Mrs. Wan has a B.A. in Zoology from Vassar College, an M.S. in Zoology from Yale University, and an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, Irvine. She and her husband live in Malibu. She has been a life-long environmental activist. She was appointed to the California Coastal Commission in January of 1996 and is currently the longest serving Commissioner. She also sits on the Boards of the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy and the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Commission and has served on the California Coastal Conservancy Board. Mrs. Wan was appointed to the Federal Advisory Committee to the Marine Mammal Commission on the Effects of Sound on Marine Mammals in 2004, where she represented the State of California and was the only State representative on this committee. She is co-founder, with her husband, Dr. Lawrence A Wan, of the Western Alliance for Nature, a land conservancy. On May 23rd of this year the Wan Conservancy organized and sponsored Save the Whales Day, which included 16 protest rallies along the Coast of California, one in every coastal county.
