The First Presidential Debate

Posted: 10/04/2012 8:14 am

In Wednesday night's debate, Romney won on style while Obama won on substance. Romney sounded as if he had conviction, which means he's either convinced himself that the lies he tells are true or he's a fabulous actor.

But what struck me most was how much Obama allowed Romney to get away with: Five times Romney accused Obama of raiding Medicare of $716 billion, which is a complete fabrication. Obama never mentioned the regressiveness of Romney's budget plan -- awarding the rich and hurting the middle class and the poor. He never mentioned Bain Capital, or Romney's 47 percent talk, or Romney's "carried-interest" tax loophole. Obama allowed Romney to talk about replacing Dodd-Frank and the Affordable Care Act without demanding that Romney be specific about what he'd replace and why. And so on.

I've been worried about Obama's poor debate performance for some time now. He was terrible in the 2008 primary debates, for example. Expectations are always high -- he's known as an eloquent orator. But when he has to think on his feet and punch back, he's not nearly as confident or assured as he is when he is giving a speech or explaining a large problem and its solution. He is an educator, not a pugilist, and this puts him at a disadvantage in any debate.

Romney stayed on script. If you look at a transcript of his remarks you'll see that he repeated the same lines almost word for word in different contexts. He has memorized a bunch of lines, and practiced delivering them. The overall effect is to make him seem assured and even passionate about his position. He said over and over that he cares about jobs, about small businesses, and ordinary Americans. But his policies and his record at Bain tell a very different story.

The question now is whether Team Obama understands that our president must be more aggressive and commanding in the next two debates -- and be unafraid to respectfully pin Romney to the floor.

Mr. Reich I'm wondering about this notion of a "rhetoric of nonsense" And that a fabrication can be an effective rhetorical devise if it, "... suit [the liars] purpose" ( Frankfurt, On Bullshit (Princeton: Princeton University Press, 2005), p. 56). But, this doesn't explain why Obama would let, "Romney...get away...[with accusing him] of raiding Medicare of $716 billion....five times...which is a complete fabrication" (par. 2). Expecting that president Obama is most effectively a rhetorican and not a pugilist as you say.And thats aspection is particularly troublesome.

I have read the comments here and have watched the debate replay on Youtube and I must say that there are lots of people here that believe Obama was playing nice. I couldn't disagree more. Obama's body language, the way he stood at the podium, his lack of eye contact and his lack of excitement gave the impression that he did not know what to say. "Playing nice" is an excuse.

Meanwhile Romney couldn't wait to talk while Obama suggested to the Moderator more than once that "maybe we should move on to another topic' when discussing the economy.

Obama was trying to change the debate into a war of stammers, smirks and scowls. His head was in an entirely different game.

My sentiments precisely, Mr Reich ! The Prez is no loser though the media is jumping all over him for being restrained and dignified. He knows how to deliver the goods and he's been doing it for all the dismal doubters who haven't been noticing it or dismissing his barnstorming, More than all the goofs and gaffes R's been making all along the campaign trail and overseas as well. !!

Obama is delivering in the same way Bush did. Quantitative easing to save the banks. The change I hoped for was restraint of Bush out-of-control spending. Instead we got banks sitting on giant cash piles looking for someone to lend it to. This only eased the pain for bankers.

To be fair, Obama did the same thing with Romney and his $5 Trillion tax cut, as Romney did with the $716 Million in medicare. Neither candidate actually said what the other accused them of. But some independent studies concluded that. Independent studies conlcuded Romneys tax plan would be a cut of $5 Trillon over 10 years (I think 10 years), Romneys obviously sees it differently.

On the other hand Obama is not cutting $716 million from seniors. Independent studes say, the cuts which are being taken from doctors and hospitals will effect seniors by limited service and utlimately costing more. Now of course, Obama says this isn't the case.

On both issues, Politifact says they are half true.

Difference was that Romney made his point and rebutted Obama. That's debate. Romney scored on skill sets Obama lacks, which serves to highlight Obama's other weaknesses on prime time.

.........
Oh yes. Romney wants to destroy the Middle Class........Laughable nonsense. Government has already destroyed the Middle Class. 40% taxation Federal, State, Sales tax, meals tax, hotel tax, tax on investments, tax on water, tax on automobiles, tax boats, tax on cigarettes tax on ownership of cars (excise tax) Tax on real estate, tax on death, on and on and on and on.....

