Four Reasons Why Romney Might Still Win

Posted: 09/20/2012 8:44 am

Can Romney possibly recover? A survey conducted between Sept. 12 and Sept. 16 by the Pew Research Center -- before the "47 percent victim" video came to light -- showed Obama ahead of Romney 51 percent to 43 percent among likely voters.

That's the biggest margin in the September survey prior to a presidential election since Bill Clinton led Bob Dole, 50 percent to 38 percent in 1996.

And, remember, this recent poll was done before America watched Romney belittle almost half the nation.

For the last several days I've been deluged with calls from my inside-the-beltway friends telling me "Romney's dead."

Hold it. Rumors of Romney's demise are premature for at least four reasons:

1. Between now and Election Day come two jobs reports from the Bureau of Labor Statistics - October 5 and November 2. If they're as bad as the last report, showing only 96,000 jobs added in August (125,000 are needed just to keep up with population growth) and the lowest percentage of employed adults since 1981, Romney's claim the economy is off track becomes more credible, and Obama's that it's on the mend harder to defend.

With gas prices rising, corporate profits shrinking, most of Europe in recession, Japan still a basket case, and the Chinese economy slowing, the upcoming job reports are unlikely to be stellar.

2. Also between now and Election Day are three presidential debates, starting October 3. It's commonly thought Obama will win them handily but that expectation may be very wrong - and could work against him. Yes, Romney is an automaton -- but when the dials are set properly he can give a good imitation of a human engaged in sharp debate. He did well in the Republican primary debates.

Obama, by contrast, can come off slow and ponderous. Recall how he stuttered and stumbled during the 2008 Democratic primary debates. And he hasn't been in a real-live debate for four years; Romney recently emerged from almost a year of them.

3. During the next 7 final weeks of the campaign, the anti-Obama forces will be spending a gigantic amount of money. Not just the Romney campaign and Romney's super PACs, but other super PACs aligned with Romney, billionaires spending their own fortunes, and non-profit "social welfare" organizations like the Chamber of Commerce, Karl Rove's "Crossroads," and various Koch-brothers political fronts - all will dump hundreds of millions on TV and radio spots, much of it spreading lies and distortions. Some of this money will be devoted to get-out-the-vote drives -- to phone banks and door-to-door canvassing to identify favorable voters, and vans to bring them to the polling stations.

It's an easy bet they'll far outspend Obama and his allies. I've heard two-to-one. The race is still close enough that a comparative handful of voters in swing states can make the difference -- which means gobs of money used to motivate voters to polling stations can be critical.

4. As they've displayed before, the Republican Party will do whatever it can to win -- even if it means disenfranchising certain voters. To date, 11 states have enacted voter identification laws, all designed by Republican legislatures and governors to dampen Democratic turnout.

The GOP is also encouraging what can only be termed "voter vigilante" groups to "monitor polling stations to prevent fraud" -- which means intimidating minorities who have every right to vote. We can't know at this point how successful these efforts may be but it's a dangerous wildcard. And what about those Diebold voting machines?

So don't for a moment believe "Romney's dead," and don't be complacent. The hard work lies ahead, in the next seven weeks.

And even if Obama is reelected, more hard work begins after Inauguration Day -- when we must push him to be tougher on the Republicans than he was in his first term, and do what the nation needs.

ROBERT B. REICH, Chancellor's Professor of Public Policy at the University of California at Berkeley, was Secretary of Labor in the Clinton administration. Time Magazine named him one of the ten most effective cabinet secretaries of the last century. He has written thirteen books, including the best sellers "Aftershock" and "The Work of Nations." His latest is an e-book, "Beyond Outrage," now available in paperback. He is also a founding editor of the American Prospect magazine and chairman of Common Cause.

Really- "hard work" cannot ever transcend what we all know about Romney. I agree everyone has to get out and vote and not be complacent, but he is dead- even if he somehow wins, he's dead.

If he wins Ohio it will be due to his investment in shares of DIEBOLD,,,,,The only way he can win is to steal as he had 3000 in attendance at his rally and Obama had 14,000 people....

Romney owns preferred stock in Diebold, which is the company who makes electronic voting machines, according to Executive Branch Personnel PUBLIC FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE REPORT. If this election is to be a fair and just account of who the people choose as their President, then all states must immediately use paper ballots like Oregon uses and they'd better do it fast! Otherwise, it appears to the people, with all his other non-disclosure, he could win it by rigging it.

Um, since when is requiring voter registration disenfranchising people? Sorry, Obama lost me. He made the bad economy worse, he is weak defending free speech to Muslims. Sorry, I need a change. Before we go off the deep end in debt.

