One Bush Lie Against Another

Posted December 4, 2005 | 05:42 PM (EST)

In January of 2005, the US military commanders estimated the number of insurgents at 5,000. Bush recently told us the Iraqis have 40 battalions. At 700 per battalion (the standard size), that means the Iraqi military and police forces have a combined 28,000 soldiers. That's almost a 6 to 1...

On Leaving Iraq

Posted October 17, 2005 | 06:07 PM (EST)

I have been here 90 days, teaching English to Iraqi military personnel so that they can work with and be trained by US military personnel. I was against this war, but volunteered to come here for several reasons. First, I felt I needed to see what was going on in...

5 Soldiers Died on Tuesday

Posted October 5, 2005 | 03:52 PM (EST)

Five soldiers died on Tuesday. But President Bush nominated Miers to the Supreme Court. Five soldiers died on Tuesday. But the Yankees beat the Angels. Five soldiers died on Tuesday. But Tom DeLay was indicted again. Five soldiers died on Tuesday. But a tour boat that overturned didn't have enough...

Intelligent Design

Posted September 22, 2005 | 03:33 PM (EST)

Let's take this intelligent design concept and run with it. Let's assume that there is an Intelligent Designer. He created this universe in general and our world specifically according to a brilliant plan. Then He (or She, depending on your personal beliefs), left it pretty much in control of humans....

Five People George W. Bush Should Meet in Heaven

Posted September 15, 2005 | 06:28 PM (EST)

Granted, some of these folks will be representative of an entire class, sort of like a heavenly version of a class action suit. As Bush meets these people, I’d like Laura to be there to explain how a “good man” is compatible with policies or actions related to these people.

Predictions for the ROI President

Posted September 9, 2005 | 02:53 PM (EST)

It’s ironic, in a way, to watch things unfold in New Orleans. Katrina has, in one fell swoop, created a welfare state of nearly half a million people. The president and the Republican Party have held as a matter of policy that the government shouldn’t be handing out money to...

Baghdad Not Safe

Posted September 8, 2005 | 03:29 PM (EST)

Here in southern Iraq, I work with and see Iraqis from Baghdad on a daily basis. When I got here 30 days ago, they invited me home with them when they took leave. They said it was safe in Baghdad, at least in their part. But now they are worried....

Tapped Out

Posted August 31, 2005 | 09:16 PM (EST)

OK, you billionaires who have taken advantage of the very unchristian greed fest that is the hallmark of the Bush administration, it's time to step up and give some of that money back. CEO's should pony up and pay for the recovery of New Orleans, Gulfport, Biloxi, and the rest...

Observations from Iraq

Posted August 26, 2005 | 10:05 AM (EST)

I retired from the US Army in 1994. When I did, smokers were a distinct minority. The official army policy was that smoking was to be discouraged; ergo, if you were a leader and you smoked, you were not being a very good leader. Smoking could affect your career.

That...

The Things We Miss

Posted August 23, 2005 | 08:39 PM (EST)

I know I'm only in Iraq for 90 days, so I can't really complain. What I say next can be multiplied by four for most Army personnel, and doubled for most Air Force personnel. I'm on a time treadmill -- I get up, get dressed, eat breakfast, go to work,...

The “Nuh Uh" Administration

Posted August 22, 2005 | 04:00 PM (EST)

I just can't help marvel at the ability of the press to get bogged down in detail. If you want to rate Bush on antiterrorism, the case is simple. Since he became president, there have been two major terrorist attacks on the US. The first one, the one everyone keeps...
