Arlen Specter's Impact on Al Franken

{First, a cheap plug for my blog Senate Guru.}

Before Arlen Specter's Party switch announcement yesterday, the Senate's Democratic caucus stood at 58 members. Senator-elect Al Franken represented Democrats' 59th vote toward cloture, still short of reliably ending Republican filibusters. But now, with Specter joining the Democratic caucus, Senator-elect Franken represents the big 6-0, which is why Republicans will redouble their efforts to delay Senator-elect Franken's seating - and why we in the netroots must redouble our efforts to send obstructionist Republicans a message and also provide them with adequate disincentive from delaying Senator-elect Franken's seating any further.

NormDollar.comSince the "One Dollar a Day to Make Norm Coleman Go Away" effort started just a couple weeks ago, about $40,000 has been raised to remind the Republicans funding Norm Coleman's endless appeals that, for every single day that they delay the implementation of the will of Minnesota voters, progressive voters will raise money to use against these Republicans on Election Day 2010.

Your support will strengthen that message!
Norm Coleman and his fellow Republicans recently scored a success in further delaying Senator-elect Franken's seating, as the trial schedule adopted by the state Supreme Court for Coleman's appeal is such that oral arguments before the Court won't begin until June 1st, over a month from now. Further, although Minnesota election policy dictates that Republican Gov. Tim Pawlenty must prepare and sign Senator-elect Franken's election certificate once the state Supreme Court hands down its decision, Pawlenty has hemmed and hawed as to whether he would follow state election policy accordingly.

With a D next to Arlen Specter's name, Republicans will go full force to block Senator-elect Franken's seating. Please join us in eliminating Republicans' incentive to delay Senator-elect Franken's seating any further by taking part in the "One Dollar a Day to Make Norm Coleman Go Away" effort. Above at right is video of the segment on MSNBC's Hardball highlighting the effort.

Who would have guessed that Specter would be a Democratic Senator before Al Franken?

Specter is a democrat in name only. Politically he's still a republicanderthal.

The Decision the Election Contest Court handed down is bullet proof. The ECC trio unanimously agreed Coleman proved nothing and said so. Making sure that Coleman isn't looked upon favorably; the trio wrote about the attempted deceit and trickery that Coleman tried when presenting his case. They mentioned that witnesses were "Less than convincing" and took time to be quite critical of the Coleman "Star witness" who, the evidence shows, was guilty of collusion, withholding of evidence and illegally communicating with Coleman during the Trial. They were polite, but harsh with their language. They did not actually write: "This pitiful and shameless example of partisan obstructionism is not worthy of our time and comments to dismiss it, with Prejudice." They did write, with just enough venom in their ink, to show they didn’t appreciate the frivolous waste of time and energy Coleman used to prove nothing to anger The Court into a possible situation that might be used for appeal. Then, they went about dismantling each and every single one of Coleman arguments and removed any doubt a Higher Court could construe as good reason to overrule their opinion.
Coleman brings to Minnesota’s Supreme Court the most outrageous example of appealing a Lower Court’s Decision, which has ever been done. This appeal to the MSC proves, beyond any reasonable doubt, that Coleman and the GOP are without shame, are willingly defying their Oaths to protect the Constitution, and don't care who is watching as they flagrantly assault Democracy!

Well said.

Of course, they no long care who is "watching" their debauchery, nor hiding their abusive behavior from the public any longer. They are no longer need their phony persona as "loyal American" played the last 8 years; they got caught! We've striped back the veneer and we know what they are...

Now, they are all about shooting bile into the public veins as fast as politically, economically, and socially possible...they just don't care. They just don't care...that's the key...they just don't care...

Why do these (Rethugs) people get to pick and choose with laws they will and will not abide by. In 2000 they made or should I say "ASKED" Gore to step aside "For the GOOD of the Country". Why isn't anyone doing the same here? These Narsistic, Control FREAKS are really starting to PISS ME OFF with this Childishness.

What can WE do to stop them? They need to realize that the world does not revovle around their wants and needs. They were ELECTED to have their CONSTITUATES (?) best interest at heart not there own.

They know that God is on their side. With that knowledge, they feel that they can do whatever is necessary, that no level of deceit or dishonor is shameful, because they are serving a greater purpose.

They may think that God is on their side, but God does not condone wrong-doing for ANY reason. There can be no justification for engaging in wrong behavior.

