Sarah, Plain and Small

What's Your Reaction:

It never ceases to bemuse me when I see people raving about Sarah Palin as their beloved choice for President of the United States. Mayor! Governor! Maverick! It is a response that speaks volumes, not about Ms. Palin, but about her disciples. And what it speaks is not flattering.

Anyone who supports Sarah Palin for President of the United States is blindly and shamelessly willing to overlook reality. It isn't that Sarah Palin is not remotely qualified by any conception of the human thought process to be president (she's not), it's that she has no place even at the table for discussion.

While I hear woeful cries of vitriol, let me explain. It's pretty basic -- and clear-cut. Here is the starting point of her experience:

1) When Sarah Palin was elected mayor of Wasilla for the first time, she got 616 votes.

2) Sarah Palin served half a term as governor, and then quit.

3) To support her foreign policy credentials, she said, quote, "You can actually see Russia from land here."

And that's just for starters. The list describing how egregiously unqualified she is to be president is extensive. For instance, just consider for a moment that -

Wait a second, no. Don't consider anything else. Stop right there. To consider anything else gives credence that she should be considered. And that unacceptably overlooks those first three points. These three cut you off at the entrance gate. Think of it like trying to get on a ride at a carnival where there's a sign, "Must be tall enough to reach this bar in order to be permitted on rollercoaster."

You have to reach the bar, just to get on.

We are talking about being President of the United States. Commander in Chief of the American Armed Forces. Leader of the Free World. Most power person in the world. And what are Sarah Palin's qualifications?

1) When Sarah Palin was elected mayor of Wasilla for the first time, she got 616 votes.

2) Sarah Palin served half a term as governor, and then quit.

3) To support her foreign policy credentials, she said, quote, "You can actually see Russian from land here."

That can't be said enough. And it can't be said loud enough. Those are the core foundation of Sarah Palin's political experience -- whatever she decides to run for.

You can't get past that. It's reality.

No matter how much one lauds her qualifications for being "a mayor" -- she got 616 votes when she first was elected. You'd get that many votes if you ran for the board of the Rotary Club. And you'd probably end up with more experience.

No matter how much one lauds Sarah Palin's qualifications for being a governor, she only made it to the half-way point. How dismal is this? Name the last governor you know of -- ever -- who quit. At any time. Out of the blue, unprompted. Other than being appointed to a higher job...or indicted. Just quit. One can put whatever desperate, phony spin one wants to on it, but Sarah Palin quit the job swore she would uphold. Yet forget how gallingly irresponsible it is -- the point we're talking about is experience. Sarah Palin has only a half term's experience as governor.

No matter how much one lauds Sarah Palin's qualifications for foreign pol... well, okay, the best even she herself could come up with when asked on ABC was that Alaska was neighbors with Russia, and you could see it from land there. It was the best she could come up with because she has zero foreign policy experience. Zippo. None. Nada. It's hard to suggest that you should be the most powerful person in the world, when your world is the size of a soap box.

It can't be said enough:

1) When Sarah Palin was elected mayor of Wasilla for the first time, she got 616 votes.

2) Sarah Palin served half a term as governor, and then quit.

3) To support her foreign policy credentials, she said, quote, "You can actually see Russia from land here."

Yes, yes, her most ardent, wide-eyed acolytes like to ignore her woeful lacking and instead shout that they "like what she stands for." I would suggest that few of these folks could even begin to tell you what she stands for. At best, you might get soporific platitudes - "She's for conservative values. She's supports the Real America. She's mavericky. She's loves God."

Swell. Except I mean, they can't say what she actually stands for. How would she end the Iraq War? What would she do about Afghanistan? How would she resolve the economic crisis and housing crash? What would she propose as a health care plan? How would she deal with education, the environment, Gitmo, free trade. What's her policy on Israel? Venezuela? The European Union? Russia? Should Levy be invited for Thanksgiving?

By the way, this was a trick question. Her supporters can't explain what she stands for because Sarah Palin doesn't stand for anything. Other than Sarah Palin.

