If you can't leave home without one, you're probably one of the people responsible for making the U.S. the single biggest consumer of bottled water in the world. In fact, U.S. residents drink more bottled water each year than any other beverage except carbonated soft drinks. Mexico, China, Brazil and Italy round out the top five consumers.
That being said, it's entirely possible your children may drink nothing but bottled water, as many households cook with it as well. This could mean the fluoride kids ingest from the public water system in many communities, never reaches them. Depending on which side of the ongoing debate about fluoride you're on, that's a good thing or a bad thing.
The Hatfield's and McCoy's had a greater chance of resolving their differences than do those for or against fluoride in water. The American Dental Association has long supported fluoridation where water systems are lacking. "In some situations you may see as much as a 40% greater chance of decay without fluoride," says Dr. Mark Wolff, Chair of the Department of Cariology and Comprehensive Care at New York University College of Dentistry. On the other hand, organized lobbying groups against fluoridation claim point out fluoride is has been linked to arthritis, allergies, kidney and thyroid dysfunctions, bone damage and even cancer.
Whether you want fluoride in your drinking water or not, here's the dilemma faced by people who rely solely on bottled water. Some bottled water has fluoride because it occurs naturally, some bottled water doesn't have fluoride because it has been taken out and some bottled water has had fluoride added to it. So, how do you tell the difference?(bottledwater.org)
If there is less than .6 milligrams of fluoride per liter of water, no labeling is required.
On the other hand, bottled water containing between .6 milligrams and 1 milligram per liter may bear the following claim: "Drinking fluoridated water may reduce the risk of (dental carries or tooth decay.)" Since most bottles for individual consumption are 8 ounces, you need to divide the milligrams by 4 to gauge the amount of fluoride in a single bottle.
Remember, according to the FDA too much fluoride, more than 2 milliliters per liter, can trigger a condition known as "fluorosis", which results in a brown staining or pitting on the permanent teeth. To find out exactly how much is in a bottle, you may want to check out a bottled water producer's website. "The fluoride levels in our products are spelled out in quality reports for all our brands posted on our company and individual brand websites," says Jane Lazgin of Nestle Waters North America, the largest provider of bottled water in the U.S.You can also dial a company's toll-free number and ask for the information or where best to access it. (nestle-watersna.com/Menu/OurBrands/Quality+Process/Quality+Reports.htm)
Just how much fluoride is optimum for kid's dental health? According to the ADA, ½ to 1 part per million is ideal. This may just beg the question whether there is any correlation between childhood cavities and bottled water consumption. "Data is hard to find," admits Dr. Wolff. He goes on to say there are still 100-million Americans living in areas without
fluoride, either naturally occurring or added. Parents in those locations should ask their dentists about fluoride supplements. Not knowing the ins and outs of all of this could have you singing the bottled water blues, no matter where you stand on the fluoride debate.

continued --The hearings in DC showed clearly how cover up was the game of choice in DC. Honesty DC study is lie and get teveryone else to lie and those that do not destroy them. Marc Edwards was defamed but but still kept grad students in the field for 6 months to prove the deception but was witheld all payment for the months of work. He did later win The Mac Arthur Award which is called the genius award in engineering. It gives a half million no strings he used some to get the data together for the paper to prove the damage happened to lead exposed children. ..The CDC made sure the kids had bottled water then tested them many months later as proof of low lead in blood. Levels drop 50% every month once the source ends. Some tests were done a year later. Schools were high pressure flushed and aerators the night before the lead tests which can make a toxic school test clear. Clear fraud that is. The EPA even went and changed the warning on lead in water to downgrade the risk to cover there butts. Now many health departments do not even check the water when a child is lead toxic even when they find no other reason or source. Leaded gas was the biggest reason decades ago. Now all they want to look at is lead paint and ignore proven toxic water.
Read the current data and none show ingested benfit CDC 99
The H2SiF6 is AWWA b703-06 and you can get a copy of the specification sheet with arsenic and lead at the top but over 20 contaminates with most radioactive. 1ppm Hydrogen fluoride in the air can etch glass, 1ppm of the H2SiF6 is so corrosive it eats holes in pipes and leaches lead from brass. With disinfectant added it is much more destructive many times over. This was documented in 2007 by two studies Maas and also Coplan and waterloowatch.com has both in full on home page that document leaching lead is worse with chloramines. EPA is now on a big push for everyone to use chloramines. They knew the destructive potential but did no testing. WashingtonDC discovered this when they switched in 2000 and lead went off the meter so they covered it up for over 2 years. Letting everyone drink water with hundreds and thousands of lead over the 15ppb limit. Seema Bhat leaked the data and was fired immediatly. Marc Edwards also discovered it when investigating huge increases in holes in pipes creating water and mildue destruction. The EPA,CDC and DC health department all joined together to claim no one harmed by faking one small 201 kid study. They blamed it all on lead pipes knowing most of the city had the problem with no lead pipes.
Roseann - Please Read "Brush Away Fluoride," by Kevin Brooker in today's (3/20) Calgary Herald