The Republican party is the new Keystone Cops. They can't get anything right and they won't prevail in Minnesota. They can't justify their negativity and the harder they dig, the further they dig themselves into a bigger hole. Franken is smart enough to get out of their way.

Specter is a genius politician. The Dems were going to put up a seriously viable candidate to oppose him in the general election. The Republicans have put up a right wing conservative to "oppose" Specter in the primary. Now, with Specter as a Dem, the people of Pennsylvania will have a moderate Republican (Specter) and a right wing Republican to choose from in the general election. And the Dems are happy he switched? Where is Specter's support for Obama's nominees?
05:04 PM on 04/29/2009
In your dreams. We're putting up a real Democrat come 2010 and pull the rug out from Specter. It's a Democratic Generation, Babeeeeeeee :)

No Democrat will run against Specter, especially since President Obama and Vice President Biden will both campaign for him, so it's you who is dreaming.

$ Trillions in siphoning to America's oligarchy ride on the Senate filibusters. So, Pawlenty is under huge pressure to stall or even break Minnesota's election laws outright by refusing to cert, even with an inevitable Franken win in the Minnesota SC So, Pawlenty needs advance notice that beaucoux netroots bux will go toward his early retirement, should he not "do the right thing". We also need more netroots "ask and tell" pressure to "out" tax evaders with secret accounts at Phil Gramm's Swiss UBS Bank and off-shore havens. Globally freezing such accounts would stifle a lot of GOP chicanery.

Wrong emphasis. Specter's decision should not be bound up with Senator-elect Franken's. The Republican decision to dis-enfranchise Minnesota votes needs to stop. Every Democrat needs to make it clear that mixing the two situations together is an "apples and oranges" situation.

The punishment the right is issuing here is on the people of Minnesota and not Al Franken and that case needs to be clear. That's why I've sent money to Al Franken's cause several times.
05:23 PM on 04/29/2009
It's not an apples-to-oranges situation. Senators are more or less fungible.
04:25 PM on 04/29/2009
Story is based on assumption that Specter will go along with Dems and vote for cloture, but he says he won't necessarily do that. He's doing what he has done all his life, use others to boost his own career. Specter is a cypher who cannot be counted on and he's a liability to the Democrats, not an asset. He's going to be in his own party whether he has a D or an R next to his name, Hope for some other Reps to jump ship. Maybe the Mainiacs.
04:11 PM on 04/29/2009
I'm not ruling out another Republican jumping off a sinking ship.

Coleman has already proven that he could care less about what his constiuents think, so with that said he is going to do everything in his power to slow up the seating of Franken especialy now that Specter has switched up.Granted Specctor is a blue dog...that is still one step closer to Dem control

That way, they need never speak again..

Seems to be eliminating the filibuster is a much more straightforward, timely and sensible approach. Besides, getting 60 Senators with a D beside their name doesn't get us all that far when too many of them are clearly DINOs.

The whole thing is BS...sixty is a completely arbitrary number that can be easily changed by Reid changing the rules. They all know it - they just don't want YOU to know it. That would be one less scapegoat to use when they really aren't behind a bill anyway. Reid and Pelosi are worthless.

Keep in mind that these two were totally ineffective during Bush 43, and only have ANY presence now because Obama took the presidency. Agitate for real progressives so that this country starts moving in the right (left!) direction.

Check out radio host Thom Hartmann (radio station KPOJ in Oregon), who often speaks very clearly on Reid and Pelosi's pathetic "leadership". Thom is a liberal progressive whose program is also carried on AirAmerica.

He is the single most informative talk show host in America, doesn't waste his time in ad hominem attacks, and invites guests on daily who disagree with him. If you'd like to hear civil debate on issues, he sets the standard for radio. He'll clear up a lot of questions quickly for you.

Reaid cannot change the rules. Only the full Senate can change the rules. The rules can be changed by a majority vote. That vote can be blocked by filibuster. So you need 60 votes to change the 60 votes number. It won't happen.

I immediately thought of this. Boy, if you thought Republicans were going to try and obstruct Al from taking his Senate seat *before*, they're really going to go all out now to keep him out now.

If the GOP is too flat -out ugly and obviously just playing "screw the fact, results, court decisions" and saying 'Stop Al cause we hate him" it may spring one or two or three moderates loose - Collins, Snow, Lugar, ... or some other surprise ... there is a possibility that one or two will have some moral fiber and decide to do the right thing

Yeah, it might be September or later before he can take his seat. The Republicans are terrified of that 60-seat majority.
