Killing RENT -- Behind the Times and Beyond the Pale

Fal Asrani, the principal of Corona del Mar High School in Newport Beach, Calif., either doesn't like gay people or is an extremely slow reader.

The school was scheduled to perform "Rent," a Pulitzer- and Tony Award-winning rock musical (and, arguably, the only culturally relevant musical produced on Broadway in the '90s), as its spring show. Asrani, apparently a huge fan of censorship, wanted approval over the script -- already gutted for the high school edition -- but needed more than a month to review.

Even so, she had already made her decision on the show, according to drama instructor Ron Martin -- "she had already told me that she would not let it proceed because of the homosexuality in it."

Asrani has begun backpedaling, claiming that Martin canceled the show himself and that gay people deserve the same respect as straight people. But her actions clearly reflect her bigotry and ignorance. "Rent" is an important show, and the students should be exposed to its universal themes of love, friendship and tolerance. Asrani, for her part, needs to see this show more than anyone in California.

"Rent" was a huge part of my high school experience; I went to see a national tour in Washington with a local public high school in Maryland in 1998. That was 11 years ago. Just how behind the times in Asrani? A pretty pathetic story -- and one you'd expect out of Alabama, not California.

Ms Asrani has created an atmosphere at our high school where kids have no civil rights, period, so none of this is a big surprise. People are afraid to speak up because of what she can do to retaliate. The School District should take this very seriously and investigate beyond this issue.

#1: RENT is amazing. I've seen it on Broadway, when the final show was recorded I saw it at the movies, and I just bought tickets to see the tour when it comes to DC in May.
#2: Being a high school teacher, I think RENT has a powerful message about acceptance and respect of human life that many high school students would benefit from hearing. I know the original is too risque for high school productions, but even a watered down version that carries the message of friendship, acceptance and respect for all human life would be a benefit for any community. Regardless of the Principal's reasons, I think it's a disappointing mistake to not allow the story of RENT to be shared.

The principal already canceled the show without reading the play. Why would she do that? We can assume she knew there were gay characters in it, because according to the drama teacher she canceled the show because of the homosexuality content. She then told a local paper that it was the drama teacher who canceled the show due to time restraints, but that's not true. That's libel. She's an insensitive ignoramus, plain and simple.

Hey dude, maybe you should read the whole story before insulting the principal. Apparently she never even got a copy of the script to review. I like the way she asks for the script, doesn't get it, and says it will never go into production anyway. That makes perfect sense.

I've never seen it except in the movie format, which I'm sure caused some losses.... It was STILL one of the most powerful stories I've ever seen! I shudder to think about how dumbed down it was just to make it into the high school drama list of acceptable programs, and then this woman denied even THAT?????????
