Muddled Martinis the Right Drink for Our Times

Posted: 08/10/11 05:01 PM ET

Riots, plunging world markets, broken budget deals, useless political systems are enough to send anyone to the booze. Hey! We're not judging. We're just thinking that when you reach for a long, tall, stiff one -- it should taste good. We've been experimenting and found the perfect solution for the times: a muddled and shaken cocktail.

So as the summer heats up with events well beyond your control, constructively channel your frustration by shaking up these little babies. One bit of advice: make a large pitcher of these or you'll spend the entire evening in the kitchen making refills for your guests

The B*tches Muddled Basil Martini

  • 2 1/2  jiggers of  vodka or gin
  • 1  jigger simple syrup
  • 1  jigger fresh squeezed lime juice
  • 4 fresh sweet basil leaves
  • 1 fresh spearmint leaf (or to taste)

Muddle the basil, simple syrup and lime juice together. Add gin or vodka. Combine in a cocktail shaker with loads of ice. Shake until there are shards of ice and the mix turns frothy. Strain.

Stop calling everything martini! This is a muddled basil gimlet at best.

... and there is no citrus juice or herbs in a Martini either....
Why do people DO this?! A Martini is gin, french vermouth and either an olive or a citrus peel twist. If you want to be all retro and pre-1950s about it you can also add a dash of orange bitters. Oh, and Vodka "Martini" drinkers are sad and deluded. Just thought that you should know...
