Peaceful Revolution: When Did It Get So Hard To Be A Mom?

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

Since when did it get so hard to be a mom? Ten years ago, we didn't worry about sending a peanut butter and jelly sandwich into school with our children; we didn't medicate our eight year olds to get them through the school day; and the movie Rain Man was all we knew of autism. Today, it is estimated that 50 percent of Hispanic and African-American children will develop diabetes, that 1 in 90 boys has autism, and that 1 in 4 children has asthma. Pediatrics just reported that from 2002-2005, there was a 103 percent increase in diabetes medication for children, a 47 percent increase in asthma medication, a 41 percent increase in ADHD medication and a 15 percent increase in high cholesterol medicine.

How did our children get so sick?

As a proud, American mother of four children, I was stunned to learn that chemicals that have been added to the U.S. food supply over the last ten years that have either been banned or labeled in countries like Australia, Europe, the UK, Japan ....even Russia because of the health risks they present. I was stunned to learn that no human studies have ever been conducted on the long term safety of these chemical additives, so our children have literally been engaged in a live human trial for the last ten years without our informed consent!

Did you know that food additives and dyes have been linked to asthma and ADHD?

Did you know that insecticides have been engineered into our food supply? Yikes!

Did you know that there is a synthetic growth hormone was introduced into milk in 1994? Yuck!

Did you know that Kraft doesn't include Yellow #5 in the mac 'n cheese boxes they sell overseas?

Did you know that allergies are one of the first indicators that a child's immune system is compromised? Some might even say that children with allergies are our "canaries in the coal mine," warning us of how dangerous our food supply has become.

If we stop to listen to these little "canaries," we can learn a lot! And we can go a long way in protecting the health of our little ones!

If you need a little inspiration or a bit of background information on what's going on with our food, log onto to allergykids.com, search our Resources page, learn a little (or a lot!) about simple steps that you can take to protect the health of your family. We've been featured in the New York Times, on Good Morning America, on CBS News with Katie Couric and in other news media talking about the toxins in our food supply and the impact that they are having on the health of our children (and all of us!).

And feel free to ask me a question. We've built out a great team of experts, including pediatricians, scientists, neurologists and researchers from around the world to help you take care of your family! Check out allergykids.com and then circle back to momsrising.org and let's get to work, as there is so much that you can do to take control of what may seem like an out of control situation!

A Peaceful Revolution is a blog about innovative ideas to strengthen America's families through public policies, business practices, and cultural change. Done in collaboration with MomsRising.org, read a new post here each week.

Spring is coming people! The best food you can feed your children is food you grow yourself! When I lived in an apartment I did container gardening. Now that I have some yard I have raised beds. Not only will the things you grow be better for them but they can help and spend quality family time together. Hey the might even learn something. If you can't grow your own then check out farm co-ops, buy local. There's a wealth of information right at your fingertips. Mother Earth News is a great place to start.

Great post....

As long as our medical establishment, the FDA, and USDA are controlled by corporations, who put profit over health, then our children will be at risk...

When they play soccer on grass dosed with dangerous Herbacides, or when they drink milk labeled Organic that's really not organic because definitions of organic were changed to allow what was once considered non organic, to sold as organic .

When they unkowingly eat cookies made with genetically modified organizims, containing sugar from genetically modified sugar beets.

And when you buy food from once trusted Organic brands, that have been purchased by large Agri Business Corporations, that is now little different than the sugary cerals sold under well known names..

And when you are decieved by highly publicized studies trying to discredit supplements, that are fundamentally flawed, and used by corporations to push their agenda of robbing the public of alternatives to their carcinogentic wares.

The food and drug industry, routinely engages in a vast deception against the public.

American's are led to believe that their food and medicine is safe, but that belief will put their families health at risk.

My ex-husband's daughter was put on Ritalin when she was 4 so she could attend preschool. She's 18 now and can barely function mentally. She had a horrible diet as a child, constant allergies, was always on antibiotics.
When we had her, we saw marked improvement in her health simply by eliminating sugar, especially drinks with dyes, or any boxed, canned food. We fed her fresh veggies and tons of clean water, and she improved immediately.
But it never lasted, once she went back to the crappy diet, she'd get sick all over again.

I've been wondering about the link between our foods and medicines and the outbreak of MRSA. Two of my four kids have reoccuring outbreaks of staph infecions. I don't know where it came from or how to stop it from coming back. My beautiful boys skin just keep getting more and more scars. His doctor is sympathetic, but really doesn't have any more info than I do. While the outbreaks are painful and leave lasting scars, I am more concerned with the long term effects of this being in his body. Will it just go away, or will he have health issues later in life from this?

Hang in there LovingHope,
I have a buddy you went through the same thing. He stuck to his guns and told them to piss off. 6 years later and his kid is doing great in school, has cool friends and is on his way to being all a parent could wish for.

I have a daughter who was diagnosed with ADHD and I refuse to put her on medication, she is still having problems focusing but her behavior has improved. It doesn't matter I will not let the teachers pressure me in to giving my daughter medication. I feel sorry for all those kids that are put on medication for some reason or another. The side effects are horrible. Why can't we be like the countries that you mentioned and care about our children's health. It's sad and embarrassing to see how unhealthy the majority of americans are. I am trying alternative methods to help my daughter. I don't trust the medical field right now. I feel we are all just ginny pigs to all the medication out there.

My mother put my younger brother on every medication the doctor threw at her. The side effects were beyond horrible. He decided he wasn't going to take them any more. He has found a way to deal with his issues, just like the rest of us did in earlier years. I am so proud of him.

Keep resisting and have faith in your daughters ability to adapt.