Hey, y'know, I like what my friend Charlie Bondurant stands for. But I wouldn't vote for him to be president. Because he has nothing. And neither does Sarah Palin. As Gertrude Stein described the bleak, emptiness of Oakland, there's no "there" there. Just a void.

1) When Sarah Palin was elected mayor of Wasilla for the first time, she got 616 votes.

2) Sarah Palin served half a term as governor, and then quit.

3) To support her foreign policy credentials, she said, quote, "You can actually see Russia from land here."

That's Sarah Palin.

And it is meaningless to even address her other failures - or anything else about her - because it only serves to distract from this real issue. There is no reason to go further. That's what Sarah Palin's experience is, and what her credentials are. That's where all discussion must begin. And most importantly, end.

If you can't get past the entrance exam, nothing else matters.

People forget that Sarah Palin is married to a man who was (is?) a member of an Alaska Successionist party. As governor, she taped a welcome to the Successionist party when they convened. This indicates to me that she and her husband have NO loyalty to the United States of America. They are loyal ALASKANS....who want to keep their oil, mineral and natural wealth to themselves.....and the hell with the rest of us.
To me, this is the number one reason (among MANY) why she is unqualified to run for ANY office in the U.S. federal government.

You CAN see Russia from land in Alaska. It's just not from a part of Alaska she's ever been to.

' It isn't that Sarah Palin is not remotely qualified by any conception of the human thought process to be president (she's not), it's that she has no place even at the table for discussion.'

the mainstream corporate/state-run media HAS decided that Palin has a place at the table, and they continue to promote her, covering her as if she actually were a viable candidate, qualified to be POTUS even though she thought africa was a country til somebody told her otherwise

and, of course, we all know that the political puppetmasters pulling the MSM's strings are the same ones who were pulling bush's strings and are now busily setting up their next puppet president

Here are the two things I've always pointed out to show that she has no hope of being president:

1. In her months of campaigning for the vice-presidency, she never learned what the vice-president actually does.

2. When asked about not meeting with Iran without preconditions (a central McCain position), she thought it meant meeting them without preparation.

If you're incapable of learning those two things in three months, you have no business running for president.
01:25 PM on 11/25/2009
She also pointed out repreatedly the uslessness of lame duck elected officials.
I didn't hear and lot of agreement (as in not even one) from other elected officials. Or from anyone, for that matter.

Point is do you want a POTUS who decides to blow off their job two years into a four year term?
Because she has already announded loud and clear by her acts and her words that that is her view of an elected official's responsibility, and that is what her attitude toward an elected position is.

And her acts show even more that that. Most of the half term she served she made very sure she was as far away from the capitol city of Alaska as she could be.
Detached from her job mentally and physically.

Nelson Rockefeller quit a year before the end of his fourth term without pressure or another office to run for, but that was a long, long time ago.

Chicago politics....

When is the last time you saw a governor be hit with so many frivolous ethics charges. The obvious strategy was to bankrupt her personally.

Let us be clear on the ethics violations. She, as Governor of Alaska, was responsible for writing the Ethics Act that she is accused of violating. Although she repeats that she was not found guilty, the Personnel Board found her guilty in the Troopergate filing and many of the filed accusations are not yet resolved.
01:11 PM on 11/25/2009
Let's also be clear on the timing... most of those charges were brought before she was even on the radar for VP. Also, most were brought by fellow Republicans. It's a poor defense, especially when you look at all the frivolous and insane charges that are flung at President Obama almost hourly. It was small potatoes in Alaska, and Sarah couldn't handle it. Fine, she decided she didn't want to deal with it and quit... in that respect it may have been a brave thing to do. But enough of this revisionist history crap, and enough with trying to elevate Sarah Palin to a position which she has not earned and does not belong.

I remember a President being investigated for a crooked land deal for three years, and all they could find was that he'd had SEX! *GASP!* witha a WOMAN!! *DOUBLE GASP!!*

Sarah's not going the presidential route, but by teasing the possibility it will keep her profile high. She has chosen fame and fortune over public service, that much is obvious. She's following in the heels of Rush and Glenn by going for craploads of money, the power to influence public policy and the adoration of idiots. And all this with ZERO responsibility. What could possibly be better??

