Salim S. Abdool Karim, MBChB, PhD is director of Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA) and served as co-principal investigator of the the recently completed CAPRISA 004 tenofovir gel trial which provided proof of concept for microbicides in HIV prevention. Dr. Abdool Karim is also chair of the Scientific and Technical Advisory Group for Reproductive Health at the World Health Organization, a member of the UNAIDS Prevention Reference Group, a steering committee member of the Gates Foundation’s Global HIV Prevention Working Group and an executive committee member of the National Institute of Health-funded Microbicide Trials Network. Dr. Abdool Karim has published extensively on infectious diseases and co-edited the textbook widely used to teach epidemiology in South Africa. In 2009, he was awarded the TWAS Prize in Medical Sciences and is co-inventor on three patents, two of which have been included in candidate HIV vaccines.
