American People Tired Of Being Hoodwinked

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

I was thinking recently about the movie "Wag The Dog" and the way politicians would invent a crisis for political gain, and then the fictitious crisis would become real. Has this happened to the republicans and George Bush? Have their false threats requiring war and their anti-regulation free market principals come back to haunt them?

In one approximately ten day period, John McCain has done a 360 degree turnabout. Initially, the economy was on a strong footing and fundamentally sound. Within a couple of days that same economy was facing "possibly the worst crisis since the Great Depression." The same George Bush that not long ago also felt our economy was doing well and had made great progress, was now speaking to the country trying to sell us yet another bill of goods. Did Bush just wag McCain?

Bush and Cheney have pulled this stunt many times. I remember being told to cover my house in plastic and duct tape to avoid anthrax. And did anyone notice that when Bush's poll numbers went down, we had an immediate raising of the threat level? By the way, what color is it now? They told us that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, and biological factories on trucks, anthrax in small planes and unmanned vehicles. That we would have the smoking gun come with a mushroom cloud. Saddam helped plan nine eleven and Al Queda was thick in Iraq. The path to peace ran through Baghdad. This list is too long to finish. That's how many lies we've been told.

Now, Bush/McCain have warned us of a looming financial disaster. It threatens our American way of life. Now, two weeks ago when McCain was polling well, our economy was fine. But this week, Obama forged ahead and that same economy is in crisis. Does this seem familiar? McCain must suspend his campaign and cancel Letterman and jet off to Katie Couric's studio. He got caught on tape. He must not attend a debate that could actually help the American people until this crisis is solved. So a dramatic meeting is called in the White House. An obvious photo op only.

So now, has the dynamic duo actually created so much panic on Wall Street, that there may actually be a crisis? Has their dog, whose tail they attempted to wag, come back to bite them in an uncomfortable place? I sincerely hope not. I remember those folks who lost everything with Enron and WorldCom. And I really hope we won't see these conditions again only because of a political ploy. What Bush, McCain and all too many in government fail to realize, is that there exists a very large groundswell among us common folk. And they would be wise to pay more attention to this movement than they did to the neo-con, democracy spreading, empirical big government ideology that led them to this place.

Joe Public is tired of being hosed! The chasm between the haves and have nots is wider than ever. These greedy Boss Tweed's have almost bled us dry. Trickle down economics may work according to them, but I don't know many who are getting wet. People are tired of the culture of greed and corruption that pervades government and high finance. Even the twenty four hour news channels have spent quite a bit of time covering "bonus day" in New York. This is the day the Wall Street firms hand out bonuses. The headline is always something like "millions change hands on bonus day." I remember when Michael Douglass said in the movie "Wall Street," that "greed is good!"

Blue collar workers in Pennsylvania, liberals in California, evangelical Christians and the good old boys down south usually don't agree on much. But they all agree unanimously that they don't like to be hoodwinked. There is a very pervasive attitude of impatience out there, and the days of lazy complacency may in fact be over.

So now, the old political dogs are huddled on Capitol Hill. All that disregard for the public may be coming back their way. So once again the president asks for the people's trust, but maybe that tired old dog will no longer hunt.

I love the title of this article. Maybe the answer is that we have in general become too dumbed down by six decades of television to know whether we are being hoodwinked or not. The Bailout seems like an obvious financial grab to me. As an entrepreneur, I know full well that there is no safety net or golden parachute for me; if I fail, I fail. I surely don't expect Uncle Sam or the Treasury to come and bail me out. I wouldn't think of it.
The fraternal link between Wall Street Financiers and the Neocons is so thick and incestuous, these guys can get what they want, and you? you will end up paying for it. The $85 billion for AIG? Assume there are 200 million Americans over 18: that is $425,OOO each! Where does that come from? I believe that is already a done deal, and the Bailout is ten times that amount.

Hoodwinked? You are being robbed, lock stock and barrel, and so are your children's unborn children. I say to hell with this bailout. Let them fall, collapse, and rot in hell. Just read Henry Paulsen's own resume to begin to understand how idiotic and illusory this BS really is. Fortunately, there are a few sharp Demos and even a few R's that aren't hoodwinked and aren't doing the hoodwinking. Regrettably, the fiscal leadership of America is too asleep at the wheel to even begin to analytically evaluate this mess, let alone the SOLUTION.

Sorry, my math was wrong. It is only $425 per each of 200 million Americans, but that is just for one corporation, an insurance company which, if it is like most insurance companies, fights tooth and nail to not pay any thing to the insured. Weasling out is what they do best, and now they have Washington cronies to help them weasle out $85 billion in the LARGEST FRAUD IN AMERICAN HISTORY!

stephen, well said. and i would add that corruption in the form of kickbacks, both monetary and sexual, also played their ugly part. my fear though is that this meltdown has been so hyped in both government and the media, that it has become real and may actually have to be bailed out.
