I have been home from Iraq for 3 years, and I have long been separated from military service. At this point in time one would think that it's time to move on with life. But as much as I would like to I just can't detach myself from this ongoing and unjustifiable war. It eats away at me daily as the news floods the media outlets with the deaths of more American troops and innocent Iraqi people.
I search for the answers but I can't find them. All I'm left with is the results of this horrid catastrophe.
We invaded another country based on lies. We removed their leader and saw to it that he was executed. We forced a military occupation upon a country of 25 million people. We did so uninvited and imposed our ideologies at gunpoint on an entirely different culture. We destabilized an entire region of the world. And we were arrogant enough to sugarcoat it with the title of "Operation Iraqi Freedom."
Even worse -- we are now threatening another nation with war.
The only comfort I have is that I'm not alone. I know that there are millions of Americans like myself who just can no longer tolerate this unforgivable bloody mess that has gone on for entirely too long.
We hoped that in 2004 and 2006 we could take our rage to the polls and elect leaders who would put an end to this war. We received nothing from our elected officials but inaction with a slight twist of political rhetoric. A lot of tough talk without any follow through whatsoever.
This is unacceptable.
Now we must mobilize the masses to ensure that America is not fooled again. It's time to lead the leaders and bully the bullies. We must demonstrate our resolve to rise up and fight against this terrible injustice.
This war has become a problem for us all and it is now our responsibility to end it. We will not do so by sitting in our homes complaining or electing candidates who want to "play it safe" to ensure their political victories. The past two elections have proven that will surely fail. Our only option is to educate politicians of all political parties to the reality that they work for us. And if they won't produce real results we will throw them out of office like yesterday's garbage. They must know that we can see right through them. We must create a political atmosphere where this type of thinking is considered "mainstream" and not radical. That should be our focus in 2008. It is the only way we will succeed in taking our country back.
