Serj Tankian is the lead vocalist of System of a Down, one of rock’s most uncompromising and outspoken bands. Born in Lebanon, Serj and his band members - Daron Malakian, Shavo Odadjian and John Dolmayan – are of Armenian descent and have made awareness of the Armenian genocide, and genocide around the world, a central message of the band. He is also the creator and founding partner, along Tom Morello of Audioslave (formally guitarist of Rage Against The Machine), of Axis of Justice, an activist organization aimed at motivating youth interest in politics and into Genocide recognition.

On November 22, 2005, six months after System of a Down’s Mezmerize debuted at number one on Billboard’s Top 200 Albums chart, the band returns with Hypnotize, part two of a promised two-album set. The Los Angeles Times credits Mezmerize for “restoring some artistic credibility and political attitude to hard rock” and touts the two-album set as “what figures to be the rock double play of the year” in their Fall music preview.

Serj also runs his own record label, Serjical Strike, in an effort to release music otherwise ignored by the mainstream and has released a poetry book, Cool Gardens, published by MTV Books.