How can Romney win when all odds are against him and rightly so. The man is so retro it's a disgrace. People, wake up! We can't let this man have any say and he sure is not "entitled " nor has he the intelligence, class, empathy, nor cares about America! A big FAKE he is.
02:55 PM on 09/26/2012
Obama never worked for anything in his life. I think he defines fake. Romney is self made.
04:35 AM on 09/23/2012
In case, Mr. Reich, you have forgotten, Voter Suppression Act, stopping young voters, minorities, and middle class voters turning out for 2012 election. Just to remember what happened in Florida in the 2000 election Bush v. Gore, maybe you should present this as well.
02:05 PM on 09/22/2012
Robert Reich, you did not say one word about how Republicans control voting machines and count the votes. Remember what Stalin said? We all know about voter disenfranchisement. But the fact is that the pre-election Likely Voter polls are virtually always correct in predicting the RECORDED VOTE, even though they always UNDERSTATE the Democratic True Vote.

It's still too early. You may be right. Romney could win the debates and the official RECORDED vote. But there is no way that Obama will lose the True Vote. If the undecided voters swing to Obama, he is a lock to win. The only way Obama loses is if the election is stolen. That is the bottom line.

But like all career Democrats, you avoid mentioning the Election Fraud factor. Why? The only question is this: Will Obama overcome the 5% Fraud factor? Gore couldn't. Neither could Kerry. But they both won the True Vote.

In 2008, Obama had 58% based on the True Vote Model, which confirmed the UNADJUSTED state exit poll aggregate. He had SIXTY-ONE percent in the National Exit poll - before it was FORCED TO MATCH the bogus recorded 52.9-45.6%%. He won the TRUE VOTE BY 23 MILLION - but fraud at the voting machines reduced his margin to 9.5 million. If the election was held today, Obama would win.

Pretty bad when you have to use such methods as voter id requirements to help yourself get elected. Just like Paul Ryan won in WI out spent by a tremendous amount of money. He did not win by much. In fact both Mass. and WI are for Obama. This tells you something.
02:56 PM on 09/26/2012
Yes, please let's not require people to have a friggin ID at the voting booth. Its so onerous.

If you are going to enact this you must give more time and the cost for an ID should be minimal. No profit making on this. For seniors, people in shelters, and handicapped etc. they should accomadate by having someone come in to their centers and register them. Documents are difficult to find and take a long time receive. It is so obvious what they are trying to do. One state tried to prevent weekend voting, we will not accomodate weekend voting for the black people. 51% of the voters on the weekend were black. Also, in Democratic districts they were opening the polling place later than the Republican polling places. Come on now, even a Rep. can see what is going on here. I hope the Dems kick the GOTP's butts. Oppresing 11 states. What else do you do when you are desperate.
10:50 PM on 10/02/2012
Why not? It's called keeping it fair and legal. Heck, you have to have an id to drive a car, get a plane ticket, buy beer...this is WAY more important. The only people who have an issue with showing an id have something to hide.
04:29 AM on 09/22/2012
Early voting starts next week in many places. Give one day to your country even if it means standing in line. We stood in line in 2008, the weather is good vote early. The debates will be watched, but the GOP can spend all they want on ads, thats what the mute button is for on your remote. Ads are not swaying the voters, the GOP has voters burnt out from their negative primary.

If anything cinches the election for Romney and the Republicans it will be #4 - Voter suppression. It has decimated Democratic Florida registration.

Not as sad as underhanded and undemocratic tactics intended to circumvent the democratic process. Shame! Shame! Shame!

Being caught on video bragging about voter suppression is sad, too. :)

I see Reich's reasons 3 and 4 as being more probable for helping Romney. While there may be two job reports left, I would find it hard to believe that the Nov. 2 jobs report will make a difference to anyone. By then, I would think that everyone who intends to vote will have already made up their minds. While Romney could out-perform Obama in the debates, I think that it is unlikely. Romney almost always looks stiff and does not relate well to non-millionaires and non-billionaires. I think that Obama will do much better than Romney in the debates.

“Whether Barack Obama is simply incompetent as president or has some hidden agenda to undermine this country, at home and abroad, he has nearly everything he needs to ruin America, including a fool for a vice president” — Thomas Sowell, in a column for RealClearPolitics, 6/8/10

If this incompetent team wins, we have more problems on our hands in this country than just the presidency. A new philosophy will engulf this country where people will expect without giving anything in return. Where the work ethic will become even more compromised than it already is. We are becoming a society of coddling vs.correction. Appeasement vs. standing up for truth and for ourselves.. Free stuff vs. freedom. A society where the uninformed and takers are put on pedestals to secure votes and maintain power. It all adds up to disaster.

Voter ID laws should have to be enacted a full 4 years before they are put into effect to avoid a direct conflict of interest.

If the ID's required are free, they're legal. Because the ID's cost, because birth certificate issuances cost, these are poll taxes to pay before you can vote. I.e. these are 100% unconstitutional as implemented until the access is open to everyone with same ease for all. If you don't believe me, just read those big fresh new books you have -- they were your history texts.
02:58 PM on 09/26/2012
voting is not some frivolous thing. I need an ID to buy a drink but not to vote?
09:56 AM on 09/21/2012
Polling places are so outdated with everyone on the Internet. Everyone with a Social Security number above 18 should be able to log into a central website and local websites to cast their vote. This get rid of the intimidation and harassment factor and guarantees the with a peaceful and private chance to vote. at birth the SS is given and at death the SS is retired.
