Howard Dean For HHS

Tom Daschle's withdrawal leaves an opening at Health and Human Services. Howard Dean is the man for that job.

Dean isn't given enough credit for his expert chairmanship of the Democratic National Committee. His "50 State Strategy" is as responsible for Obama's large victory in 2008 as any other factor. Not to mention the 2006 congressional gains. He rebuilt the grass roots of the Democratic Party from the ground up, organizing a whole generation of young leaders.

His record as a five-term governor of Vermont is strong, including providing near-universal heath coverage. During his gubernatorial reelection bid, he had to wear a bulletproof vest because of death threats he'd received due to his support for gay civil unions.

Personally, Dean inspired me enough in 2003 that I moved to Vermont to work for him. He was one of the early voices of reason (followed by Gore and Obama) in the Democratic Party, opposing the war in Iraq. His 2004 campaign's use of the Internet changed the face of American politics forever.

Dean, also a medical doctor, would be an inspired choice for secretary of Health and Human Services. His knowledge of the issues plus his openness to innovation make him uniquely qualified. Join us on Facebook in support of the good Doctor!

Not going to happen. Dean would demand REAL CHANGE. The Obama administration isn't going to go that far--it might anger the Republicans.

Yess! If Obama can make up with HRC for the sake of the country, why can't Rahm Emanuel do the same thing with Dr. Dean?

Rahm Emanuel notwithstanding, why is it that Obama can reach out for Republicans but can't reach out for Howard Dean???

If you feel so inclined (as I did) --

-- then please post a comment -- on the Organizing for America (the former Obama for America) blog -- that you are in favor of requesting President Obama to select Howard Dean to be nominated for HHS secretary.

I really like Dean, and give him all props for his work in '06 and '08. His 50 state strategy, which he pushed against great opposition from the old guard, paved the way for Obama's victory.

And yes, he did great things for health care in tiny Vermont, where he was the boss.

But I honestly doubt that he has the temperament for this exceptionally difficult job - more like herding cats than anything else I can think of. He's a lot like Hillary in that regard - competitive, combatative, and dogged - and I'm afraid things would turn out like they did when she took a swipe at the problem.

It's too bad about Daschle, because he did have both the temperament and the requisite knowledge base.

One solution might be to make it a two person job, like they have in business partnerships: with an inside guy (or gal) and an outside guy (or gal). The inside guy would do the "devil in the details" work; the outside guy would be the consensus builder and salesperson for the new plan.
Maybe this job is so big that they need

Dr Dean, despite Rahm's opinion of him, is worth considering for HHS or Surgeon General if Dr Gupta isn't available. Dr Dean wouldn't be a folksy, bearded, Dr Koop. Pres Obama could do worse. Pres Obama is having a lousy February so far.

Why do you think Dean is second to Gupta?

Dean is an inspirational leader with a magic track record. The problem is between Dean and Rahm Emanuel. Imagine if Dean had been given the Chief of Staff job. The Obama administration would look very different. Rahm Emanuel is a product of the DLC, the right-leaning movement launched in the late 1980s by Bill Clinton, James Carville and their pro-Israel money-men, Al From and Rahm Emanuel. Howard Dean is the darling of the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, and they just elected Obama. In 2006, Emanuel discarded scores of antiwar progressives when he was chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee to replace them with neocon Dems. Frequently described as abrasive, obnoxious, profane and an irritating knuckle-cracker who attracted Obama's ire when he loudly and proudly cracked his knuckles in a high-level meeting during the transition, Emanuel is the top-ranking operative for the staunchly pro-Israel-right-leaning lobby inside the Democratic Party at the DLC. Emanuel worked on the Oslo Accords -- which crumbled into the recent Gaza War. Dean would press for progressive change across a broad spectrum, but he is looking forward to a high-paying career writing books and making speeches. I doubt that he would be interested in serving as a factotum to Rahm Emanuel.

Dean will do nothing other than damage in bipartisian efforts. If that is what you think is good and beneficial to the American people, then appoint a way. If you want progress on health insurance for people, don't appoint Dean.

Having republican input on healthcare is against progress. I'll take Dean over republican policy dictated by health insurance companies any day. We don't need to listen to republicans anymore. They've destroyed this country enough already.

Do you actually believe that some of the republicans will pass universal health care if Obama continues to make concessions. Look at the stimulus bill. Sure, there are earmarks that doesn't deserve to be there. However, republicans are trying to push for an even massive set of tax-cuts in the stimulus bill even after the failure of the Bush Administration.

If Hillary Clinton can be secretary of state then why can't Dean be the Secretary of HHSD.

YES Dean for HHS!

Howard Dean would fight for National Health Care for "we the people" & NOT shill for the "Corporate Health Care INDUSTRY!"

President Obama we need an advocate for the PEOPLE not the INDUSTRY!

I have the feeling that the Obama administration is not interested in meaningful Heal Care Reform.
The plan he offered on the campaign trail was at best tinkering around the edges. It would leave the big
predatory players in power and subsidized positions. That is the reasons that three excellent picks
Howard Dean, Rep. Jim McDermot of Wa. and Dennis Kucinich of OH.
have been pointedly snubbed. Unless we the people who overwhelmingly favor Single Payer Health coverage ala HR 676 get active we'll get a watered down compormise, byepartisan piece of tripe that will be paid for by those big predatory players.

We do need to remember that Obama had the weakest health care reform proposals of all the Democrats who ran.
