What Would Jesus Say to the NRA?

Posted: 12/24/2012 3:43 pm

What does the birth of the baby Jesus 2,000 years ago have to offer the violent, troubled world we live in? Or what would Jesus say to the NRA?

I want to suggest: a lot. A whole lot.

Jesus entered the world from a posture of absolute vulnerability -- as an unarmed, innocent child during a time of tremendous violence. The Bible speaks of a terrible massacre as Jesus was born, an unspeakable act of violence as King Herod slaughters children throughout the land hoping to kill Jesus (which the church remembers annually as the massacre of the Holy Innocents).

Perhaps the original Christmas was marked more with agony and grief like that in Connecticut than with the glitz and glamour of the shopping malls and Christmas parades. For just as Mary and Joseph celebrated their newborn baby, there were plenty of other moms and dads in utter agony because their kids had just been killed.

From his birth in the manger as a homeless refugee until his brutal execution on the Roman cross, Jesus was very familiar with violence. Emmanuel means "God with us." Jesus' coming to earth is all about a God who leaves the comfort of heaven to join the suffering on earth. The fact that Christians throughout the world regularly identify with a victim of violence -- and a nonviolent, grace-filled, forgiving victim -- is perhaps one of the most fundamentally life-altering and world-changing assumptions of the Christian faith. Or it should be.

So what does that have to do with the NRA? Underneath the rhetoric of the gun-control debate this Christmas is a nagging question: Are more guns the solution to our gun problem?

Everything in Jesus' world, just as in ours, contends that we must use violence to protect the innocent from violence, which is the very thing Jesus came to help us un-learn through his nonviolent life and death on the cross. Surely, we think, if God were to come to earth, he should at least come with a bodyguard -- if not an entire entourage of armed soldiers and secret service folk. But Jesus comes unarmed. Surely, we think, if God were about to be killed he would bust out a can of butt-kicking wrath; but Jesus looks into the eyes of those about to kill him and says, "Father forgive them." The Bible goes so far to say that the wisdom of God makes no sense to the logic of this world, in fact it may even seem like "foolishness" (or at least utopian idealism).

When soldiers come to arrest and execute Jesus, one of his closest friends defensively picks up a sword to protect him. Jesus' response is stunning: He scolds his own disciple and heals the wounded persecutor. It was a tough and very counter-intuitive lesson: "The one who picks up the sword dies by the sword ... there is another way."

That lesson that Jesus taught his disciple is as relevant to us, and the NRA, as it was the early movement of Christians in the first century. Violence will not rid the world of violence. You do not use swords to get rid of swords or guns to get rid of guns. There is another way.

Many Christians have begun to speak of Jesus as an interruption to the "myth of redemptive violence," the assumption that we can use violence to get rid of violence or that we can destroy a life to save a life. The myth of redemptive violence has many ugly faces. It teaches us that we can kill those who kill to show that killing is wrong. It teaches us to live by the law of "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth" a law that Jesus firmly spun on its head, saying, "You've heard it said 'an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth ... but I tell you..." There is another way. Killing to show that killing is wrong is like trying to teach holiness by fornication. The cure is as bad as the disease.

At one point Jesus even weeps over the violent world he lived in, lamenting that "they did not know the things that would lead to peace." The fact that Jesus carried a cross rather than a sword has something relevant and redemptive to offer our violent-possessed world. After all, the Bible has a lot to say about loving enemies, and "Thou shalt not kill," but doesn't even mention the right to bear arms.

So let's imagine. What would Jesus say to our nation, where these are things are true:

  • 10,000 people die from gun-related homicides each year, that's one Sandy Hook massacre a day, every day
  • There are nearly 90 guns for every 100 people
  • There are more than 51,000 licensed gunshops (and 30,000 supermarkets)
  • Guns that can shoot 100 rounds a minute, and are only designed to kill, are still legal
  • Other than auto accidents, gun violence is the leading cause of death of young people (under 20)
  • $20,000 a second is spent on war

There is a reason we talk about "Peace on Earth" so much around Christmas. There is a reason why we talk about Jesus as the "Prince of Peace." He consistently taught that we can disarm violence without mirroring it, and that we can rid the world of evil without becoming the evil we abhor. So let us recommit ourselves to Peace this Christmas season and new year -- in honor of Jesus, and in honor of the holy innocents.

isn't it a contradiction to believe in HIM and own a gun for protection from another human?

Matthew 18:6 and Mark 9:42 and its "written in red" Jesus says it would be better that a millstone were hanged about his neck and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea. Anyone that offends little ones.....

Question Authority, All Governments Lie

Jesus was the First Radical and Original Outcast fighting the system in place. Jesus had utter contempt for the system, and it was that very system that tried, and executed him for his beliefs in the People and Not believing in the system. The above Journalist has squaring missed the mark in his analogy. For Jesus not only was supremely empathetic but Jesus also severely distrusted and Opposed the System that oppressed the people. The Journalist should read his Bible and understand the context f Jesus's life first before he tries to go preaching to us about violence and what Jesus would think about this tragedy. We all know that our Government is corrupt ad cares not for our safety or security, in that our Government leaders only care about getting re-elected first and foremost. Using this tragedy as a means of whipping up support from their constituents is disgustingly contemptible. Hold the Evil accountable and not punish society for our Governments failings. For those that want to be apart of this debate I only ask that You research your History, both Biblical and he Historical Founding Father's accounts for adding the 2nd amendment. I will trust and respect any opinion you come to if and only If you are truly Knowledgeable about what you speak of. Expecting the News Media to Inform you about anything related to History or the Bible is a total Joke.

