Hillary, War with Iran is No Laughing Matter

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

Hillary, I'm glad to see you got a good laugh when I confronted you during last week's debate over your vote calling the Iranian Revolutionary Guard (IRG) a terrorist organization. The American public finally got to see your cavalier attitude toward our march to war. Your vote however is no laughing matter.

By labeling the IRG a terrorist organization, the Democratic-controlled congress has impeded our ability to negotiate with a huge portion of the Iranian government. The IRG is a 125,000-person organization with ties to every power base in Iran. The IRG is also admired by a vast potion of the Iranian people for its heroic stand against Saddam Hussein's invasion during the Iran-Iraq War. Mohammad Khatami, the former reformist president of Iran, warned the United States not to label the IRG a terrorist organization because doing so would preclude any diplomatic settlement of our differences.

While I'm sure your vote plays well with the hawks and military contractors who support your campaign, it is the height of irresponsibility. Like with Iraq in 2002, elements in our government have already decided to attack Iran and are now trying to "sell it." Last week, Congress gave the warmongers a big gift. (Note to Congressional Dems: You were elected to stop a war, not start a new one!)

Hillary, war with Iran will have devastating consequences for all Americans.

The Iranians are sure to respond with strikes at Americans at home and abroad. Imagine a dozen 9/11s. Is that something to laugh about?

The Iranian navy will intercept oil shipments through the Persian Gulf that fuel the European economies. Oil prices will skyrocket above $150 and the global economy will fall into a worldwide depression. Will you be amused when millions of Americans lose their jobs?

Will you chuckle when the Shiites in Saudi Arabia and the other oil states rise up and destabilize our allies in the Persian Gulf?

A war with Iran will not be contained. It's easy to imagine a "Guns of August" scenario that draws in Israel, Saudi Arabia and potentially Pakistan, India, Russia, and China. Hillary, a potential Third World War is no crackpot fantasy, and it's no joke.

Based on the questions during Wednesday's presidential debate, I suspect the mainstream media isn't interested in a serious discussion about this impending crisis. Tim Russert's questions had us spending more time on smoking, teenage drinking and Red Sox versus Yankees than on Iran. But this crisis is real and it's time to take it seriously before it's too late.

MG, thanks for being the only guy who tells it like it is even as they limit your debate time.

In a grave new world ruled by lies and liars, you are the voice of reason for we the people.

Don't ever lose your honesty. It shows you can't be bought and you know the real score.

Yes, we've had seven years of one Bush, eight of Clinton, four more of the other Bush, plus another eight of the other Bush as VP. Aside from the four years of Carter, you can add on more years before that if you think of Cheney entrenched on the White House staff before that. Welcome back to Vietnam, when the war was always about to end, the puppet government was always close to taking over the military aspect, and just one more spending bill would be needed. Let's not just think of the family names Bush and Cheney; this shit been going on for decades.

I don't agree that Hillary is a cc of Bush. Far from it. When questioned about her vote to label the Iranian Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization, however, her glib response to an important and critical question was inexcusable. Does she not learn from her past mistakes or is she so worried about pleasing her narrowing consituency that she'll say anything to please them?

Mr. Gravel, great great post.

Why should she be anything but glib when she has already been declared the winner of the next election? She's just biding her time, picking out new drapes for the oval office and trying to keep Bill from groping a nationwide pool of enthusiastic volunteers. LOL

Let's try something different for once!

Maybe we'll even get Obama on the Unity ticket, if he can refuse the 2nd place trophy of VP sure to be offered by Hill.

The IRG's goose was cooked when they dared call themselves the Qods Force. Qods of course means Jerusalem in Iranian, as does Quds in Arabic.

Would the regime now occupying Jerusalem tolerate an Iranian organization called "The Jerusalem Force", even if it were made up of volunteers for the Salvation Army?

Bombs away!

This entire pretense of democracy is depressing as can be. We have idly sat by for at least the last 40 years while our system of government has become one in which -- with a few token exceptions -- only the corrupt and despotic need apply. And I know what the "common wisdom" -- there's an oxymoron -- says, but I have to disagree. Absolute power does not corrupt absolutely. Only the absolutely corrupt seek absolute power. How can I be so sure of this? If absolute power corrupted absolutely, every mother would torture their children to the point of death. Mothers have absolute power over their infant children. Yet very few mothers become sadistic, corrupt fiends. Jimmy Carter seems to have survived his brush with the power of the Presidency without becoming a colossal jerk. I could go on, but I'm already bored and depressed enough by this.

