Watch I Am Congo -- Because We're Not in It

Posted: 05/ 1/2012 8:49 am

On our second trip together to Africa last Thanksgiving, we decided to go to the place where the deadliest war in the world was occurring: the Congo. The entire time we were there, we traveled with an extraordinary Congolese guy named Fidel Bafilemba. His video profile is the first in a new video series being launched by the Enough Project, called I Am Congo.

Most of the stories we hear about Congo are of rape, conflict, and exploitation. Those stories are real and we saw plenty of evidence of them.

But that's not the whole story of Congo. Watching our friend Fidel's video profile helps expand the story of Congo beyond its pain, and highlights what Congolese people all over are doing to create a better future for their country.

Fidel symbolizes the complexities and potential of Congo. He was formerly a member of a militia, but now he is a human rights activist and community organizer. Hanging with him is like being with a walking, talking encyclopedia of knowledge of history, culture, politics, and people. He speaks 13 languages. In the midst of all the difficulties, Fidel is a snappy dresser, he loves pizza, and he is a devoted family man. He has a great talent for quips, and a quick smile. He also shows deep compassion, and amazing grace under pressure. Just like Congo.

One of our favorite features of this video is that we're not in it.

After you learn a little about Fidel, there are other profiles of courageous Congolese living their lives and standing up for what they believe in. We hope you'll take the time to watch these profiles and get to know Congo and its people a little better. Our time getting to know Congolese people deeply affected us, and we hope the same will be true for you.

Watch the new I Am Congo video series
-- because Congolese faces and voices are front and center in it.

Ryan Gosling is an actor. John Prendergast is a co-founder of the Enough Project and author of "Unlikely Brothers."

WAU! So much opposition, when he is trying to get out a good message. Mr. Gosseling, when people critic you so harshly, what that really means, is that you are on the right track. If you did something truly wrong, then you would get a bunch of support.
Strangely, I am AMAZED by such a authentic interest by a silly actor! This is such a great take and insight. Americans humbly exploring the world without the we-know-it-best approach is the way out of spreading war like candy.
My prediction: The Mr. Gosseling will get into politics. As he is growing up to be a man his mind and soul is shifting his interest from how do l look on TV to how is the world and my country doing and how can I contribute. There is some sort of shift in this soon to be man (how old is he again?) He will crash against lots of closed doors, will be smeared, ridiculed and hated, but he will be the hope for the weak, the poor, his people and be loved and supported and respected by humans with souls. He got two choices embrace the live of opposition to his drive to make a true change or stick with the shallow look-at-me acting drain my soul until l kill myself crowd. The Gosseling is headed towards politics!!! God bless you.

Yes, it's a terrible situation in the Congo. Agreed. But you know what? When Americans (white male Americans in particular) go to Africa to "find their cause" it makes me barf. There are so many suffering right here at home that ya'll don't need to go that far. Oh, I see... if you take up a cause here in the States it's too in-your-face and might be something you have to take a far more active responsibility for. Sure, I get it. So... Hooray! You found the Congo! Look at those poor schmucks! Gosh, I feel bad for them. Yep, I sure do. Rrrrr...

Prendergast did a lot of work here in the US in the 80's and Gosling is Canadian. Poor you...get your facts straight before spewing your nonsense. Child soldiers are schmucks? Really? Are you out on the front lines of American poverty, doing all that you can? So much so, that you type such nasty things so righteously. Come on.

You lost me. Why are do you barf when white male Americans go to Africa but not women or minorities?

BTW, some of us consider ourselves citizens of the world. I don't feel that Americans are any more entitled to my help than Africans. I'm sure you still disdain me, just letting you know why many of us choose to help Africans.

After years of exploitation, the Congolese People are beginning to undo the shackle of oppression and corruption. They seem to be on the road to recovery, and I applaud that.
The worlds' humanitarian orgs will probably provide minimal assistance. The Congolese don't need much to turn it around.
Just keep groups like The Fellowship out! You already see the results of their "christian" influence in Uganda!
They are doing what is practiced in war and conquest - only in reverse!
The Fellowship comes in with religion, causing militancy against what or whom they believe to be their bogeyman. Then comes corporate interests, to exploit the land and its people!
Do NOT let them gain a foothold!

Does anyone remember the Rumble in the Jungle? Talk about connecting with the people of the Congo! ho are Gosling and Pendergast anyway?

My heart connects to the aim here and my sensibilities appreciate the campaign. It will help to foster respect for American presence within the Congo and keep Americans thinking about them... not as pet projects but people who have lives, interests, accomplishments. In this manner, they become friends, instead of faceless charity. Lovely decision - especially after the Kony 2012 fiascle.

Thank-you.

I think you... Mr. Prendergast and Gosling ... are rock stars. Separately and together.

you are so correct! But I do not think they are rock stars. One of them l do not know myself, but the other one was at a few movie events I was invited to and people said he is like a famous actor. In fact, I spoke with him very briefly and he seemed sweet soul.

Thanks for your comment Teresiya. :) But the rockstar comment was not meant to be taken literally lol, it's something I say about people who continue where others stop.

Looking very much forward to watching. Thanks for the tip.

This is a great article. Ryan is a wonderful man. It is nice of the authors to show the bright side of the situation in Congo. People that do not have the opportunity to travel are often bombarded with all the negativity of the situation in the news. Good works are often overshadowed by the bad ones. Kudos.

What about other handsome-actor-turned -social-activist, Ben Affleck, whose main HP's article addressed the same subject, BUT that we are NOT nor should we be expected to be the saviors of Africa?

Okay, okay, I'll watch it even though you aren't in it, Ryan, but only on the condition you have at least one shirtless scene in the sequel to "Drive."

This is a deeply moving video. I am always so glad to see people who have become very successful, such as Gosling, taking time to use some of their wealth and influence to support the downtrodden of this planet. Mr Fidel is an absolute wonder, and the world needs dozens of his clones.