I believe Jesus would try to inspire people to behave in a maner that would make weapons irrelevant. If everyone lived has he taught the number of unused weapons of any kind really wouldn't matter but the world hasn't arrived at that point wishing it so doesn't make it so. Jesus sought to inspire and change hearts and minds through lessons not legislation. I believe Jesus would try and reach the trouble souls of those who cause such harm and help them to find a better way to live.

Jesus: Geez, things sure haven't changed much, as far as human social thought is concerned, for the past couple of thousand years. It's like I was resurrected just yesterday. Oy vey!

I'm not a religious sort, but maybe that's what he'd say?

Great article. Christians quickly lose track of being Christ-like, when it doesn't suit their political ideas.
I have a bumper sticker on my truck that asks: Who Would Jesus Bomb? I get so much anger from so-called Christians over that one, I was run off the road and cussed out once by a guy with Bush/Cheney, NRA and a christian fish stuck to his back bumper. It's a simple question...

Every nation has the right to defend it's people, property and existence. Jesus when he returns is going to fight a war to wrest control of the earth away from the devil and the anti-Christ. In Revelations it says the blood will run as deep as a horse's bridal in some area's of the battlefield. I dont think you have a clear definition of what the Bible says or who Christ really is.

What would Jesus say about the violence to the unborn in our society?

Jesus said nothing about abortion. But his father ordered the Israelites to kill their enemies children, including the unborn on more than one occasion.

KENNESAW, Ga - Several Kennesaw officials attribute a drop in crime in the city over the past two decades to a law that requires residents to have a gun in the house.

In 1982, the Kennesaw City Council unanimously passed a law requiring heads of households to own at least one firearm with ammunition.

The ordinance states the gun law is needed to "protect the safety, security and general welfare of the city and its inhabitants."

Then-councilman J.O. Stephenson said after the ordinance was passed, everyone "went crazy."

"People all over the country said there would be shootings in the street and violence in homes," he said. "Of course, that wasn't the case."

In fact, according to Stephenson, it caused the crime rate in the city to plunge.

Kennesaw Historical Society president Robert Jones said following the law's passage, the crime rate dropped 89 percent in the city, compared to the modest 10 percent drop statewide.

Thank you for providing that completely irrelevant anecdotal "data." And Jesus would say "Turn the other cheek." not "Arm thyself."

No he would not. Turn the other cheek simply means not to return insult for insult or dont fight back when insulted. It has nothing to do with protecting your family. Jesus would never tell anyone not to protect your family from evil.

Actually you can, I love my neighbors and own lots of weapons. My neighbors also know how to do unto others as they would want to be done unto. If they tried to harm me or my family that is a different story.

I thought this might be some good reading but I can't get past the conjecuture: "...From his birth in the manger as a homeless refugee until his brutal execution;" Jesus was neither homeless or a refugee. His parente failed to book a room at the inn. By the time he was visited by the wise kings, (at about age 2) they were in a house.

What Would Jesus Say to the NRA ? Kill 'Em All. . . The NRA is the Christian Right ! Incidentally the christian right is neither . . .

If God allows evil to exist it means he is NOT all-knowing, all-just, and all-powerful.
If he does not know how to defeat evil he is not all-knowing.
If he is not strong enough to defeat evil he is not all-powerful.
If he has the knowledge and power to defeat evil and chooses not to do so. Then he is just a monster.

Wow, you're so unoriginal. Can you come up with your own thoughts or do you just repeat what atheists (and countless theologians) have been saying for hundreds of years as if you're the first to say it?

Consider the ignorance of the average fundamentalist. Then realize that by definition fully half of them must be even dumber than that.
The mind of the fundamentalist like the pupil of the eye: the more light you pour on it, the more it will contract.

Didn't Jesus point out to his friends as he was being arrested that those who live by the sword will die by the sword?

In the case of firearms owners, it's even true: they are several times more likely to be killed by gunfire than those without firearms.

Jesus spoke up addressing the issues whenever He was able. He was crucified because He was outnumbered, let's face it. So were His faithful followers. THAT'S what some are interpreting as being a "passive" peace. He had no choice under the circumstances with that time in hx. But He would not have allowed evil to continue to slither in this world had He had the ability to wipe it out. He hated evil. And when He had the chance He did physically react.......ie, money changers in the temple......tirade time.

it sounds like your heart is in the right place thats good, but i just wanted to share with you a couple of things;
Jesus was crucified and die on the cross because that was what he came to do. he had to die to pay for our sins. Jesus had all the power of God and could have destroyed the Romans but his purpose for coming was to die on the cross. Jesus raised the dead, healed the blind, stopped a storm just by speaking. don't take my word for it or anybody else's just get a bible and read it for yourself.

The older, wiser and more mature I've gotten with age and less daily distractions, MY translation of those words, "He died for our sins" is ......that He came to this place earth to TEACH us.  He died to SHOW us what WE humans DO to each other.....to literally SHOW us before our eyes.  His death was not some pagan sacrifice just dying, but to visibly demonstrate by vivid and torturous example by what was DONE to Him, the evil and horror we humans are capable of and MUST STOP.

Through Jesus the SON, GOD the Father healed and raised the dead.

I have a bible right here in one of my stacks of books here in this room.  That is, one of the ?? how many translations ??

one......was drawn back to this post by another response that just came into my mailbox all these weeks later. I still believe that Jesus came to show us the NEEDLESS evil humans do....BUT didn't want to leave you with the impression that I didn't believe in standing up to evil. Just noticed your avatar......;o) I'm a former Marine wife of many years ago. I DEFINITELY believe in standing up to evil and fighting back.

And there are many doctors in my family. God still heals through humans like Jesus. God works in MANY ways through humans if WE allow Him to.....yes ?

As a former Marine wife years ago, am I allowed to say Semper Fi to you ? Bless you onelamp.......
