Gun Violence Is Not Normal. Or Patriotic.

Posted: 07/20/2012 10:17 am

I'm sitting here in Denver, watching local coverage of yet another mass shooting by a gun nut, this time in a theatre during a midnight screening of the new Batman movie. At this time, 12 are reported dead, 50 wounded. The televised scenes at the theatre and the arrested shooter's apartment show police who are all heavily armed, all dressed in storm trooper black military uniforms. Only a few miles from the scene of the Columbine shootings in 1999, where 12 students and one teacher were killed, and 21 others wounded, this massacre has rocked Denver.

Just like after the Columbine shootings, the Arizona shooting where Gabby Giffords was critically shot, 8 others killed, and 9 wounded, the Virginia Tech massacre, and the Trayvon Martin shooting, there will be lots of bloviating by pundits on all sides of the gun argument. Politicos will be looking for any reason to advance their personal cause based on the personal circumstances/ideology/politics/mental state of the shooter, all trying to gain some perceived advantage over their political opponents. The fund-raising has already commenced.

My thoughts are beyond those partisan, and mostly irrelevant arguments. I'm focused on what's happened to the United States as a country. Gun massacres are becoming commonplace. We have jingoistic politicians who have idiotically accused a loyal American with a "funny name" of being some kind of sleeper agent for the Muslim Brotherhood. We stand helplessly by as these politicians, who have signed pledges to outside lobbying groups, hold the nation hostage over ideological hot-button issues on taxes, religious beliefs, and gun politics, all distorted into a weird tapestry of odd beliefs based on myths or outright falsehood. The NRA has been so effective at controlling politicians over gun rights that we, as a nation, cannot stop gun traffic across our own borders, causing the deaths of tens of thousands of people. At the same time, those very politicians who have stripped law enforcement of the tools they need to stop the tragic violence, hold the Attorney General of the United States in contempt of Congress for purely political theatre, all centered around a twisted interpretation of the second amendment. And fund-raising.

What the hell has happened to us? Are we this ignorant/negligent that we've allowed our country to be dominated by radicals who fight for political power by trying to scare us into a state of constant panic, creating a Darwinian society where we actually believe that we must arm ourselves against other armed people who have scared themselves to the point that they actually believe they need to murder perfect strangers? Every politician who has buckled to the NRA's checkbook should be ashamed of themselves. Better than that, they should all resign.

It's time for sane adults to insist that we elect sane adults who will act like sane adults and implement sane policy. There is no reason for us to be the most violent nation on earth (except for maybe Somalia), where gun violence is the norm. There is no reason for us to spend more on guns and the military than all other industrialized countries combined.

This will only happen, though, like every other societal shift, when it comes from the people: you and me ejecting every politician who pledges loyalty to lobbyists over the good of our society as a whole. Until we do this, the violence and insanity will only get worse.

Its sad what happened but I am not giving up my AK47. I like many Americans belong to the NRA and we give them money and vote for them which is why they are so effective. We wont give up our guns for this incident. My advice is look at the Hollywood movies that shows all this violence. That guy acted out the movie, maybe we should have a discussion on that.

Not giving up your AK47. Hopefully, you're just joking, but I fear not. Congratulations. You're the problem, not the solution.

An AK47 that doesn't do full automatic is legal.

Thank you Mr Cavnar. Somehow, to gun rights proponents, 38,000 non-military gun deaths a year are an acceptable price to pay for the 2nd amendment. Collateral damage, I suppose. And somehow, those 38,000 deaths are used in a twisted array of arguments to suggest that there aren't ENOUGH guns, that "if everyone had a gun..." I believe in the 2nd amendment, I've hunted, and I have no problem with gun ownership, but the vast numbers of handguns available here are a pox on our society. They were made with a sole purpose, to shoot other people, and they do way too often. Someday, I hope there will be a candidate strong enough to take on the NRA and their insane polcies.

Gun restricting laws do not prevent violence. Although I do not know the policy of that theater, most theaters in America post signs making carrying handguns on the property illegal, as is the case on school properties where a few mass shootings have occurred. Making it illegal only restricts law-abiding gun owners from carrying, not those who would attack innocents. No one was shot in the 2011 Monterrey casino arson, although 53 were killed. The 110 victims of the Gikondo massacre were unarmed & yet they were killed by clubs & machetes. So by all means, let's outlaw firearms. In jurisdictions where gun restricting laws have been relaxed over the last 25 years, violent crime has decreased. Between 630,000 & 2.5 million legal defensive uses of firearms occur every year. That's vastly more innocent lives saved than the somewhat inflated 38,000 figure which includes police shootings, accidents & suicides. The gun homicide rate is around 6,000. A handgun is the most effective & practical tool my elderly mother can have to have any chance of defending herself against younger, healthier & maybe even more numerous attackers. The world is comprised of sane people & nuts. Reactionary laws to killings like this do nothing more than make pundits feel better. To the extent that such legislation actually fails to protect innocents by giving lawmakers & their supporters a false sense of security, they are culpable in part to those who would come to harm because of it.

Thanks for summarizing the problem so succinctly, by using false comparisons and other tragic incidents to justify the myth that you need automatic weapons as your God given rights. How many weapons are enough? Need a bazooka? RPG? How about a nuke? Using your logic, all these are not only acceptable, they're expected.

Really? You're justifying gun ownership based on a country without a stable centralized government? Do you really believe that your elderly mother would access her gun before anyone breaking in could shoot her? Gun ownership is myth making at its finest. Knowing how to fire a weapon has not been a social asset for decades. Guns provide a false sense of security. Most people are not out to get you and your mother is alive today not because of the gun in the house but despite the gun. The gun laws need to be severely revamped. Your need for an AK-47 is 0. I don't know what you define as a legal defense but telling the guy selling magazines door to door to buzz off doesn't qualify.
