15 Naturally Gluten-Free Desserts

Posted: 04/19/2011 10:45 am

Most cookies and cakes, which are often made with wheat, must be avoided by those wishing to remove gluten from their diet. Fortunately, there are plenty of naturally gluten-free desserts to enjoy without having to buy expensive flour substitutes and mixes. Here are 15 of our favorite flourless sweets from around the world. Because there is no flour to be leavened, most are also perfect for Passover. With gorgeous treats like these, we promise that none of your guests will notice that anything is missing.

Macaroons

I'm not Jewish, and don't know what is or isn't kosher, but I wonder if foods containing gelatin would qualify since it is an animal product....

Thanks to all your comments, we've replaced the ovaltine pudding recipe in this gallery with a decadent flourless chocolate cake recipe which is 100% gluten-free. If you'd still like to make our ovaltine pudding, a gluten-free version can be made by substituting cocoa powder for ovaltine, and using a gluten-free crispy rice cereal for the topping. For more naturally gluten-free desserts, see http://www.saveur.com/article/-/Gluten-Free-Dessert-Recipes. Enjoy!

The article is about recipes that are flourless. I don't see it making any health claims for ice cream or any of the other desserts shown. Anyway wheat IS bad for people who have celiac disease or gluten-intolerance, which is why some people want to eliminate it from their diet (and they have to eliminate rye and barley, too). Why do you find that so funny? Even if people aren't trying to avoid wheat because of health problems it can cause, they may be looking for flourless recipes for Passover, which is a subsidiary point made by the article.

I'm loving the oranges filled with orange sorbet. I'm totally stealing that idea for the summer.

Ovaltine contains malt which has gluten!

A gluten-free lemon-lime cheesecake might also fit the bill since the crust lacks yeast-based leavening. http://bit.ly/dMlUmp

Ovaltine is NOT gluten free! Although, the Rich Chocolate Ovaltine does not contain malt as the regular Ovaltine does, these products are processed on machines that are exposed to gluten ingredients! Those of us with Celiac disease cannot ingest any amount of gluten whatsoever. PLEASE ADVISE...OVALTINE IS NOT GLUTEN FREE!

Wish I had know what gluten was years ago. Wheat, barley, rye, oats -- some will argue about the oats, but my body won't. They can exhaust you with a host of other ailments. Here's to gluten free desserts! Writingbleep.com

These look good, but Ovaltine is not gluten free. NOTHING with malt is gluten free. Please check before giving out mis-labeled recipes!
