Our forces invaded because Israel wanted us to topple Saddam. Two religious communities--one consisting of a combination of secular and ultra-Orthodox Jews and the other of misguided Christians fundamentalists--control U.S. Middle East policies. Both believe their messiahs will come only when present-day Israel is strong and united. Until our government is liberated from those lobbies, we face big trouble.
