace used in the 60s, Koch-supported candidates in North Carolina are pushing to make public policy based on Wallace's "segregation always" pledge. And they had the Koch brothers and Americans for Prosperity's full support.

This is a new example of the Koch brothers' so-called extreme free market ideology. It's an incredible window into the brothers' disdain for public service and government protection in general.

Secondary school is a distant memory for the brothers Koch, both in their 70s and both graduates of nonpublic schools (David went to a Northeast boarding school, and Charles to military school). While Charles kicks back in his fenced off Kansas estate and David sips chardonnay and reflects on ballet in New York City, teenagers Moses and Robert Wright are in jeopardy of being shut out from the advanced high school classes they need for college admission.

The teenagers attend college preparatory classes through the district diversity program. The Koch brothers' influence at such a local level concerns Gerold Wright, the boys' father.

"We want to make sure we can get the best education public money can buy," he says in the video. "It worries me. We had a game plan and we did not think we would have to change."

Quinton White was one of the first students to be relocated without a say in the matter. He said his relationships with former mentors, teachers and students have suffered.

"I feel it was a sneaky move [and] I'm just disconnected right now," he said. "The decision... has made it difficult for students like me to adjust and grow."

They are living proof that the Koch brothers are causing students to lose their opportunity for a free and fair shot at academic achievement and future success.

All politics is local, but it's extremely jarring to meet families and children who've been compromised by the Koch brothers' ideology. It's as simple what Gerold Wright says.

"What they're trying to do is dismantle the whole public school system," he said.

I hope you'll watch this video and share it with your friends and family.

I also invite you to participate in our conversation on Facebook.

If people were readng, thinking and tried to understand things rather than relying on TV advertising, billionaires spending to push their own agenda would not be efficient... We get what we deserve by having a large part of the population who just don't want to think.

Busing wouldn't even BE an issue if SEGREGATION didn't keep people apart in the FIRST place ! ! !
(Since Blacks only make up 12% of the US population, why do they make up the MAJORITY of the POVERTY STRICKEN INNER CITIES???) Civil rights legislation in the 60's sought to end segregation, but it STILL exists. Google "red-lining" and "racial steering." DEMOGRAPHICS determines one's place on the SOCIOECONOMIC ladder.

"When whites relocated to the suburbs, their strong tax base and businesses followed. The result: a huge discrepancy in the quality and quantity of resources, jobs and public services in central cities and inner-ring suburbs inhabited by mostly minority populations. As white communities continue the trend of isolating themselves and their resources, the pattern of flight and divestment repeats, and the wealth gap grows larger. "

wow. what is so amazing is to think of the kind of life these uber-wealthy children of a very successful businessman has been like.... did they go to private schools? were they given any car they liked for their 16th birthdays? did they have free rides to Harvard without the question of money even entering anyone's discussion? what doors were not only open for them but were literally clamoring for their attention, these wealthy people?

What can they possibly know of a regular life? Where your mom doesn't have enough change for a school lunch? where you might walk to school past bad parts of town? where you have "economic uncertainty" not because a business isn't certain if the extra 3% might be enacted in tax law but because mom got laid off and they MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO PAY THE RENT unless she finds a new job pronto.

They want to blame a kid in that boat for being there--and pretend like the invisible hand of free markets is somehow going to pluck worthy kids from this scenario and reward them if they are talented enough.

these people lack basic understanding of the real world.

The Kochs have no right to get involved with this.... It is none of their business.. I hope smart minds see through their hate campaign..!

thank you koch brothers! no child should be forced to go to a school that is failing, when they started telling parents in cleveland in the 70s that they had to bus there kids to all black schools, 400,000 people moved out of cleveland to the suburbs, and took there money with them, and left cleveland to become a hell hole. if i move to a nice area and a nice school then they tell me i cant send my kid to that school, i have to bus her across town to the worst area in the city, i am moving immediatley. which is what 400,000 people agreed with me on cause they moved.

Well, Danny you are exactly the reason why the old Democratic Party is dead. Lyndon Johnson, as he signed the Civil Rights Act of 1965 said, "With this I have cost my party the South for a generation."
He was quite wrong of course. He cost his party not only the South but suburbia as well. And not just for a generation, but forever.

i was a victim of busing, we moved across the street from a good school then we were told i lived to close, i had to go around the corner to catch a bus to one of the worse schools in cleveland. my mother couldnt afford to move again so i went to bad schools for the rest of my school years. the racism from blacks against whites was horrible they would wait for us to get off the bus and beat the hell out of us on a daily basis. it made me tough , but it also made me realize that i would never put my daughters through that

Two irrelevant filmmakers are not killing public education. Public education is killing public education. Get the lawyers out of the schools. Get the politicians out of the schools. Offer alternatives to college prep (not everyone can, should, or even wants to go to college). Bring back vocational training so that kids have the chance to get a good job right out of high school without having to go to college and get in debt. Stop cutting physical education, art, & music. Abolish NCLB and stop teaching strictly to the test. Hold parents & guardians accountable for their child's education. The entire system needs to be scrapped and re-written. It is not an easy task, but no worthwhile effort ever is.

You obviously are in the Koch Brother's back pocket! Did you even read the article or watch the film? The school district is one of the BEST school systems in the whole United States. What are you jabbering about? Segregation? That is at the bottom of your rant.

In Nevada - the Koch brothers and friendly billionaires - established a "NON-PROFIT" think tank called NPRI (Nevada Policy Research Institute). They generate templated reports (written somewhere else with Nevada submitted) and used information - whether it was accurate or not to try to influence during this last legislative session. They really hate public education.

After some investigation, I noticed there is a nationwide think tank network. Quite noticeably, in Nevada, NPRI lobbied in spite of it's tax exempt charity status. Pretty bold.

What happened in Wisconsin is quickly being established throughout this nation. . . and the insidous non-profit think tank is spreading like a virus to kill public schools.

This is why the christian right is so unpalatable to minorities and the poor. Two guys who had the best education money could buy just can't understand why everyone doesn't just pay their own way.It looks good from where they sit. This is phycopathic lack of empathy that so permeates the right wing zealots in your country.

Everything the Koch brothers make has competition from other American made products. They are not involved in high tech or automotive products but instead make things like toilet paper and paper towels.

As the US spends more per student than evey nation, except Switzerland, its obvious we aren't getting our money's worth.
11:53 PM on 08/15/2011
As the Koch brothers net worth is about $36 billion, the $42 billion seem a bit much.
11:20 PM on 08/15/2011
I'm a little confused by the "neighborhood schools mandate" because the Koch brothers are behind a lot of charter school expansion. Privately-managed, deregulated charter schools are draining resources from the traditional neighborhood schools and leaving them full of the most disadvantaged students. This is how the market competition advocated by the Kochs, Gates, Waltons, Broads, etc. is destroying public education.

And you prople were wondering how and where the rich spend their dough. Well, when you have 42 billion, if you spend a billion a year, providing no other income comes in, the math says it would take 42 years to spend it. Pretty neat huh? Especially when you pay hardly any taxes on it. so, what you would do with it pretty much depends on the state of mind. They found something to do with it. The question now is what will you, out there will do about it.

When you have $42 billion and have friends who manage complex, computer generated trading programs that benefit the wealthy, then you earn 8-10% on your $42 billion, spend $1 billion, and have $45 billion left. At that rate the Koch brothers will never run out of money, even when they have made the planet uninhabitable for the rest of us.
