The Most Vegan-Friendly Colleges

Posted: 10/11/11 11:09 AM ET

peta2 -- the student wing of PETA -- has released its annual list of the Most Vegan-Friendly Colleges.

According to a study by food-service provider Bon Appétit, the number of college students who identify themselves as vegetarian has risen by 50 percent since 2005, and the number of vegan students has more than doubled during the same period. This has resulted in a dramatic increase in the variety of vegan foods available -- many of which didn't even exist five years ago.

From the sweet and sour vegan meatballs at the University of California-Irvine to the vegan gyros at Georgetown to the dairy-free pumpkin cheesecake at Brown, students are gobbling up vegan meals like never before. To view the full list of this year's nominees and vote for your favorites, visit peta2.com/VeganColleges.

With a vibrant streak of progressive activism dating back several decades, Brandeis students are known for setting the bar high and waging high-profile campaigns when their demands aren't met. Thankfully for the campus chefs, though, vegan food is one area where students have nothing but kind words. With popular dining choices like in-house vegan brownies, vegan spaghetti and meatballs, barbecue veggie riblets, and vegan beef tacos, it's easy to see where students get their energy.

What? No Humboldt State? How did that happen? They've had vegan comestibles since at least 1998.

Did you read about Wesleyan's own organic farming of foods? They also try to buy locally.
