Actress Julianne Moore Asks Washington for a Plan to Fight Climate Change

Posted: 10/19/2012 9:11 pm

It's just a few weeks before the presidential election and the season is heating up with debates, powerful speeches, and truly dreadful TV ads. These all serve to remind us what matters most: our freedom. As parents, we watch democracy in action and cannot help but wonder what the world will be like for our children. Why haven't the presidential candidates talked about their plan to combat climate change?

We trust scientists to guide and inform us about global warming and we look to celebrities to entertain us. Like the scientist that enlightens us with sound science and tells us, "The wait-and-see approach to the climate crisis will be too late," celebrities can illuminate and help amplify this message. Actress, mom and Moms Clean Air Force member Julianne Moore lights up a movie screen. And as we saw with Julianne's last MCAF video, when she steps off the stage and into her daily role as a mom, her heartfelt advocacy has far-reaching effects.

"Too many politicians are only adding more hot air to the climate conversation. We need to know exactly where the candidates stand on clean air for our children. .. We want a plan for a clean energy future... an end to global warming... Moms know about sustainable energy. After all, mother love in an unending supply and it keeps kids healthy." --actress and mom Julianne Moore

Please watch and share Julianne Moore's new video and help us fight dirty air to protect our children's freedom to breathe healthy air.

Here's Washington's plan to fight climate change. Drill baby, drill!

The track record of interventions inspired by this kind of agitation is not a good one. Bio-fuels increasing rates of starvation and deforestation. Windfarms increasing cost of electricity, threatening grid stablility, and despoiling the countryside. Solar panel manufacturing producing substantial pollution, including the release of greenhouse gases thousands of times more effective than CO2, and adding expensive energy production units that need to be subsidised. On top of this, I would draw attention to the large and growing list of 'renewable energy' companies that have gleefully taken millions of dollars in grants or subsidised loans, and shortly thereafter gone bankrupt. Then there are the electric cars that no one really wants except as a means to make eco-political statements. Meanwhile, global mean temperatures have hardly changed in 16 years ...

Well done Julianne,

A pity you didn't mention anything about putting a price on pollution. Clean energy is great, but our experience here in Australia shows that you just end up wasting a heap of tax-payer's money unless you actually make people pay for their greenhouse gas emissions and use that money to find renewable energy. This is the only sensible market-based solution. As soon as people see that there is a cost associated with their emissions they start to reduce them. We have only had our carbon tax for 4 months and already 3 coal power stations have said that their shutting down boilers because of the drop in demand. Meanwhile farmers are getting money to plant trees and solar and entrepreneurs are getting money to put in wind and solar farms.

Go for it with the petition and good luck. The rest of the world depends on you!

Ground level ozone, which is exacerbated by the burning of coal, oil, and gas for energy, creates devastating suffering and illness in susceptible individuals. This kind of human sacrifice needs to stop.

How are mothers in Oklahoma protecting their children against wind blown dust during the current dust storms?

How will mothers provide for their children as crop failures from drought increase?

Because only religous fanatics care about climate change. And because there is nothing we can do to prevent or even influence Global Climate. And before this hot year here in USA we had 2 of the coldest winters and even summers ever. And because people have stopped caring what the Hollywood bazzaro crowd thinks anymore. And because --

Global climatologists claim that the Earth's natural greenhouse effect keeps the Earth 33C warmer than it would be without the trace gases in the atmosphere. 80 percent of this warming is attributed to water vapor and 20 percent to the 0.03 volume percent CO2. If such an extreme effect existed, it would show up even in a laboratory experiment involving concentrated CO2 as a thermal conductivity anomaly. It would manifest itself as a new kind of `superinsulation' violating the conventional heat conduction equation. However, for CO2 such anomalous heat transport properties never have been observed.

From you first error filled sentence fragment, to your mis-understanding of physical science, your entry is a triumph of error.

In your explanation of carbon dioxide and water vapor, you somehow failed to mention that the level of water vapor in the atmosphere plunges down to around 10 parts per million and less as you go up into the atmosphere, while CO2 remains at nearly 400 parts per million throughtout almost the entire atmosphere. Water vapor does precipitate when it gets cold as you may or may not know and, if you watched the record parachute jump last week, you know that it gets cold very quickly as you go up.

As to "violating the conventional heat conduction equation", carbon dioxide does no such thing. Carbon dioxide molecules absorb infrared photons due to the dipole moment of the molecule. They also re-emit infrared photons, but by briefly trapping infrared photons, carbon dioxide molecules increase the odds that an infrared photon will not escape into space but will instead re-emit downward, thus raising the temperature of the lower atmosphere. Some photons are transformed into mechanical energy, heating neighboring molecules.

I recognize that this is not a peer reviewed science journal, but please do not present your silly arguments as if you know what you are talking about. You don't.

As best as I can tell, extremist Republicans and Christians don't have any celebrities with any brains and an ability to speak clearly beyond articulating the 2 words "Al Gore". Unlike some of Ms. Moore's wealth, they keep trying to take Mr. Gore's hard earned money away and his ability to make more to the benefit of almost 200 countries.

I trust she isn't referring to clean energy as industrial wind and solar energy. Open bladed wind mills by the tens of thousands should never have been put into production with 200 foot blades that slice up millions of birds and bats. I live in the Tehachapi Pass and witness the carnage to wetlands, virgin forest and our beautiful, life teeming Mojave desert. Prime agricultural land is being converted to solar panels. You can't eat windmills, solar panels or money.

[slice up millions of birds and bats]

Total US bird kills from wind turbines is estimated at about 35,000 annually, not "millions." This is a microscopic fraction of the number of birds killed by other human activities.

[You can't eat windmills, solar panels or money.]

You also can't eat crops that failed to grow due to excess heat, drought, etc.

In wildness is the salvation of mankind

I do hope, you learn as much as you can about ecology. Earth and all life need more champions like you.

The wetlands, forests and desert ecosystems of which you speak, are the natural, life giving surface of the Earth or ecosystems. According to ecologically literate scientists, when we skin ecosystems for any reason, we are essentially killing that much of the Earth. These scientists maintain, the extinctions of both plant and animal biodiversity, like birds and bats, is about as safe for mankind as "thermonuclear war." Why not solar panels on roofs and buildings instead of skinning the Earth and every reason humans are alive?

No energy can release oxygen, balance the gaseous composition of the atmosphere, naturally moderate and regulate the climate, naturally provide the "climate cooling" water cycle, naturally sequester the greenhouse gases, provide the nitrogen cycle and the entirety of Earth's biogeochemistry, purify the air and water and create and renew a life giving soil while providing pollination, decomposition, seed dispersal, 75% of all new medicines, 99% of all pest control and the control and checking of human disease pathogens that cause global epidemics.

Birds, bats and all wild, native species are the rivets holding spaceship Earth altogether; they hold down jobs and have roles to play for all life on Earth, including mankind. Every reason man breathes is because of ecosystems, and ecosystems and their native species of plants and animals or biodiversity are every reason ecosystems are the eco-nomy of life itself.
