Where Would I be Without My Mother-in-Law?

I’m thankful for my mother-in-law. No, really.

That might seem mundane. I’m thankful for many things -– wife, life, health, family, the fact that I have several good jobs, etc. –- but in the specific here-and-now of Thanksgiving, the nod goes to my wife’s mother.

(Note: I have outstanding parents of my own, at least one of whom himself blogs on this site, and I am daily thankful for them.)

Here’s why: Thanksgiving is the best holiday of the year. Think about it. You don’t need to buy or receive presents. This in turn means you don’t have to worry about thank-you notes. There’s no requirement that you attend religious services. Really very little is required of you. All you have to do is eat great heaping amounts of really good food (mmmm, stuffing) and if it’s your thing watch a couple of football games. It’s a perfect holiday.

I was explaining this belief to a co-worker the other day and she looked at me levelly and suggested that it’s fine for me to sit back, relax and enjoy the ease of Thanksgiving –- I’m not the one who has to actually prepare the food or host. I get the easy part. To which I quickly responded that I was very lucky because my mother-in-law, in addition to being a great cook, genuinely seems to enjoy entertaining and feeding. (Mmmmm, stuffing.)

So thank you, Frances, for helping make Thanksgiving … the best holiday of the year.
