The Hollywood Foreign Press announced the nominees for the 2016 Golden Globes.
There were many surprises and welcome nominations, as well as some shocking snubs.
Sylvester Stallone was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for reprising the role of Rocky Balboa in the box office smash and critically acclaimed film Creed. Stallone was previously nominated for the character as Best Actor for the original 1976 Rocky.
Mad Max: Fury Road continues it’s surprising contention in the Awards Season race after being named The National Board of Review’s 2015 Best Film of the Year. With its Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture Drama, the film is now a true contender for a possible Academy Award Best Picture nomination. The film’s director, George Miller (he directed all three of the original Mad Max trilogy films as well), was also nominated.
Some surprising snubs shocked some fans as well.
Despite a SAG nomination, Black Mass actor Johnny Depp was snubbed for a Best Actor Golden Globe nomination. Tom Hardy, thought to be a sure nominee for either Legend or The Revenant, was also snubbed. Straight Outta Compton, the box office and critically heralded hit, was also left out of the mix for a possible Best Motion Picture nomination.
Spotlight, one of the most critically heralded films of the year thus far, was shunned in the acting categories. No nominations despite solid performances by Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo (he WAS nominated for the otherwise forgotten Infinitely Polar Bear), Rachel McAdams, and John Slattery.
What shocked many was two The Big Short actors -- Christian Bale and Steve Carrell -- nabbing two coveted Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy spots.
It should be noted that curiously, The Martian was nominated as a Musical or Comedy Best Motion Picture.
On the television front, The Walking Dead was shunned once again. Even more surprising was the absence of Homeland, which has had one of its most powerful seasons and was recently well represented in the SAG nominations. Not even Golden Globe-winning Clair Daines was nominated for the show.
Mr. Robot was a welcome addition, but certainly no surprise given the success of the show. And it’s nice to finally see that Golden Globe nominee for Best Performance in a Supporting Role Christian Slater has finally found success on television after a handful of failed previous attempts.
