Can Marriage and Pornography Get In Bed Together?

Posted: 07/18/2012 1:43 am

All people in this post are amalgams of people I know, so if you think this is about you ... it probably is.

My dear friend, henceforward known as Crystal, (a name I used once to great effect) called me the other night in a state of crisis. She'd forgotten something at home and returned sooner than expected to pick it up only to find her husband of 15 years, Frank (pronounced Franc) watching an adult film on his MacBook Air.

There was a breathless pause wherein she awaited my shock and dismay. But all I said was, "And ... ?"

This may be a sign of the apocalypse, but I wasn't shocked, dismayed, appalled, perturbed or even mystified. It just seemed pretty ordinary. I'm going to guess that most people -- I have no statistics to back this up so feel free to jump in -- but most human adults have at least upon one occasion viewed for the purpose of self- and/or couple gratification the Sopornos. Search your soul -- or just your computer history -- and tell me I'm wrong??

Pornography has always existed -- have you seen the Mayan hieroglyphs? The ancient texts of the Kama Sutra? Just head to your local museum of art where it won't surprise you to discover that Rome is the "birthplace of modern pornography" -- and of course all roads lead there.

I was watched like a hawk by my parents when puberty hit, and even so I was exposed to my first pornographic image as a seventh grader by my friend Annabeth Lingua (admittedly not her true identity).

Annabeth was bookish, with owl-lensed glasses. She wore her hair in a bowl cut, skirts to her knees and blouses buttoned up to the neck. She was a Good Girl. But her mother, Savannah, was a lusty divorcee who sunbathed topless in the backyard while we scandalized middle-school girls treaded water, pimply and flat-chested in the swimming pool nearby.

One day when Savannah traipsed out at 4 p.m., no doubt to meet one of her liaisons in an upscale Howard Johnson, Annabeth and I were left to our own devices. Before five minutes had passed, we were eyeballs deep in pornographic magazines found under the master bed.

I had only recently read (in my closet with a flashlight) a purloined copy of Judy Blume's "Forever," from which I discovered one could kiss and copulate simultaneously. Imagine my stupefaction that both could also be done while standing in pleather stilettos!

In 2012 we have either the good fortune or extremely bad luck of being able to access pornography in our homes on televisions, computers and even on our cell phones. Not that I've done that. I've just heard that you can do that.

I'm ambivalent about pornography. It bears an unsavory sheen. Also I worry I'll be smote from above should I use pornography for my private gratification. That perhaps I'll be cursed with a flesh-eating virus rendering me fingerless in recompense for my transgression.

But here is what I'll admit in print. Cable TV has single-handedly kept things frolicsome in my marital bed for 14 years. Fourteen years, people. Fourteen. Years. And Henry won't be able to pry his wrists from my lifeless, rigamortic grip until we hit the Golden Anniversary. We'll both be pushing 100, but it's going to happen.

Some of my favorite aphrodisiacs include True Blood, Spartacus, Hung (which sadly was canceled), Girls and Game of Thrones. Oh sure, sure, the story lines are compelling, the dialogue whip-smart, the worlds rarefied, but let's face it, these shows are all soft porn.

Soft or hard (yes, a pun), I think pornography can help keep a marriage fresh, vital, funny and ever-evolving if it's not used as a replacement for actual sex with your spouse.

And just as the Native Americans bless the animal that sacrificed their lives to provide them dinner, I too sometimes bless the performers who sacrificed their dignity to give me my ... FADE TO BLACK.

Do you dare leave your thoughts? You can use your Porn Star pseudonym. Mine is Buffington Shelby (street I grew up on, first pet).

It's always funny when women think they can analyze why men like porn.

I think it says something about the lack of open mindedness about sex in our country when an article about mixing porn and marriage has to be written.

This country is so uptight about sex that even in 2012, the idea of porn (there is approximately one porn site for every 5-10 "regular" sites) is still taboo, and we're not even the country that views the most of it (that'd be China but that's more than likely due their insanely large population). I don't understand how a married couple couldn't enjoy watching a little smut together (keyword being together).