I certainly hope you're right, but I also think that Palin is crazy enough to believe she could actually be POTUS. Scary stuff!

' Name the last governor you know of -- ever -- who quit. At any time. Out of the blue, unprompted.' ...

Name one? That'd be Repo man William Weld, native NYer & 'retired' governor of Massachusetts.

' Weld resigned the governorship after being nominated United States Ambassador to Mexico by President Bill Clinton. He was never confirmed by the United States Senate, however, and hence never served as Ambassador. This was due mainly to opposition from Senate Foreign Relations committee chairman Jesse Helms, who refused to hold a hearing on the nomination, effectively blocking it. Though both were Republicans and though that party held the majority in the chamber, Helms objected to Weld's moderate stance on several social issues. This refusal to hold hearings was also rumored to be at the request of former attorney general and friend of Helms, Ed Meese. Meese had a long standing grudge against Weld stemming from Weld's investigation of Meese during the Iran-Contra affair. ' ... (Wiki)

Then there was Weld's successor & fellow Repo man, Paul Cellucci, who quit to become Ambassador to Canada. It is no fun being governor of MA (OR AK), evidently, no fun at all.

Want to know how Palin fans will react to this?

Ya, but she doesn't use a teleprompter....or my favorite......Ya, well Obama said 57 states.

No joke. Haven't we all see those two about a million times?

That is the level of intellect were are dealing with folks. Her fans don't deal in reality and have zero understanding of the complexities of the world and what''s needed to be the Leader of the Free World. They are wearing T-shirts that say, Guns, God and Palin 2012. nuf said.
10:18 PM on 11/24/2009
This was a great piece, but I wonder why the media chases her around and hangs on her every word....as if she had ANY qualifications to be President of the United States. Why are they reporting on her daily facebook rants and giving her credibility? Why are they chasing her around asking her if she will run in 2012 rather than looking at her record, looking into the lies in her book, or focusing on someone else. I feel the media is building her up, yet most American's just want her to go away.
12:02 AM on 11/25/2009
Palin seems to be getting away with spouting lies after lies. No one calls her on it. No major media outlet or any big name politician. She just runs her mouth and continues to lie. Everytime her lips move, she lying.

10:15 PM on 11/24/2009
Thanks for this....well said. Yet, in the last few days, Palin hold Greta on Fox that she would like to run in 2012. Sheesh.

BTW, didn't they have to hire a city manager for Wasilla because Palin couldn't handle the responsiblilities of the job......of a tiny little town.

Also, the state that she governed....for half a term....before she quit......has a smaller population than a multitude of US cities, so so it hardly even qualifies as a state. It's was more like a mayor of a mid-sized city.
09:32 PM on 11/24/2009
Don't forget she chaired the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission in 2003 until she RESIGNED in 2004.
10:03 PM on 11/24/2009
She was totally unqualified for that job, which is actually supposed to be given
to someone with a degree in petroleum engineering or the equivalent. Her
appointment was a political bone thrown by then Gov. Murkowski because
Sarah thought she should get his senate seat instead of his daughter Lisa.

(If this sounds like a Simpsons episode, so be it).

Perfect Mr. Elisberg, thank you.
Sarah, the Bridge to No There There.
How fitting, how poetic a title for her sequel. "I said thanks but no thanks to the There."
The poor thing has a talent for askew poetry, would that she would shift gears and go deep into her inner self and come out a Beatnik with a quiet monotonous drum beat that wouldn't sting our ears or rev up her adrenalin.
Let the nonsensical phrases drip off her tongue and call it an abstraction and pay her to chant on the dark & smokey bar-room circuit. Three tables of heavy drinkers could keep her tip jar filling slowly, teasing her to stay another hour...betting there could be a better pay day. Ooops. Oh well, load up the station wagon, the next town will be better....