You forgot the new Obamacare tax.

I think Obama doesn't care about politics. It bores him. He cares about doing the right thing for the American people.I don't believe Romney won that debate. He says the same old thing all Republicans say. Acting all high and mighty like he knows anything. I can't stand his voice either. He will never be president. I think people just don't really listen. When they get to the age of medicare and social security maybe their brains will kick in. We already know the Republicans wrecked this country and Romney won't be any different. He wants the rich to stay rich..period.

I agree with the first sentence, but beyond that I think everything about America bores Obama, especially the American people. I sense that he would prefer being the president of Norway. Nice, neat, rich, social welfare state, and 100% European.

What is your heritage? I am sure you do have some European heritage as most white Americans are from Europe. Have you been to Norway? I guess not because it is not such a bad place. How about those farmers receiving checks from the government? Without the government spending there would be no economy. Do you realize how much the government pays to train these doctors? You need to do your research before you talk about socialism. Every country in the world has some socialism as there is no pure capitalism or pure socialism.. Read and think and do your research!!!

It's a sad day when so many americans pay more attention to how something was said rather than what was said. Former Governor Romney chose the right tone and exuded confidence, but was only repeating the same tired claims that we alteady know won't solve the problems we face. That and his penchant of being for things he was formally against the day before combine to make him a frightening candidate.

I think Obama looked very tired, tho, too. Maybe something was wrong with him....?
08:51 AM on 10/05/2012
Obama is a poor communicator. Yes, he can deliver a speech, but, as you say, does not think on his feet and seems to "cave" on issues (with Repubs).

Re Romney, who presented himself well, though what he said is garbage, you know they say the difference between politicians nad actors is that actors are better looking.

Romney won because he portrayed Obama as liberal, not because Obama wasn't liberal enough. After reading the posts, it's obvious you don't realize that Americans are not liberal. They have jobs, mortgages, auto loans, credit cards, use ATMs - all of which come from capitalism. Liberals are those too young to have those things, and those who don't do real work. Liberals work in the public sector, or for unions that protect slackers. Or they teach or write about life. They are 20% of voters, can't elect anybody. Obama won because he's not a liberal. Note that Romney went centrist, that's where the voters are. OWS and Tea Party don't reflect voters.
01:21 PM on 10/05/2012
Centrist is where any available votes are left. Romney has his 40% or whatever in the bag, so is free to flip flop. IF he turns it around I expect liberal Republican policy. The right wing will be disappointed by the man who invented Obamacare, but he will get things passed through Congress no matter who is in control. Sill unlikely....Romney is a little bit like The Great Compromiser Henry Clay, most famous for inventing the phrases "self-made man" and "I'd rather be right than President".

Indeed, makes you wonder if it was all preordained doesn't it?

We need to ALL start understanding that a very few deep pockets are pulling the strings... and it sure as hell isn't us, no matter who we vote for.

Reverse that Mitt won on substance. Obama can not run on his own record! He quotes studies! HIre a man who has created jobs and saved business! We need America to recover not go deeper in debt!

Obama also needs to be more aggressive when fighting republicans in congress. We know he shares our philosophy, but he must be more aggressive fighting for it.

There was no winning associated with Obama in that debate. Try to spin all you want, but Obama lost on all accounts

Don't hold your breath for Obama to become a scrapper. Big Banks the Old Money behind them are in full control of America. Eat your factory farmed, chemically fed food. Enjoy your diabetes and work into a prolonged fatigued death. Making your masters richer.

Until the American people refuse the slop and demand the richness that is our right nothing will change. No President will do squat about the real problems until MONEY IS TAKEN OUT OF ELECTIONS.

Romney won the debate because he attacked Obama as a liberal - which only 20% of voters are, compared to 40% conservative. Romney won because of Dodd-Frank. Most Americans believe the government has no business, regulating business. Because they believe we have a right to gamble our money at Vegas, with Wall St, or when we buy a house that's too expensive - and we blame ourselves when it happens, not Vegas or Wall St. People want the freedom to fail, they want capitalism.