I agree Andre. And, someone please correct me, if I'm wrong....pretty much every other country on the planet enjoys full nudity on broadcast tv (both sexes) and dialog isn't censored. And people are always calling the British uptight! I laugh at that! =)

Can't speak for every country but I know the majority of them are very open when it comes to nudity and sex, not just on TV but in general. Because they realize all of it is natural and aren't afraid of it like they are here in the states. Americans sometimes act like a bunch of know-it-all's but we could learn so much from other countries.

@ "Douglas Laing"

You're right Douglas.

We are an embarassment to the rest of the world when it comes to our own sexuality.

Unlike anywhere in Europe, for example, Americans are constantly bombarded on a daily basis by sexually regressed religio-politico-nut-cases.

And it actually runs deeper than that, but that'll be in another blog.

Porn works for my marriage. Things were getting stale 7 years into it. Porn gave it a boost to Marriage Lust 2.0. Now she even dresses like my fantasy girl. Can't keep my hands off her.

Of course erotica and porn can be a positive thing for couples. The recent surge of women enjoying the Fifty Shades books is evidence that women enjoy sexuality in the form of entertainment as well. Here is an article that goes into the differences of what women and men see in porn as well as when it is a positive influence and when it is not-

@ "lisalawless"

I'm from a generation when we distinguished "porn" from erotica, particularly esoteric or antique erotica. It's sad now that, despite commercially vapid pretenders to eroticism, younger generations are actually more sensually regressed than in my generation, if you can imagine.

I see very little mention of erotica here; all the religio-fundies have won their little battle ( for now ) and succeeded in winning over a complacent culture by lumping the term "porno" into anything visibly sexual.

Radicalized American "feminism" of the 70s also contributed heavily to the new Orwellian Newspeak for the contemporary language of sensuality.

Fanned & Favored.

I also always wondered why mainstream American feminism went the Puritan route--if formerly men could be bawdy and women could not, then equality means no sex for anyone, male or female--instead of fighting to broaden sex and visual sex (porn) to ensure women get their jollies, too. There is a small band of sex-positive feminists, but I feel they have been marginalized. I wish with all my heart for future generations (I'm too old to benefit from it) that somehow, they'll win.

This is nothing new to me, but being gay, with two guys involved, it seems rather like a given. I believe there is still a fair amount of shame connected to overtly sexual females in our culture, more so in some circles rather than others, but aggressive women (even cheating/cuckolding women) remain a big source of arousal for hetero males. That's a big contradiction: setting the rules then coaxing women to break them. For men, it's almost expected, and I have nothing to explain to my partner if it ever comes to light. And with a m/m couple, the sexual politics are much less complicated. If a m/f couple can get past any feelings of insecurity, shame or jealously that may stem from using pornography--and I believe it is a tool more than anything else--I think it can be an enriching activity.

I knew a couple that watched porn together and their relationship worked out well is my understanding.

Who writes these sort of articles anyway?? Porn stars? These people will do anything to get more people to buy their smut, kind of like lobbyists, both lay on their backs for money.

I guess I married a weird one, she prefers hardcore to softcore. Says the softcore stuff like Game of Thrones is degrading to women but has no compunction about us watching one get plowed together. But hey, I'm not complaining.

I've never watched porn or had any desire to. My sex life is A-okay. I crave it constantly. When he's not around I use a toy. No porn needed here but thanks for sharing.

(from 'Carrot AND Stick' Moynehand)
Ms. Bradley-Colleary offers a light-hearted romp through the use of pornography by couples who wish to 'spice things up' in the bedroom. Although she's not into hard-core stuff, the soft-core films and 'literature' apparently abound in her room - titillating both her and her husband and perking up the same old, same old. I agree, although the worst exploitive stuff does plenty of harm to the actors/actresses and their viewers (by objectifying women), the slightly sexy material seems less bothersome. But I digress: my woman would never agree to flirt around with this stuff. I think she doesn't like the comparison: women who are outwardly passionate and willing to try new things. Sigh.

Hi Ms.Buffington Shelby(like the name).that with the pics in your youth is exactly what happened to me.till this day i like the pictures(not only nudes though).for women to pose nude and do soft porn i think is not to big of a deal.the hard core side is obviously the one where "concerns" are maybe appropriate.
