<p>Providing housing for chronic alcoholics, who are still drinking, can save taxpayers more than $40,000 annually, per alcoholic, according to the study released yesterday in <em>The Journal of the American Medical Association.</em></p>

<p>Nearly $4 million was saved by taxpayers by housing chronic, homeless drunks in a Seattle housing program, versus letting them sleep on the streets -- which triggers costly health care and criminal justice services. </p>
