"Barack America!"

2008-08-23-BIDENANDOBAMAILLINOIS.jpg

A slip of the tongue by Joe Biden as he spoke at his introduction as Barack Obama's running mate in Springfield, Illinois, this afternoon may prove to be the key to the election--and to what Sen. Biden brings to the ticket.

When Biden referred to Sen. Obama, he called him "Barack America."

Desperate Republicans and Faux News are trying to turn this slip to their advantage, mocking Obama as "Captain America."

In fact, the slip reflects what Obama represents: America as It Can Be, a "Yes, We Can!" America -- what has always been the Promise of America -- that we are all created free and equal; that everyone has the same chance; that there's nothing we cannot accomplish if we work hard and work together.

Barack Obama represents a renewal of the best of American values at the same time that he represents the American future.

The only way that John McCain can win is to succeed at what he has been doing: raising fears about Obama not being quite "American" enough.

And Joe Biden is one who will help greatly in knocking down that sort of politics of smear and fear. He will help to show that the Democratic presidential nominee is, indeed, Barack America, a man with the Vision to oppose Republican Division

"Who is this guy?" many voters have been worrying. Today Joe Biden told them who he is: Barack America."

Historian Robert S. McElvaine is Elizabeth Chisholm Professor of Arts & Letters at Millsaps College. His latest book is Grand Theft Jesus: The Hijacking of Religion in America.

I can't wait for "Barack America" to become a reality. Last chance, folks. By 2012 it will be too late for all of us.

Well said, time's running out quickly. Let's get on it. "BARACK AMERICA" may be our last chance.

glad to see Obama continues his msg of change with the Biden pick..Let's see..Joe took office in Jan. of 1973 !! 35 yrs ago...that's b/4 most of you were even born..good thing PC wasn't too prevalent then.

Obama IS continuing his message of change with Biden by his side......the fact that Biden has 35 yrs experience in the senate, just gives us confidence that , in Jan 2009, Biden will know exactly who to target within the congress to get the changes we so desperately need................ Biden is a PERFECT compliment to Obama

Oh...and I was 15 when Joe took office.................

BARACK AMERICA fits.... we , the people, run his campaign

Saw on CNN where Biden got 9500 votes in the primaries...that's right 9500 ! Hillary got 18 million !! Oh well, I'm sure those 18 million will fall in line...the only question is which line...?

For gosh sakes, give it a rest! If you look at the polls (as questionable as they really are) there are 52% of Hillary's supporters who are already on board, another 27% who aren't sure (but probably will come over) and a supposed 23% who say they won't. But, as it becomes more and more clear how dangerous McCain will be for our country, I would be over 90% of them come over as well.

18 million Democrats will NOT vote for a president that undermines everything they have ever fought for...no matter how disenfranchised they may feel!!!!

This election is far too important to throw because of petty squabbles. It's up to us who are already committed to do everything in our power to help those who are not of this.

Let it go.

In the last months of her campaign Clinton made a conscious strategic choice to go for "All or Nothing."

You can go for the jugular and throw below-the-belt punches and expect that you still have a shot at the VP spot. Clinton went for broker (literally!) and left nothing in the tank.

There is a consequence to burning bridges... you better be ready to stay on your side of the river.

A country that is ruled by law, a country where everyone has an equal chance, where the least of its citizenry is protected out of compassion by all. If that's this "Barack America", ship it in!

Please explain "least of its citizenry is protected out of compassion." Are you a "compassionate conservative?"

I'm surprised that Faux News chooses to mock Obama by calling him "Captain America". That comic book character is probably the most associated with honor, duty, justice, bravery, and leadership. If Faux News thinks it's an insult to compare Obama to Captain America, then they must have sunk to new depths of cynicism!
01:40 PM on 08/24/2008
All of you just don't get it...the American people will not elect someone as radical as Obama....McGovern got swamped....Dukakis (the tank commander), lost....Gore in 2000,(oh forgot, the GOP stole that one), and Kerry in 04...none of these are America's "cup of tea."
The Dems will control congress...the GOP will have the WH...gridlock & bickering will continue....
Pelosi and Reid will snipe and whine..and don't forget ..they presided over the most "do-nothing" congress in our history...so get used to it..

The silver lining is that we get to keep more of our earnings, with Obama still in the senate.!!

Yes, and we'll get rid of those darned kids. The government will put em in uniforms and send them off to Iraq, Iran, Russia, insert McCain's latest war here. Oh, an you won't get the tax break unless you make over 5 million a year. If you'd middle class, your taxes will probably go up...way up.

I loved the Barack America slip. It is time for all of America to realize that there are many ways to be American. That there are many ways to live and express the American Dream. That is the essence of the American Dream. It doesn't have a color, ethnicity, or religion. What is does have is character, stuggle and triumph. Both Obama and Biden have exhibited those qualities both while in the spotlight and in the shadows. They show us different spectrums of the dream that's rooted in the same values.

Ha, I love it. I think Joe was trying to get too many words into too short a time. They need to cut his speeches -- too much rhetoric softens the sharpness.

So, now that Biden is there to provide some whup-a$$, maybe it's time, not for Captain America, but for Barry O'Bama. He's a little bit Irish isn't he?
10:50 AM on 08/24/2008
Yes, I hope they keep a speechwriter with him and Solis-Doyle helps him stay on message.

He had a lot of great lines in yesterday's speech but it was like an essay that goes back to paragraph 2 when it should be going on to paragraph 5.

Clean it up, and he'll be great. Let him ramble, and you'll lose half the message (and maybe some of the targeted audience).

Biden's biggest challenge will be showing deference, respect, and admiration for the man at the TOP of the ticket. It's going to be tough, to put his own ego aside and campaign for OBAMA'S message, vision, and agenda--not take credit for too much himself.

What a beautiful thread of comments! You all restore my faith in that "YES WE CAN" and indeed "WE WILL"!

What a wonderful site this would be, if troll-free. Dare I dream?

I know, I know, I'll find them on the next one. And off to battle I go.

This just shows me how scared and desperate therethugs are and I LOVE it!! Now instead of focusing on th ereal issues concerning American people they have already started with negative ads about the rally with Barack/Joe. Yes the primarys were long but Barack won fair and square and why Hillary supporters say that Obama was negative towards her that is just not true. The way Hill,Bill and their supporters are still acting only keeps them in the spotlight in a negative way and now the rethugs have latched on to their attitudes and are beginning to run negative ads aimed at Obama but are really aimed at laughing at her while claimimg to be trying to attract her supporters. And we all know thats the republican way(lie, cheat, steal). And I love Barack=Renewable Hope! Dag thats a good one Barack/Biden'08

I think they both seemed a little nervous yesterday. Totally understandable after all the lead-up to that initial joint appearance. I thought they looked really good together and I doubt we will see those nerves again.

I was watching and definitely it was a slip. he didn't even know he had said it afterwards.
Saying that, I think it would make a great slogan.
I can just see the Barack-America T-shirts now.