My point? What do you do when you realize the game is rigged, and there is nothing you can do to change the outcome? Do you just give up? I will toss out some Camus here for you.

"The struggle itself toward the heights is enough to fill a man's heart. One must imagine Sisyphus happy."

So, knowing that at best you would be ignored completely, but more likely would be openly ridiculed and possibly ruined financially, would any of you undertake the effort to become President, and put our country back on the foundation Franklin, Jefferson, Washington, et al, built?

Franklin, Jefferson, and Washington would vomit upon witnessing the bloated, corrupt, monster the federal government has become. I doubt there is more than a handful of readers of this forum that would not support extending it's almost god like powers even farther. Of course, it's always in the name of "the children", or "the disadvantaged", etc... The constitutional federalism visualized by the founders is long dead, and extremely unlikely to ever return.

not to mention the fact that congress has already empowered the resident to persue "terrorists" wherever he presumes them to be. That would now include iran.

You Americans have yourselves blocked in with two identical political parties. The money. The corruption. The immorality. You guys have squandered a great country. And for what? Democracy is supposed to be so great, but can't you see that it can and is high jacked to the guys with the money. It is a myth. They buy it and then they spend it like there is no tomorrow. You guys are suckers. They are the Carneys. You know the " there is a sucker born every minute crowed. They play you. They are in for the kill. You are in for morality. they have no such delusions, they are in for the kill.

But that is the definition of democracy. The genius has the same vote as the moron. Mediocrity (at best) is guaranteed from the get go.

Notice not a peep from Hillary, Bill or her campaign about the Kyl/Lieberman vote, they know it was a HUGE BLUNDER, and will end her campaign. They want some other story to take all the oxygen and then it goes away. Senator Gravel for your courage ending the draft, ending Viet Nam, and continuing to be a pain in the ass to presumed front runners in the Democratic Party...the country owes you more than you can ever be rewarded. KEEP FIGHTING!

Indeed. The so-called frontrunners should be running on the front, and not standing behind podiums, but as long as they are, we need someone to stay in the race and call them on their sick BS!

Even if you can't win, we need someone to be there next to them. Our conscience needs to be on those stages. This is not about elections, it's about what we are doing now!

Thank you for your commitment.

Agreed. Keep it up Sen. Gravel! You are the voice of reason in this race. All they can do is try to marginalize you, because your positions on the issues are un-attackable. Their positions have been indefensable, and they're hoping no one would notice. You are speaking for the majority of America - get us out of Iraq and don't go into Iran. Your voice is our voice, so thank you for making us heard.

The White House is now drawing up plans for Iran right now.
Sy Hersh just reported there is movement just like with Iraq.
I have never trusted and never will Hillary Clinton. She is simply an opportunist who cares only about achieving power and not about this country or the people.
She is Bush all over again.
when will the people admit that this Bush Clinton merry go round is destructive to the country and that having only 2 families, the worst there are in politics, running our country exclusively goes against everything this country stands for.
And while the media gushes all over the clintons with their obsession for them, our country is marching into the abyss.

I'm not sure that Hillary isn't onto something with Her chuckling over all these made-up issues that the Neo-Cons want us to take so seriously.Despite all the misery they have wrought on this country--their accomplishments{tsk-tsk}have been LAUGHABLE! It's time someone laughed at them!!!

Um, what's wrong with them? Only 22 senators, including two Republicans, voted against war with Iran,

The war drums roll as the US teeters towards yet more folly. Coupled with Israel's determination to strike at the head of the proverbial snake -Iran and/or Syria- as opposed to a proxies like Hezbollah, this will culminate in WW's 4,5 and 6 (the 3rd was the Cold War).
Sadly enough, the same johnny-come-latelies that now admit Operation Iraqi Freedom was shortsighted with hubris and greed now drink the same kool-aid with Iran.
Evil Dictator! WMD's! Oh MY!
As if any Iran invasion could happen without a draft. Wonder why child obestity has been such an issue during the Bush regime? He's knows the score (after a mono-syllabic explanation from Condi natch).
It IS all about the kids after all! They'll HAVE to be in shape... for Operation Iranian Freedom...Operation Syrian Freedom...operation Pakistani Freedom...