Excerpt:
They will also point to unambiguous remarks like the following, by Dr. J. William Hirzy of the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency, March 26, 2001: "In summary, we hold that fluoridation is an unreasonable risk. That is, the toxicity of fluoride is so great and the purported benefits associated with it are so small--if there are any at all--that requiring every man, woman and child in America to ingest it borders on criminal behaviour on the part of governments."
The FDA has to date never reviewed or approved any ingested fluoride product ever. The Claimed thousands of studies proving bnefit and safety were on sodium fluoride in double distilled deionized water only. The even uglier truth was shown in 2000 in the York review when they revealed of the 3200 studies they looked at not one was a class A bias unlikely. They were shocked only poor quality bias studies attempted to prove safety and benefit but did neither.
A different chemical is used 90% of the time and it comew from smokestake pollution scrubbers of phosphate factories. The EPA in 1970 ordered cattle and crops protected ftom downwind destruction buty the toxic brew could be used unpurified for city water. H2SiF6 or AWWA b703-06 has a specification sheet with 20 plus contaminates with arsenic and lead on top but most radioactive. Unmentioned to the public of dentists is the mines also produced up to 75% of the US yellowcake uranium until the last of 7 closed in Florida in 1998 after losing money. All the radioactivity is just left in the acid products or huge gypsum waste piles with multi football stadium sized cooling ponds on top. That is where the birds land in the radioactive sludge to disolve in the acid. Thats your fluoridation product. No agency in any country is foolish enough to even atempt to actually prove safety on this crap. In 2000 Calvert hearings the EPA admitted not a single emperical safety study .
Roseanne Colletti asked, "Just how much fluoride is optimum for kid's dental health?" According to the latest dental research, "optimal" only increases the risk for fluorosis, and "optimal" does nothing to prevent cavities.
"These findings suggest that achieving a caries-free status may have relatively little to do with fluoride intake, while fluorosis*is clearly more dependent on fluoride intake."........perhaps it is time that "the term optimal fluoride intake be dropped from common usage".
Swallowing fluoride to prevent cavities is like swallowing sunscreen to prevent sunburn. It doesn't work.
Its a scam in bottled-water and a 60 year old scam in municipal water. We've all been taken in by the greatest fraud of all time.
You should take the time to research the bottled water which you consume. Bottled water is a very loosly regulated industry and in many cases your tap water may be better than the bottled water you drink. I learned alot when reading the article on bottled water I found here: http://www.bawellwaterionizers.com/
"EPA UNIONS CALL FOR NATIONWIDE MORATORIUM ON FLUORIDATION, CONGRESSIONAL HEARING ON ADVERSE EFFECTS, YOUTH CANCER COVER UP "
The unions' letter is online at: http://nteu280.org/Issues/Fluoride/fluoridesummary.htm
______
This is your opportunity to back those 7000+ EPA union members that care about scientific integrity and exposing the truth about 'corporate hazardous waste fluorosilicates' being metered into our drinking waters. Their common sense demand for a 'moratorium on fluoridation' along with Congressional Investigation incl. 'under oath' hearings is critical!
We, the undersigned, join with members of eleven EPA unions in their call for an immediate Congressional act placing a national moratorium on water fluoridation pending a full Congressional investigation into this public policy, which affects - directly and indirectly - every resident of the United States.

"Parents in those locations should ask their dentists about fluoride supplements." Ms Colletti is seriously misinformed. No one needs fluoride -- ever! Fluoride is not a nutrient of any sort; it is a cumulative poison.
This idea of "optimum" fluoride is nonsense. Worse, it is scientific fraud on the part of the ADA.
Fluoride supplements and water fluoridation are contrary to fundamental medical principles:
* The Hippocratic oath -- First, do no harm. (Fluorosis IS health damage.)
* The principle of informed consent.
* Toxicology -- You won't get a toxicologist to defend fluoridation in public debate.
* Pharmacology -- You won't get a pharmacologist to defend fluoridation in public debate.
* Endocrinology -- Fluoride "is an endocrine disruptor", according to the National Research Council (2006). You won't get an endocrinologist to defend fluoridation in public debate.
By the way, tooth decay has one, and only one, cause: sugar. What could be simpler?
Fluoridation is entirely a lesson on informed consent. While it is true that fluoride is abundant in nearly every food and beverage we consume, it should NOT be artificially added to the drinking water.
I am sick of these types of articles that give this EPA-classified toxic chemical such a gleaming reputation as a tooth decay fighter. If you actually WANT to drink it, be my guest. For those that did some independent research on the issue, you would quickly join me and the millions of people that are against adding it to the water and try to lessen our total consumption by way of the food high in fluoride (hint, stay away from instant tea, grape juice, and mechanically deboned chicken!)
It's impossible to consume a fluoride-free diet and a fluoride-free diet would not cause cavities since fluoride is neither a nutrient nor essential for sound teeth.
Because fluoridated water is used to process many foods and because fluoride containing pesticides residues remain on food, the USDA published a fluoride-in-foods database so that you don't eat too much fluoride. Neither side of the fluoride "debate" disputes that too much fluoride ingestion can damage bones as well as teeth.
The Centers for Disease Control tells us that up to 48% of US school children are afflicted with fluoride overdose symptoms - dental fluorosis - white spotted, yellow, brown and/or pitted enamel. The CDC also tells us that fluoride does not reduce tooth decay systemically but topically which means there is no good reason to swallow fluoride whether from the tap or bottled. Yet tooth decay is rising in our most fluoridated population - toddlers. And UNtreated tooth decay is raising in almost every age group.
Both the ADA and CDC and many researchers advise that infant formula not be mixed with fluoridated water because it puts babies at increased risk of dental fluorosis with no benefits
NYC spent $24 million on fluoridation in 2008, alone. Yet cavity rates are among the highest in the nation. Non-fluoridated Long Island enjoys a lower cavity rate tNYC and most of NYS's fluoridated counties..
