Back in 1989, The New York Daily News editorial board was divided over who to endorse in the Democratic primary for mayor, David Dinkins or Ed Koch. It was a fight so ferocious that it spilled out of the normally secretive board deliberations, into the newsroom and the outside world of city politics.
